Good luck with the pup if you choose too keep it, but i dont think any dog with inherited genetic issues such as deafness, if this is proven, should be considered for breeding, even if it turns out a very good worker. Good luck with the pup and pretty sure it could be trained up, but you need to accept it will should never imo be considered for stud whatever its development, when there are always other good dogs around without genetic issues. all the best with the pup Matt.

My Dad and Grandad have both, rightly or wrongly worked their racing greyhounds some of which were grade one track dogs. The last bitch was to my knowledge (i was pretty young) very good in the field and never had any particularly injuries of note and raced until 6 and working well beyoond this. The previous dog was again good in the field and was studded out to produce some very good lurcher, but did lose a few toes in the process, didnt really slow him down mind you. All that said, i think they would both admit a lurcher (they prefer the greyhound deerhound types) is a more sensible option f

I think its absolute rubbish and i cant see the relevant or wisdom of putting it on here, cheers.

if you get in touch with most local shots, they tend to bulk order for the gundogs and i buy a 15kg bag of good quality dry food for £12 for my two, plus local butcher gives me scarps for £1.00 a bag. Wasting your money paying pet shop prices in my opinion.

I have known lads that run with collars and never had problems as well, sadly having had running dogs in my family and friends for generations i also know of more than one case where a dog has meet its maker whilst or been injured as a result of being collared up, but admittedly its a rare occurance and ultimately the owners decision/ circumstances. I think this particular collar , although may look good, as mentioned does have a big D ring and i just felt i had to mention the risks, happy hunting cheers.

Lovely dog in great nick and great pictures thanks for sharing them, just be careful running a dog with a collar on, it might seem picky but accidents can and have happened, collar gets caught on something, dogs neck is broken and its good night cheers.

Not sure if its the same, but the bouvier has a similar sounding double coat, which is harsh and slightly curled outer coat with a really tight short waterprorof undercoat, hope this helps.

Tail docking ,what is the correct length
matt1979 replied to brown trout's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
My old man always measured the pups back to the base of the tail and 1/2 this measurement for the tail length after docking for his russells. This would mean each pups docking was proportioned to its body and it leaves a good size tail after the dock. Cheers. -
I agree that some vets are using insuance co to make money and i suspect one of my dogs had an unneccessary op a few years back for this reason. But obviously proving it is pretty much impossible, i have learnt my lesson and travel the extra disance to a vet i trust nowadays. I personally also feel alot of the medkcations handed out are not required and can be a money making scan from some vets. The general cost of vets bills today means you pretty much have to go with insurance though despite the rising costs, its the shame with car insurance people are taking the pee claiming for whiplash al

lurcher and terrier kennelled together
matt1979 replied to NATACC's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i and my family have had working terriers and lurchers (mainly greyhound type) for my entire life and other than one fight over a ball.I can not remember any other incident of genuine agression between dogs, the majority of these workers were entire and generally bitches. Please do not reply with daft comments about having pet dogs, as this hasnt been the case. No doubt there may well have been a few issues in the kennels at times but they were never observed and couldnt have been major .e. no injuries occured. My dogs now live in the house, admittedly only two and i can honestly say they have -
dog is mental on the reds but lets out something shocking
matt1979 replied to flipper82's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
over-excitement simple as that, at least you know he is enjoying it. -
Mini schnauzer, used for marking holes with the ferrets, bushing, general mooching, chasing rabbits (without success), retrieving (mainly a tennis ball, but the odd pheasant, dead calves head, woody, sqiurrel and one pike and one perch from the local fishing pool) oh and warming the feet, an allround worker.

are border terriers any good for bushing
matt1979 replied to dan john's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
My brother works to border bitches for bushing to his shotgun and they are excellent little terriers, where easily trained to a good standard, not yappy or scrappy and have good coats for the work, as a bonus they are soft as a brush in the house. -
Tough situation and i would always agree the kid must come first, as already said, sounds like the dog is considering itself above your wife in the hierarchy and did what comes naturally to tell your wife off. This is not a criticism, but especially when dogs live indoors, i think they can easily get above the station and get confused as to where they sit in the hierarchy, i have seen it first hand. I am quiet sure someone could bring this dog around, but i dont think that home should be a family environment personally and hopefully if you get another dog in the future maybe be sure the all fa

Second the bakers comment above, its crap food and full of additives, colourings etc and i dont think this will help the problem. Get the pup on a better quality dry food without the shite added and a higher protein content, especially at that age. I always feed 4 x a day at that age as well, cheers.

Racing greyhounds nowadays tend to be trained by full time trainers for many reasons, probably mainly as most of the tracks have disappeared and the lincensing of trainers is now very strict. Where as a few years back, greyhound tracks where all over the place (flapping) and the many of the dogs raced on these tracks where worked as well, or at least the ones i knew where when i was a kid. As already said my dad and grandad have had racing greyhounds for years and they raised them no differently than there lurchers, other than perhaps doing more road work and giving the track dogs specific res

Thanks for the responses fellas, i look forward to any future CMW articles about those pups. Chart, i think its probably a while back since any hound blood made it into the bouvier as most can be traced back to a handful of dogs left after the war, as you probably know they were messenger dogs so were pretty much wiped out, but having grown up with sighthounds and now had a Bouvier for 6 years there are definate similarities in temperament (chilled out indoors, happy to sleep alot and chase anything that moves as a pup lol) but there are obvious differences as well. Any more info fellas keep i

Thanks for the responses, my only real concern with kits is realistically, i work 9 to 5 and will probably be able to handle then for an hour or so daily more at weekends and i have always boxed them up and walked taken them on walks with the dogs usually a couple of hours a day and again more at weekends in the past, with this ammount of contact are they likely to tame up ok? if handled correctly obviously. I should add they would be living in a large court within a shed, so have plenty of exercise opportunity i.e. piping etc.

Just after advice regards getting a couple if ferrets, they will be worked, but i am in no hurry to start working them a my permission is not currently ferreted and owned by family. The question is should a rehome/ buy a couple of adult ferrets or wait for this years kits and start from scratch with them. I havent raised kits before, but have kept adult ferrets before in my youth. My concern is if a get adults and they dont take to working then i dont want to end up getting more which will work, but guess this is a risk with kits as well, but would hope the risk is limited if taken from workin

My grandad and dad have both raced and breed greyhounds and they worked them all at the same time, not neccesarily the right thing to do to get the best out of them on the track, but they obviously enjoyed it and they must have been fairly good in the field, as they were regularly studing the dogs to various lurchers of my dads friends ( and not just to add pace). That said the greyhounds usually ended up losing a few toes from field work, which didnt help the track speed much.

I beleive a gamekeeper in Scotland breed a Greyhound x Bouvier litter last year and they were advertised in CMW, but he was honest about what they were lol i think he used his bouvier for tracking deer etc if i remember write, he has written a few articles about his bitch, but sadly never about the pups.
-
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of a bouvier type lurcher, as i know there are a few out there albeit very few. I have owned a bouvier for 6 years and she is a great dog, was wondering how they would turn out with a greyhound or similar x in the mix. An honest assessment of the bouvier would be, benefits, good chase instinct, solid and athletic, very trainable, good nose, good feet and very sound temperament. On the negative side, i would say lacks speed (obviously), strong guarding instinct (which may be a positive but isnt really a requirement for a lurcher), square shape (short

wanted some one with ferrets to work with our dogs!!!!!
matt1979 replied to stokefan's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I would be happy to come out with my ferrets but it is unlikely to be until next season, as moving house back to cheshire etc. I have permission in Wem which isnt too far from where your based i beleive, hope this helps a little, cheers. -
I am going to give 2.8 guy victory on the grounds of his attention to detail and i will honour my reward of drawing it up in due course (will put a picture up when done, which probably wont be anytime before half term) cheers for all the replies.
