On this Day 1169- the arrival of the Normans (and rabbits!) The first landing of the Normans in Ireland occurred on 1 May 1169 when Robert FitzStephen and Maurice FitzGerald, at the invitation of the ousted King of Leinster, Dermot McMurragh, arrived with a force of about 300 at Bannow Island, Wexford. Bannow Island, now linked to the mainland by sandbars, is at the entrance to Bannow Bay on the south coast of Wexford.
