Want to start ratting
the durham digger replied to .philmypower.'s topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Its a homemade monarch type, designed like a lobster pot, with the funnel and a counterweighted trap door. I made it a longer trap that you can buy, i found them fine for catching 2's and 3's but a bit on the small side, so stole the design and made one to suit my requirements, i find they a deadly trap! -
Want to start ratting
the durham digger replied to .philmypower.'s topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Bear in mind mate that rats fear anything new to them so it will be a week or more before your trap catches...... once the trap is sited dont move it, i find the best bait is a tray of brown bread soaked in linseed oil, they love the stuff and iv had as many as 11 at a time in a multi-catch trap. Enjoy!! -
traditional or technological???
the durham digger replied to KawValley's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The hunting act states that all terriers used for earth work must be fitted with a collar and dug to as quickly as possible! Using a box and collar is not only conveinient for the fast location of the terrier but it is also a practical tool for the welfare of terrier and prey -
In that situation mate id just net the hole end or hold his head still with the shovel.... i get what u mean though, just those of us that cant get a certificate are relying on lads with a gun and if for some reason nobody can make it that day the says that our dogs stay in the kennels. An interesting bit of info here for you mate- i spoke to clive rees yesterday and he told me that the cps have informed the police that they wont be prosecuting lads on permission that are netting foxes regaurdless of if they are breaching the hunting act.... so make sure u have a few nets with you!
-
Iv handled every single fox iv dug or netted so thats not a problem?? Its not difficult. They no worse than carrying a gun, and keep u out of the courts
-
Iv just spoke to clive rees regaurding this matter and he confirmed that as a method of dispatch its probarbly the most humane and the cps wouldnt want to waste time or money challenging it. He also informed me that the cps have informed the police they wont be prosecuting terriermen netting foxes on land they have permission..... so make sure you have your nets lads!!

Has anyone got any contact details for the rother valley and what area they cover.... im on the south/west yorkshire boundary with north yorkshire a 10 minute drive away

Im sure that like me a few of you lads have made some poor decissions in your lives and therfore dont expect to be granted a certificate for a weapon to use dispatching quarry. Due to a bit of a chequered past and numerous convictions relating to football violence in my younger and more stupid days the police knocked my application back several times. But when my mate did away with his shotguns it forced my hand into finding an alternative. Thank god for the internet... i found a company online selling selling humane captive bolt stunner, this particular stunner is for private emergency sl
-
You can get a captive bolt stunner on the internet at around 200quid... you dont require a slaughtermans llcence as it stippulates it can be used for emergency slaughter and dispatch of fox and mink. You do not require an fac or a sgc. And more importantly it keeps your terrierrwork legal.

Avoid anything that looks sick, weak or lacking zest.... unfortunatly there no gauruntees. Some just dont have it in them. I always pick a cocky, self assure, bold pup, i dont want something that is too sensative. Key is in socialising, give your pup as much life experience as possible. I always tease my pup with a brush, well before starting it on rat

Nets, torch, and i put a small axe in my bag as well for the thicker roots your spade cant handle... the reply about an experienced digging partener is spot on! But the best bit of kit is a couple of good pork pies!! I always have extra tools in the motor such as a bar, grafter, pick and long handled rabbiting spade.... oh yeah and and assuming u have it, your written permission.

ready to go.....
the durham digger replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Nah mate they were late summer... id been having some problems around my pheasant pens, so they had to go... at the time i had a young bitch to start and 1 was dug at about 10 inches and the other 5 foot so was a nice morning out, and the killing seemed to stop after that. A lot of my digging in co durham is rock or limestone so its hard going, believe me mate it doesnt take long til your down to a t-shirt- even in december and january!!
