  1. As said i would go for a 3/4 whippet or a bed or collie cross whippet x whip/greyhound, should have a little more speed and be more versatile than the 1/2 bred.
  2. Is that material not used in some types of fishing braid?
  3. Seems to be poor on most of the Solway rivers, Esk is quiet, Eden also and the Derwent could not get any worse. Dont know what has happened this season hopefully they will come late but not holding my breath on that.
  4. I would run it on the lamp, that will give the dog a better chance to catch. I think it can be a problem with beddy/whipps as sometimes they can be on the small side and lack that bit of acceleration so have to work harder to get back on the rabbit. this is just my personal opinion, i have a first cross just about 18 1/2" that struggles a little bit for speed daytime and will have the odd sqeak, no problem (quiet) on lamp catches very well. Sometimes when running in fields with bumpy reedy ground she looses sight of them with being small then might have the odd squeak. whilst i would rather it
  5. any pics of these lures Aaron ..just out of interest Here you go. http://www.google.co...iw=1024&bih=676 I was given one of those white ones last season, tried it a few times and never had a touch on it. Maybe just bad luck. I think if you have faith in a lure of fly you seem to fish better, the ally shrimp is probably one of the best known salmon flies but i have tried them off and on for years and never even had a pull. I would not put one on now. Some other anglers i know cant go wrong with them.
  6. My favorite way to fish them, had a nice grilse on a #1 a couple of weeks ago. mepps are a great bait, tried them vibrax but not anything like as good as a mepp.
  7. condom, mepp, devon, toby, rapala, spoon any of these, in clear water i think a rapala takes beating.
  8. You use it for proding around in the hole you are digging to find the pipe (hole). sometimes you can be slightly off with your location, use can also use the locator to scan around the sides of the hole if you are off course and if you think the hole is to the side you could try the probe rather than digging a great big hole. They are usefull were there are roots and things to find the hole and then you are sure it is there before you start trying to digg roots out etc. This is what i use mine for anyway. As said if you have a little bit of metal disc or something welded on near the end you ca
  9. In some places a floating rapala can be very good as you can float it down the river under overhanging trees etc, good places for decent fish. It is easier to feeb the line off if you use thin floating braid around 3lb which is less diameter than 1lb mono, once you have got the lure where you want it crank it down and fish slow as possible. i ggod lure i like is the yo-zuri pin lure.
  10. I would agree mate, a lot of big trout are caught when deadbaiting for pike.
  11. How lucky to catch that one for a first fish he might take a long time to better it, very well done.
  12. If you get a shed and line it with ply i would do the cavity with polestyrene before you screw on the ply as it will make it warm in winter and cool in summer.
  13. My mates pups are doing well, he has got them all away bar 1 mostly to working homes. I fancy trying a kc type whippet myself for ferreting in the future, i like the look of these.
  14. I made a stainless probe a few years ago and have lost it so i made a one from 8mm steel, welded a little btit of flatbar on the bottom and shaped it with the grinder as has been said you can feel it in the pipe. Going to knock one up from 6mm stainless when i get time.
  15. All these would work, mepps is great, i like to fish them upstream. I like the tobys better when there is a little colour in the water, not good to fish upsteam although my kinked ones will fish upstream and also the little metal devon is good upsteam, i was fishing a 1" one upsteam one day for trout and as i always have polariods on to watch for fish chasing and turning away i managed to see a grilse chasing the devon downsteam when the lure got level with me the current whipped it round i saw the flash of its mouth and then felt its weight, was a gtreat fight on light gear was about 7lb. Thi
  16. This is a few of the types of lures i use for trout, sea trout and in bigger sizes Salmon. The toby type lures i make myself, the kinked lures i made myself, they have a different action than the toby.
  17. Found a few of the bomber flys that i made from Alan Hannas patern, had a few fish on them, the one on the right is the sunfish that i got my best pike on.
  18. She is making a cracking looking bitch and a good height also.
  19. I did a bit of pike fly fishing years ago, i found it very frustrating but when you did hook up it was brilliant fun. I found that i used to get loads of follows from some really big pike and then they would turn away at the last minute leaving me very frustrated, i could then cast a home made plug into the same bit and usually hook it. I had a dvd years ago which was brilliant, i think it was pike fishing with Alan Hannah but could be wrong, he invented them floating bombers that you can use with a floating line down to a lead core line as the line pulls the lure down and as the lure floats i
  20. is that rod an italian make, you done well It is a greys g-lite mate and shimano 750 reel, bought them and around 30 lures from ebay a couple of years ago for around £60 and i have had some great fun with it.
  21. Good film mate, looks a lovely place to be. would be good with the fly on there.
  22. No mate, out fishing and ferreting as much as i can so would not have time.
  23. Takes me about 4 hours to make the basket and 4 hours to tie on the bag, i could do it faster but i would get jigged up for the job, also i like to do as good of a job as possible. Just made a few for my mates and i have 4 myself with different nets in. I made steel ones at first and mig welded them, i tig weld the stainless so takes longer but is a tidy job. If you were making batches of these and you got jigged up you could half that time easily. I was going to try and make one out of thin plywood when i get time, just through interest as i like playing around making things.
