  4. It is the last day of my Easter break,so,off out I went to a farm a few miles away as he had said there was a few Bucks about.I got there about 1500hrs,and made my way to the area that usually holds any deer that are around, but,as they say....'The best laid plans of mice and men go awry' and that is exactly what happened,no deer to be seen at all,so i dropped down over the opposite side of the valley for a peak.Last year i had seen a huge Buck with three does around this time, and, was hoping to get a chance of a shot this time, but, even though with the sun up I felt very confident of there being

  7. I had a call from a sheep farmer local to me saying that he had had 2 hens and 14 chicks killed, plus he is lambing, and, could I have a look out.Well,I did have a look round that night, but, nothing to report,so,as I was out on the opposite side of the valley today after a Muntjac,it was my delight(and I know some people may have objections, but, this is purely pest control)that as I laid down watching a sunny bank that often produces I watched a fox ambling down the other side of a sparce tree line,so,as it poked it's head out at the end of the run a 100grainer was duly launched, and,Charlie flopped

  11. Today was the first decent day we have had for what seems like months,so,I jumped into the truck with the rifle and was off to a place that usually holds a few Bucks.I was after a Buck that was cleaned off or a young follower, but, when I got there the owner told me that there had been three large Lurcher type dogs running in a pack,he had even seen them ragging a dead lamb(not sure whether they killed it or not),but,if they did it was killed on another farm as he doesn't have any stock at all,he has three plantations though, and,I was still hopeful of at least seeing Deer.I was sadly disillusion
  12. You don't need any qualifications as such, but, they are sure to ask what sort of experience you have shooting deer,so,some sort of letter from your keeper friend saying how many you have shot, and that you are safe, and, that you have permission to shoot deer on land that is suitable(which could just be a bought day)would help immensely.Just don't take no for an answer,if they do say no,ask them to put their reasons in writing to you and take it up with the Scottish Association for Country Sports, and,if not already then subscribe to them, they will soon sort it out for you.Good luck...........Marti
  13. I've not heard of that, what other symptoms are there? Hi Fidge, when gralloched the intestines were very red with a yellow tinge to them, and, the peri cardium(the sac around the heart)was also red with a yellowy tinge and was watery looking, all of the lymph nodes were the same as was the peri renum (sac around the kidneys)and the Omentum majus(the Caul fat). The whole of the viscera looked like a bruise does if you open it up.If you shoot one with these symptoms then get rid of it,and,it is best to do so where it lays rather than take it somewhere else, and, don't play around with it to
  14. You do love the odd BBQ don't you Local mate, but, well done on the Buck,we(FD & me)were out this evening and never got a shot on a Buck....again! Did pull off a rather nifty shot though,I will tell you about it when I next see you..........Martin
  15. It could also be something a lot more sinister,I shot a Buck last year that was scouring very badly, and it turned out to have 'yersinosis'the carcase was duly buried over a metre deep.Have you shot one of the beasts and checked it out internally? Martin

  21. I was asked by a mate that doesn't usually shoot foxes to help a farmer out that had some very brazened foxes in his lambing field that would just sit down and watch him, even with the lamp on them. So,I turned up at about 1900hrs which was when he said they usually turned up,I had a very nice shooting spot right on his balcony and I was sat on a picnic seat with the bipod rested on the wall,so,I was truly being spoiled. We were even offered constant tea/coffee......certainly not what I am used to,but,it certainly made a nice change. The problem fox was however conspicuous by his absence,an hour p
