  1. food for thought alright. They also have a very long tail, which helps.
  2. Thanks ray. Be glad to see the back of the little marriage wreckers. Come on lads, don't be shy. 2 maybe 3 males left
  3. maybe the topic would have gone a different way if I hadn't used a specific breed. And just said rabbit dog.. It was meant to be more of a thought provoking thread aimed at the place of hunter and his dog in the cycle of nature. A.t.b
  4. I would think catching rabbits to put food on the table with the use of a small dog that toolk up minimal space and little feeding was first port of call for working class families and of course racing came afterwards
  5. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that they were not bred specifically to take hares, fox, rats, badgers, deer.im no historian but I think it's safe enough to assume for the sake of this topic that the whippet was in fact bred specifically for rabbits.
  6. King, like myself is just using the whippet as an example, given that is the one dog that was bred with nothing else in mind but the animal I was comparing it to, and unlike a lurcher which varies greatly from dog to dog.the whippet through a process of selective breeding "survival of the fittest" even, has a type. I'm not sure if people are genuinely missing the point. It's more likely just a case of "let's measure willies".
  7. Agreed king. Nobody looks for position of eyes when selecting a pup or Stud, it's more a case of form following function. Just look at a sighthounds eyes, are they not positioned differently and much more prominent from the skull compared to the deep set eyes of an earth dog? as I'm sure you know The sighthound that spots the most quarry has a better chance of catching more quarry and therefore has the best chance of being bred from(accelerated evolution). Maybe the name of topic is misleading. I'm not trying to say we have done better with animals then nature has. If u look again at the ori
  8. thanks gar. I'm hoping they live up to the expectations I have from this breeding
  9. Has to be said, I borrow the " evolution accelerated by man " quote from a post made by "jeemes" on a different topic but it seemed to fit here
  10. Just an observation.... Take a look at the side profile of a bunny.through natural selection ie .survival of the fittest, nature has deemed it necessary to equip these creatures with a roached back and that signature tucked in arse, allowing them to be powerful little sprinters over short distances. Would this description of their profile be a far cry from a dog bred for purpose, and in turn type ( evolution accelerated by man)with no other quarry in mind but the rabbit itself. Let's use the whippet as a comparison. Also the positioning of the bunnies eyes allows it to see danger approach
  11. Sire and two of the pups from other day . One on left is an especially fiery little f****r.
  12. Just got this bitch in the other day. 4 months old. Fingers x she works out.1/2 springer 1/4 beagle 1/4 sealyham terrier
  13. All joking aside, it's great to read a topic where people are genuinely trying to educate, without lowering themselves to the usuall bullshit of slagging off others that don't see their point of view... Intelligence, experience and humility. Very hard to carry all 3 characteristics and God knows I'm not talking bout myself. Great thread
  14. I just invented a proverb on the back of this thread.. " if you find the glass of knowledge is full, be prepared to spill a little out to make room for more"...... Quote by me....patent pending.. Lol
  15. There also a few lines p.b.t that throw a very simular type of dog in looks and traits. Pea's in a pod would not be a bad analogy
  16. the whippet I run at the moment comes from a line that throws a very similar type of dog. Most whippet enthusiasts would spot the type of breeding from across the field. Also the traits are very simular, to the point where you are surprised if you see a dog from this line behaving out of the norm or lacking certain qualities that the line is known for. Having said that... There is outcrosses along the way but as mentioned already , unfortunately it has to be done at some stage.
  17. 1St 1 went today to a real genuine dogman.3 males left. There is interest but no money has x hands yet.
  18. Very good thread so far.. Every day is a school day I guess. In my case I will probably never take the bullxwhippet breeding I did any further. Who knows what's down the road. But let's say for the sake of this conversation I do. If I felt the bitch I held back had it all physically, mentally and I found out 1 of her brothers was every bit as impressive if not more, I would have no problem going brother over sister.on the other hand if I was very impressed with her but figured she could do with an extra gear, wind, whatever.. My first choice then would be to put her father back over her. Wi
  19. Thanks jeemes, hopefully they do what's asked of them
  20. I knew I should have left that last drop of whiskey alone lol
  21. I just seen your previous full post, appollagies, I think we are both saying exactly the same thing. a.t.b
  22. I do agree with you that both purebreds most be outstanding and without any faults , however to come close to perfection it would require a man with good knowledge of breeding and more important ,give the dogs a tremendous amount of work needed to make some fair decisions on the stock he has in its kennels , the amount of time ,effort , money and disappointment would put most of. Just to add .for example your breed a litter of dogs lets say theres 8 , two years rearing ,give them a fair amount of work and in the end one or two make the grade ,the rest are culls , it would take years to bre
