New job and new 25 metre indoor range to run for the TA
pianoman replied to zini's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Looks good Si. I think you'll be very happy here. I had a bit of a re-union recently with my old RAF Regt. Squadron pals and the guys now serving 60 RAF Regiment as Officers. They report a lot of new lads coming in are showing signs of actual fear of firearms. (Christ knows why they join up as gunners?!) Anyway, something like this you're running is going to prove valuable indeed. Seems there are not many youngsters joining to serve, have any real shooting experienc beyond pissing about with computer games and crap like that. Good show mate. Please keep us informed of how you get along. -
Actually... I was at Duxford airshow a couple of weeks ago. And I did see a long haired twat wearing an RAF No 1 Best Blue jacket with jeans and a T-shirt... And I gave him a look of death!

Nothing beats a well-sorted HW77 like mine in the hunting/target shooting field Fry old lad! That rifle is a German masterpiece. But the Pro Sport has all the accuracy you need for hunting wrapped in a beautiful design of its own. Spring rifle shooting to me is a bit like classic cars to some others. It's an old, established design concept, it's beautifully simple and it's been improved and polished up into some stunning examples. The HW77 is one example and the Pro Sport is another. Both worth owning and enjoying All the best mate. Simon

I would have a Pro Sport any time, any day. Air Arms never made it for us left handed riflemen until recently, that's why I have owned both the left handed TX200 .22 rifle and a .177 HC carbine for the last ten years or so. They are beautiful, superbly accurate and incredibly consistent rifles that hit what you aim them at. I wouldn't have my collection without them. But the Pro Sport has it in the looks department by a marathon mile. It is a stunningly beautiful rifle and it's as accurate as it's possble to get. Definately one on my list when I've got the cash to spare. Simon

Let us know how you progress with this high-performance HW97K Phil. Generally speaking the HW97 runs the same internals as the HW77 and they don't take well to FAC tuning. You might have the exceptional one that works! Craig's answer really sums up FAC .22 spring rifle shooting well. Shoot at normal, sensible ranges and use the extra grunt to put the pellet on the target harder and faster than conventional sub-12ft/lbs power.

You are welcome Chris. Great when you gel with a great rifle like this!
-
I don't know why but, there will always be a day when you and your kit just won't gel together. I had this conversation with an All England champion clay pidgeon shot. He says it's just one of those unexplainable things in shooting. It's happened to him with a competition shotgun worth tens of thousands. I've known times when one of my rifles, that was absolutely shooting clean and true only a day or two before, suddenly felt like a dead, lifeless weight at my shoulder, I just could not get comfortable with, the next day out. It happened to Andy last time we were out too, with his HW90; an

It was actually a very good rifle Mike. Made in the days when BSA were a fine British gunmaker.

Boots asks PCP or springer? and I replied springer and a straightforward reason why Sean. I didn't think it necessary to have to go repeating all the good advice he's been given already, old chum You didn't mention a pcp needs extra charging gear, which adds to what can be considerable costs for the rifle alone; and there's a finite number of shots it'll do before it runs out of puff. They are not, generally, as durable as spring rifles and don't like rough handling and dusty conditions; whereas, a spring rifle will take the wear and tear of rough handling in it's stride.. PCPs' wil

Spring rifle. Anyone can whack a 50-metre bullseye with a PCP, but the skill and knowledge behind shooting it lies in correct shooting technique. And only a springer will teach you that

Absolutely agree with Andy. Don't try to improve on what you've got her running at Chris or you'll lose what you now have. You should be walking the shots out over increasing ranges now mate. Try a zero at 35 metres pellet-on-pellet and see where the shot rises or falls at closer and further ranges to see what the trajectory is doing. It's sounding good so far! Simon

Thanks Mark and Chris. Cheers Simon

Thank you Tony mate! A great aircraft. I worked with a Buccaneer S2B bomber unit at RAF Laarbruch, Germany for a three-year tour, during my Regt. service. 16 Sqn. commisioned me to paint them on anti-shipping excercises in 1983 and I got to fly in the Navigator's back seat a few times! Amazing to experience that. I flew in a few Tornado GR1a too but, that felt as though it didn't have the physical grunt of the Bucc at low level. That was when we were truly a Royal Air Force to bloody reckon with! Simon

weihrauch hw97k or AA TX200
pianoman replied to jimmythewhippet's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
It's actually a hard one this; to advise on just the one rifle, as they are both seriously superb shooting rifles. I have both a Weihrauch HW77 (which the HW97 is really built on) and the TX200 Rifle. Both are .22 and both can split a stick or nail a rabbit at over 50 metres if you have the know-how. And both will allow you to develope your skills and beyond, no matter how proficient a marksman you become. These rifles will go on matching and complimenting your talents. And, my God are they consistant! 2 Ft per sec is all the variance they show on the Chronograph. There are PCPs that cann -
Oh yeah! If Carlsberg did avatars.............. Archie would be designing them! Cheers mate. Simon

MY GOODNESS I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS..... :icon_redface: :icon_redface: Thank you all, every one of you fine lads. I had a busy but productive day and a good dinner with my business partner and me dear old mum! Fry. Apart from working in music, I'm also a professional military aviation artist of a certain repute. Put "Simon Atack aviation art" into google and images and you'll see some examples of what I do in the daytime, when I'm not shooting or gigging. New website. www.simonatack.com Is to be launched in November and we are busy building stuff into it. And we are working a lo

Some footage from a shooting pal and moderator on the Rapid forum
pianoman replied to zini's topic in Airgun Hunting
Great shooting from Eddie there Si. He really knows his fieldcraft to back it up too. I love watching a chap who takes a pride in his shooting, put it all to work. Serious hunting kit those Rapids too! Actually it's not a bad bit of film from a quality perspective. But you know what you want All the best with the productions. Simon -
Now there you go young Dean. I work hard to get you shooting like a pro with you beautiful HW77 carbine.....A spring rifle of exquisite quality and accuracy, so beautiful to shoot with, it makes you . You nail a squirrel clean through the head with it.... ! You've earned your stripes as a spring rifle marksman.... :toast: AND THEN........ You just have to go and buy this contraption......Laddie! Ha! it looks lovely mate. Bring it over and let's have a shot with it sometime! Nice rifle Dean! All the best with it. Simon

Spring air rifle shooting.

Thanks very much Fenton and welcome to the section! Another class HW77 owner ! One of the very best air rifles there ever was Simon -
Nice one Nick. You tuck in and enjoy your dinner from your shoot. I know these are generally reared and raised for shooting and there's blokes paying good money for a day's gun in a shoot. But, in these austere times, a little free meat is not to be sneered at. Surely one or two shot with a clean pellet for the pot, is not going to cause offence. Simon

Great stuff Gary. For once I'm really impressed about how well this Rapid has performed despite the rough handling and abuses the gun has taken from some uncaring shooters. Even pcp's have feelings too. Why don't you put a bid in for her off your gaffer? She clearly performed superbly in your skilful care! I reckon you'd get some fantastic sport and memorable shooting, out of this rifle still to come! All the best pal. Simon.

anyone want a side splitting laugh???
pianoman replied to Marksman's topic in General Airgun Discussion
That was as quick as my thinking could come up with on the spot Tony. But I'll remember these you sent in! :boogy:It's bound to happen again on my permission. Plenty of silly buggers like her yomping around our valley like they own the thing!. Great to see you here again mate Simon -
One thing you can try is to accurately measure out the ranges; 5 to 50 metres say, in 5-metre increments with a tape and set your scope to focus as sharply as you can on each one and mark it on your scope focus ring. I use a fine brush of Humbrol enamel light grey and a masking taped, very fine strip-line, defined by two edges of masking tape, on the mark. Voila! Instant range finding and paralax setting! Simon
