what defines a working terrier?
the durham digger replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Fair enough u entitled to it. But like i say a true working terrier is an earth dog. A dog that goes to ground, finds and stays for hours until dug to is tested to the maximum both mentally and physically and it is disillusional to say that a rat dog or bushing dog is tested as fully and therfore its slightly unfair to categorise them all as working terriers. Fact of the matter is a proper terrierman wouldnt consider breeding from a ratting dog or bushing dog....... its earthdog to earthbitch. And thats my opinion -

Got a black dog pup and he is standing at 11 1/2 hes a bit smaller than i usually keep but theres a lot of pipes in my area so he will be a handy tool for bolting foxes from pipes. Hes small but has a big attitude. -

I knew this topic would be hottly debated and thats good, luckily for us the little fellas are versatile little chaps! My dogs love to be out shooting tree rats for instance, standing on hind legs til i knock them out the branches but i personally wouldnt give kennel space to a dog that isnt an earthdog. You have to take your hat off to a little mite of a dog that crawls down a dark, damp hole to be bitten on the nose often from a foe striking down from a ledge or from amongst the roots. Because i handle my foxes iv felt first hand how punishing charlies ivorys can be. Rat dogs are rat dog -
One of the farmers i take care of foxes for is having a bit of bother with rabbits so i went out and got a discovery, but she is a bit fussy. I was just wondering if anyone that uses a disco can tell me what works for them. Thanks!

Got quiet a bit dotted about now, northumberland, co durham, cumbria, north yorkshire and south yorkshire. Its mounting up now. Your right there mate, got to be careful who you take.... a mate of mine once took two lads to a spot so they could see a bitch work that he was selling, the week after we caught them digging there! They got slapped and sent on their way, but he learned a valuable lesson that day! -
Id like your opinions on what the title 'working terrier' means..... i know im going to take a bit of stick from those that dont agree with me, but im going to be controversial and stick my neck out: in my opinion a dog is not deserving of the title terrier if he or she is not commited to earthwork, ie going to ground and either bolting what is infront of it or staying until it is dug to. A dog that doesnt have the inciling to go to ground but instead chooses to bush, hunt rat or rabbit or whatever it chooses to persue it can certainly be decribed as working, but is it a terrier? As t

Too right mate... i went a bit off the beaten track and got lucky, i wonder how many of these wild little pockets of england are left, they nice to find... but its also suprise to get a yes when door knocking. -
I remembered a little spot in north yorkshire, beyond aysgarth, (im not going to be too specific) where i have always ment to knock on a few doors. To cut a long story short iv secured another 3 farms, the land looks steep and hard going but i cant wait to get started and have a good rake about. Looks a proper wild place

Hahaha learn to spell you illiterate c**t, hope your dogs work better than you spell, but i doubt it, not through all that cotton wool you wrap them in!! You f*****g mongaloid!!! -
I use bellman and flint and find it to be be bang on, i know that a few lads swear by the barryvox and bellman and flint rechargeable collars. But for me it has to be the bellman box and collars, fantastic peice of kit.

Agreed mate- rats are for pups! Anyway i must go... im heading to china to get my dogs jabbed! f**k knows how this pair would react with charlie hanging from there dogs lip. Iv moved plenty of muck in my work, dont wory bout that that. Id invite you out for a dig, but dont think there will be room in the motor for your first aid kit. f****n hypocondriacs! -
high hopes for black pup
the durham digger replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I will have to get a usb lead from the market. I cant see the point in rushing my pup on, there is plenty of time and i dont think this pup is quiet ready yet, pups mature differently -

My dogs welfare is paramount but like i say after the initial puppy jabs they are completely worthless, but if you prefere them fair enough. Makes me wonder- do you give your dogs a torch, high viz vest and and hard hat for eath work? Happy hunting!
