I have had to crop them to get them to size. Not really sure how to use photo bucket to be honest. I'd you click on the pics it should enlarge at least it does on my phone cheers.

Took the pup out for a couple of hours yesterday morning before the heat, she has settled in well and is generally very sensible for a pup at 4 months old. She will be used mainly for bushing and ratting and is happy to enter any cover with my other dogs, although at this stage she is just following the other dogs rather then her nose. Just hoping her coat will harden up a bit as it is still pretty soft at the moment. She has been a pleasure to own so far and has learn't the basics pretty easily, no problems with recall to date, but that may all change when the hormones kick in, we shall see.

Just an update on the SLT pup, she is about 4 months now and settled in a treat. She is bold as you like and is following the other dogs into cover well. Hopefully her coat I'll harden up a bit as it is still very soft, other than that couldn't have wished more off her at this early stage atb

Fair points Dixie, I am hoping stripping the coat regularly will harden it up a bit and reduce the problem with gathering to much crap when out and about. Time will tell i suppose. Cheers.

Drabo I dont currently have any ferrets so I am unlikely to be using her for this, just general mooching with the lurchers and other dogs really. Samba yes Plummer had alot to do with the breed in the early days i believe and there is a variety of different terrier blood in the ancestry, what true and whats not I arent sure of but the ones i have seen do a decent job for what I am after cheers.

Fingers crossed she turns out well, she certainly doesnt lack character at this age and is into everything. cheers for the comments.

They are charging daft money sadly in some quarters I paid what I deem a fair price for a well raised pup, but it seems common for them to be going for around 450-500 which for what is essentially is a crossbreed terrier is a bit daft really. Cheers.

My family ribbed me a fair bit when I got the pet schnauzer for the mrs but at the time I was in the raf and away for long periods hence getting a pet dog. It has always been walked alongside terriers and lurchers so it basically works as a little busher and genuinely it will find a lot of game and will go allday. It is obviously no world beater but is very keen and believe it or not has been to ground on a few ocassions thankfully it has a chest like arnie so it doesn't get far. Atb matt.

Yes Wirral it is always a risk with terriers that they enter but i certainly wont be encouraging it as it isnt really what i have got her for, time will tell i suppose. Both parents weren't earth dogs but both worked with the gun and alongside lurchers bushing and have done so for several seasons so hopefully i have minimised the risk. I realise some will criticise terriers that dont do earth work but it just isnt my thing and i am not into spaniels and other types, as terriers are what i grew up with and know best. All the best with your pups Wirral sure they are keeping you busy now.

Picked my my new addition on saturday and she has settled in very well, although she is currently tormenting the older dogs. Roll on the 2nd vaccination so we can get her out in the woods to burn energy. She seems a pretty laid back bitch and certainly very forward and confident. She wont be used for earthwork but hopefully prove a useful addition out bushing and possibly working with the gun. Cheers.

Picked up my Sporting Lucas Terrier pup on saturday, 9 weeks old at present and is hopefully the first part of my future bushing pack. Seems to have settled in well and is tormenting my other dogs, roll on 1 weeks time when she can be out and about. Will post some pics as she develops and hopefully does some work further down the line. Cheers Matt.

Pups Born This Morning

Good luck with the pups WM, how is the lurcher pup coming on? atb Matt -
In response to the question, obviously give the dogs as much room as you have available, but that said a well exercised terrier or any dog will sleep the vast majority of the day, so the run is less of an issue if the dog is well exercised. Always interesting to read comments about kenneling terriers together, as obviously people have had issues and bad experiences, but i don't think it is fair to say that all terriers cant be kenneled together and that's it. Yes there is always a risk but i guess it is about knowing your dogs. My family have keep terriers of all types for to my knowledge

For what its worth, I think you have probably just had a bad run of luck with the dogs. But perhaps if the injuries you mentioned are all long bone (specifcally fibula) then this could suggest a bit of over use I.e too much exercise has played a part. As you probably know long bones contain growth plates that don't mature until adulthood and in a tall running type dog they have a lot more growing to do than most breeds. They are also placed under more tension and pressure with the higer speeds. Until the bone matures from more cartilaginous make up (softer more plyable) there is always an incr

I Am Definately Getting Soft In My Old Age .....
matt1979 replied to socks's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Paulus I wasn't suggesting anyones dogs are shivering away in kennells my family which have kept tunning dogs for generations have never kept them under heat lamps and the dogs were happy enough. The point I was trying to make was that if a dog is cold and curls ups constantly for warmth they MAY be a knock on effect of muscles being shortened over time which COULD increase the risk of muscular or skeletal injuries. I currently have 2 dogs neither runners one is getting on and come the colder weather she takes a good 10mins to loosen up after sleeping curled up, does this back a theory up no b -
I Am Definately Getting Soft In My Old Age .....
matt1979 replied to socks's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
At the end of the day, those who use a heat lamp seem to see the benefit, those who dont, dont seem to have any major problems so each to their own. Regarding curling up, the point i was getting at was any position with a dog, human whatever creature is held for prolonged periods will lead to some stiffness and potentially reduction in flexbility. When a dog curls up the spine is indeed gently stretched (laterally in one direction) as someone stated but the point being the muscles of the spine during this time at shortened on one side (not tensed unless the dog is very cold and the muscles wil -
I Am Definately Getting Soft In My Old Age .....
matt1979 replied to socks's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Pretty sure there have got to be benefits to heat lamps on cold nights, as has been said dogs can cope with the cold and will curl up for warmth. But if they are constantly curled up over prolonged periods then you cant tell me they wont be stiff and potentially be more prone to injury than if they were warmer and stretched out. Its pretty basic physiology if muscles are tightened/ shortened for prolonged periods i.e. over night when curled up then they are more likely to reduce flexibility in the dog, which could lead to more muscular injuries. Running dogs generally carry much less fat/insul -
Not surprised WM look lovely dogs, enjoy the pup and fingers crossed my old man (Trev) gets a pup off you cheers.

WM thanks for the offer will try and tag along if Col pops over to you, although i dont see alot of him these days, my old man does keeps in touch though. Always liked the look of your Plummers and enjoyed your pics keep it up. Would have liked to have had a pup of Cols litter myself if I had the room, he sorted my mate out a few years back with a lovely little black lurcher and he wasnt disappointed, my old man had the same line as Cols going back when i was a kid and they were all good dogs and pets for that matter. Good look with little Sid, sure he will do well for you if he is from Cols s

WM keep the pics of the lurcher pup coming over the months be nice to follow that lovely little pups progress, as its off my uncles stuff by what you say cheers.

I dont know a great deal about other breeds, but i have a Bouiver bitch here that is an excellent and natural guard, very agile and also a sensible bitch with plenty of brains and easy to live with, great coat for the outdoors. Always surprised they arent more popular in this country as they can make an excellent house dog and guards if trained up well as a pup, very popular as police dogs on the continent. Attached a couple of videos for those not fimilar with the breed some daft stuff on them but gives you an idea of the breed cheers.

Good luck finding the dog a home, sure itwould do a job in the right situation. Sadly I suspect, very few people can probably offer it the right home so be choosey.sure the nipping could be trained out with firm boundaries and plenty of exercise, but in no way should behaviour like this be accepted especially in adult dogs. Atb with rehoming atb.
