I think of reds as being more like mice whereas the greys are just tree rats. Tiercel, that one in your garden looks like one which visits the bird feeder in the cottage we stay in on holiday in Dartmoor. My four year old daughter calls him Fatty!

I can understand why people like goshawks so much but for me a sparrowhawk wins every time. Maybe it's for the same reason I prefer whippets to greyhounds and bantams to full sized chickens...because I'm only 5' 6"! One of the most memorable experiences of my life was watching a pair of them effortlessly weaving in and out of dense woodland in Cumbria...beautiful acrobats!

Thanks, that's very much appreciated. I'll give the other things a go first and see how I get on. That's the problem with IT...it does exactly what you tell it to but it's just that most of us aren't quite sure what we've asked it to do! As a teacher I think that's why kids are generally better than adults at It too; they have no worries about it going wrong because they can just stick their hand up and ask for help, whereas we worry about what MIGHT happen and are too embarrassed to ask for help.

I've always thought most conspiracy theories were a load of overactive imaginations with too much time to waste...until my neighbour mentioned the moon landings and pointed out that there's no wind on the moon and so the clip with the flag waving doesn't make sense...got me thinking!

Hi Flipper_Al, I'm in Waterlooville, just to the north of Portsmouth. I'm going to try the things recommended above but I've also realised that I saved a load of photos into Dropbox earlier this year. I was presuming it worked in a similar way to a cloud (not that I'm 100% sure I know how one of those works) but I'm now wondering if they're saved on here instead and therefore taking up lots of space. It was simply because I had an IT accident seven years ago and then again just over a year ago in which (on both occasion) I lost the first photos of both my kids. I decided to stick them all

Huge thanks for all the advice...even the warnings to keep off the porn (which I don't I hasten to add what with me being so happily married!). My wife's reminded me that the husband of one of her friends works in computers so she's going to ask him to have a look. NB I'm doing the speedtest that somebody recommended on a separate tab...it said ping is 38ms (whatever that means), download speed is 22.24 and I got bored waiting for the upload speed so I've written this instead...and I'm still waiting for it to connect! Huge thanks again everybody! Edited to add: when I finished

I'm having problems with the speed of my laptop and wanted to see if anybody on here had any advice before I do anything about it. My laptop is an HP Pavillion and my internet is via Virgin. I started noticing problems about a year ago, initially when sending emails. I found that the speed at which I was typing was too fast for the computer to keep up (and I'm not the fastest typist in the world) so that every time I looked up, half of what I'd written wasn't there. It's now reached the stage where every browsing session is a painful experience. Sometimes it takes ages to open a page (up t

Brilliant idea...in a kind of "I can't believe there isn't one already" way. When you consider that, although there are probably a greater number of lurchers with greyhound as oppossed to whippet blood, there are probably a greater number of hunting whippets than hunting greyhounds and yet we have a greyhound subsection...surely it makes sense to have one for whippets. Having said that...you could say the same for salukis, deerhounds etc...I'll get my coat!

I always know when they've moved back in to my local wood (for some reason they don't use it all year round) as there are suddenly a lot more pigeon kills in evidence with tell-tale hawk signs. Beautiful and great photos!

He can have it for free but he has to come and collect it himself. When I told him he got really excited and reminded me that we're going to see Wales vs Japan in November...until I pointed out it would have pupated by then. That was almost as funny as another recent comment by him, "I wish they sold leopard geckos in Poundland!"

My son's just asked, "Is that on sale: can I buy it?"

Thanks for the link. Mine currently have theraband gold but I much preferred the latex band set they came with and I see they do they on that site.

I've got one and rate it highly.

I'm hoping to get Noggin out a lot more this winter too. He seems to have overcome his multiple injuries in January but I'm worried it may have affected his stamina so I'm seeing how he gets on during this summer. Edited to add: that's one big benefit of kelpies and heelers...you can take them out in the middle of the day in summer.

Thanks for all the advice everybody...I'll let you know how it went!

She's got to be one of the most stunning and versatile bitches on here Jigsaw. If you do a search, there was a good, and very long, thread about heelers and kelpies and their lurcher offspring on here a couple of years ago. P.S. (for Jigsaw) I've finally finished my full time stint so I'll get that information I promised to you over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the extra tip.

Thanks: that was my preferred option. My wife's a "posh bird" so we've only ever stayed in cottages before (which is completely different to cottaging!) as I can't imagine her in a tent unless it says John Lewis on the side! When we take the dogs to stay in cottages we usually let them sleep in a garden room/conservatory/boot room and only used a crate with Noggin once when he was about eighteen months and still chewing.

I'm not sure if this is the correct section so feel free to move it if necessary. My family and I are going camping next weekend and were wondering what to do about the sleeping arrangements for the kelpies. We'll be borrowing some friends' large tent with a central communal area with separate pods. As we see it, the options are: a) Crates inside the central area which means they're contained but also means extra luggage. b ) Sleeping free in the central area which alleviates the extra luggage problem. c) Peg them out which stops them wandering (but so does a "down: stay!") but migh

Lets See Them Whippets, Coarsing, Racing, Working
Neal replied to brenner's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
As mentioned above many times...a great thread with (as far as I can remember) no bitching. I don't own a whippet and maybe never will but it's the one breed that tempts me away from owning purely kelpies. Also, as mentioned above, information on breeding would be good so we can compare and contrast. -
I've not watched the video so can't comment on that, but I personally don't use food rewards for training. As some of you know I'm a teacher in an infant school. When I started working in the foundation stage I had some HighScope training which is against giving out stickers and the like to kids and encouraging them to learn new skills because they want to. My kids' school uses a similar approach which they refer to as intrinsic motivation. I've heard from a third party that the head-teachers in the local secondary schools claim they can tell which kids come from that school as they tackle

Raw Fed Dogs Any Health And Performance Benefits?
Neal replied to reddog70's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've read that cooking the eggs is better for some reaon but I usually feed them raw (unless it's the left over bits from my kids "dippy eggs"). I'll either break them into the bowl or throw them to the dogs and they catch them with a "crack, crunch, gulp!" I once gave a whole egg to my old 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhound without thinking about what he'd do with it and the daft sod was so soft mouthed he was still carrying it around half an hour later! -
Favored Line Of Border Collies For Lurcher Crosses?
Neal replied to Dan McDonough's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'd argue that the best cattle dogs (as oppossed to Cattle Dogs) aren't the ones who shout "Get over there now!" but rather the ones who politely inform the cattle, "You don't want to do that; you want to go over there...trust me." I personally feel that herding and dog training and teaching have a lot in common...and we learn better when we're not scared. Just my humble opinion mind. -
Raw Fed Dogs Any Health And Performance Benefits?
Neal replied to reddog70's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've been feeding raw for nearly eighteen years. Rusty (the kelpie in my avatar) lasted over sixteen years on it so no complaints from me...or the dogs!
