    Rats

Has anyone used ferrets to chase rats from under sheds ect. Would a rat run from a ferret or would it stand and fight , if I was to do it it would b in winter so the rats shouldn't have any young. Dad sed a rat shud run unless it's cornered or has young... But he's only ever done ferreting coursing and lamping so he's not sure. We have a fairly bad rat problem so I was guna use the ferret to chase rat to the dog would this work? Cheers
  2. We just took ours up to the farm and let him have a gd sniff of eveything. But he did used to chase the chickens not to kill them but cause when a chicken is chased it makes alot of noise and drama so he thought it was good, to stop him I put him in the chicken pen and made him follow me past the chickens and everytime he went t chase one I made him sit and stay by my side. He don't bother no more. Atb
  3. I have a pure blue whippet dog 2 year old it's guna b his first full season this year. By the end of last season he was trotting alongside my bike on the road for about 45 mins and following me on the horse at a canter and the odd bursts of gallop over different terrian up and down hills ect. With rests on the way. Every day, unless he was going t be working that day/ night. He used t b worked 3 -5 days/ nights a week coursing lamping ferreting and ratting rabbits. He was plenty fit enough and had enough stamina to do what was asked of him, but wondered if I would need to do some speed work l
  4. Iv worked 2 whippets n ma dads always had 1 along with the lurchers. I have a blue dog at the moment. We use them for ferreting ratting lamping coursing rabbits and a few long ears (pre ban) il put the pick up later . I think it really depends on what you want to use it for
  5. Yeah they've taken 6 chickens and a bbe goat
  6. our whippet used to do a similar thing he wouldnt chase the rabbit until it bolted, no matter how close u got. so i left him a bit and did some coursing during the day,and a bit of work on the lure, he knew what to do in the daylight then when we went bak to the lamp he knew his job atb
  7. Cheers yeah we have something t kill the fox, and I have a few people to show me the ropes mr nat how very rude lol cheers
  8. Our dogs get an egg about 3 hours before they go working, just cracked into their bowl
  9. Cheers he's getting their especially if there's food at the other side iv found he jumps things better if it's solid like a plank off wood which goes right to the floor rather than something that looks flimsy thanks for the advice
  10. My dads mate used t keep a few staffys and he only fed them on green tripe with mince meat, and porridge on the cold winter mornings they looked really well shiny coat n well muscelled
  11. [bANNED TEXT] the dogs are at their fittest I take our dogs alongside the bike on a loose lead on roads at a trotting pace for about 45 mins every morning. Then on a night they follow me on the horse for miles cantering/ galloping over fifferent terrian up n down hills over fences, come across loads of bunnies on the route for about 1:30 hrs with a few rest/ walks for a while then they're in the garden most days playing atb

  15. Hi I was wondering what people preffered to use and what's better a fox snare or a cage trap? Iv set a snare and. We haven't got out yet :/ and we don't hav a dog big enough to take a fox?? Cheers
  16. look well how bigs the dam? Atb
  17. it depends on your horse, and if he/shes been broken before. iv broke 3 horses to drive they were all calm horses and took to it really well, one of them were broken to ride and the other two untouched, but because they were calm horses it was easy if i was you get soe one experienced to give you hand and set u off on the right tracks good luck
  18. haha i dont no why it does that ...strange and i posted it ages ago so i dont no why its gone to the back lol
  19. but if ur ferrets hungry wouldn't it kill in and stay?? This is probably going to offend you but if your ferrets need to be hungry to work well them they are not very good ferrets. Mine are not working for food, hence if they kill they just go looking for other rabbits and dont feed, they are working because thats what they love to do.
  20. but if it was the ferrets first time it wouldn't no there was nowt down there ... Unless it was a sh*t hot ferret lol not starting an argument it's my opinion lol
  21. I only do it with the first timers ! If it's the ferrets first time it has to learn to go down the hole. It's [bANNED TEXT] iv been taught to do and at 16 if it's [bANNED TEXT] most people u go ferreting with do n it works why not? Iv only ever had t do it twice and they've turned out to be pretty decent ferrets. My opinion is if you have to do that then they are not ready, i usually start mine about 7/8 months and they usually fly straight down. Don't really 'work' then until their second season, but just let them learn the ropes.
  22. One of mine did the same mate but with the first litter I looked in the nest to see how many she had ( didn't touch) then I went in a couple of days later n they'd all gone so I bred her again and haven't opened the door where she's nesting, but can hear the kits and I'm nt going to touch them till there eyes are open and they start wondering so far so good and they're still here 3 weeks on
  23. Alright (: They meant European Polecat, which is just a wild polecat.
