  1. Not wanted to make your decision harder but before choosing give some thought to what lens you'll be using mostly. Neither the Canon or Nikon have inbody stabalization so you'll might have to buy a lens with it, which can cost a lot. Sony, Pentax and Samsung have stabalization built into the camera body which makes their lenses far cheaper. Of the two I'd go for the Nikon, and I say that as a Canon user. Nikon have a slight edge over Canon at the moment. But as others have said, pop down to your local camera shop and hold them, you might find the Canon grip a bit too small.
  2. superb photos, I never see frogs out of the water at the moment.
  3. Thanks Jaggsy, never heard of such courses before.
  4. Look at some of the cheap Panasonic compacts, can't go far wrong. The Hewlett Packard hairycatcat suggested is great value for money but doesn't have an optical zoom just digital.
  5. Have a mate who has tried a similar scope with his camera with poor results. He ended up getting a 2X convertor and a decent zoom lens of ebay.
  6. Fantastic photos, got to agree about the robin especially.
  7. Even if you had a good camera, sod law says you wouldn't have had it with you that day. Must have been great to watch. As for a camera, it depends what you call 'low budget', it's often the lens that is more expensive than the DSLR camera. Or you could look at an all in one camera such as the new Pentax X70 Superzoom, but all the main camera makers will one similar. As for videos, I find YouTube good for them.
  8. Excellent photos. Haven't heard or seen any in my pond this year either, might have get the pump going to wake them up. :-)
  9. well as a newbie, thanks Rolfe, very useful post.
  10. some cracking pics labsnlurchers. red kite being my favourite as they are so hard to photograph IMO.
  11. If your monitor has a DVI input it might not need calibrating. Mine doesn't so I use Adobe Gamma. Pics still look awful of mates monitors though.
  12. Final owl pic is my favourite but all r cracking.
  13. Was it the Sony Alpha A200? Good camera, probably not as good as the Nikon and Canon but at least it has image stabilisation. But as Mike says you'll need a decent lens, from what you say a zoom in the range of 200mm or 300mm. Realistically you are looking at £500 but look at the pics by DawnB and others, worth every penny.
  14. Excellent photos swanseajack and Irish Lurcher. I was trying to take some photos of a kestrel the other week and just as it was getting close some woman shouting 'what are you taking photos of?'. Needless to say the bird buggered of. :-(
  15. Joined here originally to learn how to best set a larsen trap, don't recall anyone mentioning anything like this though. I'm sure someone far better qualified people than myself will give you a better answer.
  16. cracking photos, especially like the first one - really sharp!
  17. Thanks for all your replys, they re-arranged for Thursday when by all accounts it was even worse! Sadly had to work that day.
  18. Was meant to be beating this Saturday but got a call from the gamekeeper saying it was cancelled because it was windy? This is my first season helping out so didn't want to come across as dumb, but is it common to cancel shoots when it is windy? Didn't seem to bad to me.
  19. True the 40D has as faster frame per second capabilities, unfortunately many Canon lenses, including some L lenses, can only produce 3 frames a second at tops. Not seen any samples of 450D yet to see how its IQ compares with the 40D. The 400D and 30D were very similar despite the latter having better inbuilt processing; Canon's always produce good cameras. However, the Nikon D300 and Sony A700 are the best cameras on the market (excluding the mega expensive) and the Pentex K20D will be the best value for money camera on the market shortly. All of which is good for us users.
  20. Looks like it's going to get plenty of use, good pics.
  21. Not sure why they've done it, but Canon's new basic DSLR the 450D has better specs than their more expensive 40D. That said the new Pentax K20D looks better than both. Time will tell.
