Any more current pics from the gsd/alsation x?
-
My dog can be loud ons scent when bushing which make's it easier to locate him. He covers quite a lot of ground on his own so it is nice to know where he is. This does not seem to produce less bunnies. He's extremely silent and concentrated when I lay up the nets and put the ferret in. At this point your dog should be absolutely silent imho. I have noticed with the dog from a ferreting buddy, that having a dog barking all over the place will cause more digging to happen and less bunnies to bolt. Apart from less rabbits bolting, more digging it will also draw more attention than you'd like.

What kind of breeding are the two on the right? (the dogs) gsd x greyhounds , brindle bitch line bred gsdxgrey, other 1x gsd x grey Very nice dogs! Any more pics of those dogs? I like the idea of a GSD/ Malinois or Dutchy based dog a lot.

When you say "first cross/half cross" I take it you mean Bull Cross ? Cheers. No I was thinking about a GSD, Collie, Dutch Shepherd (on of them, not all) based cross with a grew. Or maybe a cross between my brittany and a whippet. To get something with just that extra gear but doesn't look like a lurcher.

Thanks for you input! In several threads I saw members mention that with first cross/half cross you have a higher rate of wastage. (This might be obvious to you but however since I'm a lurcher newb) why is this so? Because some of them are not leggy enough?

Dan what sire and dam will you be using? Are you over in the UK? Might be interested as well.

So you do think you should keep looks in mind as well, not just trying to find the best working animal? Are there any measurements or ratios you keep in mind? Length of the leg or parts of it, back or certain parts?

Hi Guys, When breeding a litter of your own, when and how do you decide which you keep? At what age? Which rules do you apply etc etc? Cheers

How much does the average patt weigh? 6-8kg? x $35k per kg means it's worth $200-300k;) Just kidding. You can't put a price on a truly good dog with a nice character once you've got one. Over here a pup from working parents dog can be had for as little as €150-300 for terriers or non pedigree working dogs, teckel/dachshund can get up to €750 a pup. Brittany/small münsterlander and other multi purpose continental spaniels from €350-800. German Drahthar and other multi purpose breeds about the same. Several breeds are very much hiped, which does reflect in the price. If you buy a dog which

what defines a working terrier?
Bossie replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I've always like the second explanation for the name terrier a lot more compared to the terra=ground so it must work below ground. But although this is acknowledged by public opinion some say and this is also possible that terrier could come from the latin word for terror. Every working(and even show/pet) terrier (working above or below) shares this trait, which makes it a more common trait than the earth work. All little terrorists if you ask me. To me a working terrier is brave, tenacious and persistent while working below or above. -
Hahah, actually I have multiple times (thought about leaving). The misses though..... my achilles heel. It does come with benefits like descent health care, pension etc etc. But to be ownest those benefits come at quite a cost, which I'm still willing to pay, at the moment. I'm very happy to live in a tri-border area, when legislation prohibits me to do something over here I still have two options left within a 10mile radius. In case of sight hound hunting, that's banned almost everywhere in continental Europe. Pitty it's so difficult to make the crossing with my own dog. I'd love to hunt w

No, you read that just fine. I can't do that. I'd very much like to though. If I'd do that I'd be asking for trouble even if I'm not using the dog as a sighthound/lurcher is supposed to (catching the bunnies), but just for marking. Having a few bunnies in one hand and a whippet/gh in the other can get you into serious trouble. If my neighbours fat lab catches a rabbit, no problem. Which is the main reason why the only one owning a sighthound over here is either a poacher or a hippie of some sort, so very little working sighthounds over here. That's why something fast but not looking like a

Would be a cross I'd like. They (the jagd) differ a lot in size, I've seen some up to 17-18" which is a lot bigger than the average border some are comparing them to. The Jagd is by no means an all out digging dog like several Brittish terriers. For me it would be easier to get a good pup from Jagd working lines than from Brittish Terrier working lines. There are some people over here using patterdale/russell to dig to but only a few and like I've said you can find quite big Jagds which would be a better choice imho to use as dam/sire in this cross compared to a smaller border/russell. 1st x/ half x whirrier experience and pics wanted
Bossie replied to Bossie's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If it looks like the average beddy whippet it would be a no go. If it would look like a leggy terrier, spaniel it would probably be ok. But you are right, a longer coat could be better, less lurcher like. -

Bossie replied to Bossie's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Is she 1/2 brittany 1/4 whippet 1/4 greyhound? Pretty dog! Does her coat stay like it is in the picture? Maybe I chose the title wrong, maybe it should have been something along the lines of: under cover lurcher or spaniel whippet cross. Would any of the mods be willing to chance this? -

no input? -
Would anybody be willing to share some first x/ half x whirrier or whippet spaniel cross pictures? Where this is coming from: Since I live in continental Europe where all true long dogs/sight hound hunting is prohibited a true lurcher/sight hound is not for me. I've asked some insight before in which ferreting dog to get, several mentioned to get a small lurcher. I've been using my 17" tts Brittany dog this season, he's coming along very well. Particularly well since he's 7 and I got him from a shelter when he was 6. Outside he's very game (imho), quite fast, has good feet and

Nice to see the dog is performing. Is he still a full male? Aren't their any sisters? 17"tts, that's a nice size for over here. With something like this I could even tell the police/antis it's a smoushond (dutch schnauzer) I'm hunting. He looks a lot like one of those.

If the poo is drie and crumbly you should feed them a bit less bone or some more meat/ change the meat/bone ratio. The poo should be firm, not dry, not wet. When feeding raw the dog usually also has to poo a lot less, when I feed kibble it looks just as if everthing that goes in the dog comes out, compared to raw where only very little comes out. I have noticed in my dog that when only feeding raw flesh (mainly chicken) he will develop a sodium defecit (is that right? i mean lack of). If I supply him a pinch of salt every to or three days I don't notice this. Lack of salt can become visible

I've got one jill which is 50% polecat ferret and 50% polecat (wild). She is much much stronger compared to my other two sandy jills. The polecat is 10 weeks old and is already stronger than the 1.5year jill. She's also more agressive and not very well behaved compared to the other two jills which are both healthy jills from working stock. She is the typical polecat X, physical and mental. Just as with other ferrets they also come in all shapes and sizes, her sister which is used by a ferreter nearby is quite a bit bigger, also a lot kinder. My x is probably not very useful for ferreting thi

Like the dog! Mini lurcher, would also be a nice mix for some continental ferreting (sighthounds/lurchers etc are banned as a hunting method) because of its looks.

Spear & Jackson rabbitingspade. Who's got it and do you like it?
Bossie replied to blaireaut's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I use a foldable spade from the army. Cheap and strong, downside is that it is not very big. -
Very nice pics. What's in the small white and grey X?(bull x whippet?)

Like her a lot. Would be something I'd like to use in the future.
