That looks like a good days sport! I guess they've got a few about down there.

I've seen a few cleaned bucks now. This was the first that was showing signs, The video seems to loose quality once uploaded, on the camera you can see it all very clearly? We didn't shoot the 2 does that were with each of these bucks. Cheers, Mark.

Hi Tom, From what I've seen this year the deer in my area have done fine. The older does had plenty of fat on after the snow left and I've seen lots of good bucks with nice looking heads in velvet. I saw one about 10 days ago that was half clean of velvet. My dad was speaking to a local pro stalker the other day and he said he'd seen two dead deer and one small buck which couldn't stand up when he went near it. Maybe in some local areas the yearlings are suffering? But on my ground there is plenty of feeding and I certainly haven't seen this. Wireviz, I don't know about the shakes b

Just had an e-mail from a regular summer client who took a medal roebuck trophy back home with him and had it scored. The buck was shot at the end of August last year and was the clients first ever Roebuck, he comes over for Pigeon shooting every year. It made 122.9 cic with a dry weight of 526 grams. This was the 7th medal from last year out of 28 bucks taken during 40 outings, a 25% medal buck average! Something I'd love to repeat agin this year. See the video here. Cheers, Mark.

A better week than the last few.

It was nice out this morning, clear and crispy, with a great sunrise. The client shot his first ever deer and a second just for good measure! I only shoot young does at this time of the season, only a couple of more stalks and i'll be done. That makes 11 from the last 5 stalks. Cheers, Mark. -

Well done John. I'm fortunate up here with the ground I've got, I've had about 40 Does so far this winter and only 2 blank outings. We were stalking last week and counted 31 Roe one morning, the last four stalks have accounted for 3 doubles and a tripple cull. I always find things tend to get easier up here when we get into February. Cheers, Mark. -
Very nice picture! I love the big Roe bucks and the freak heads. We were out most of today shooting Roe Does and saw several very big bucks, one was half cleaned of velvet and sure to be a big medal. Cheers, Mark.

why do deer stalkers charge so much
mj robson replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
John Robbo, As I stated at the start of the thread I don't just rely on stalking for my income. In an average year I do 20 weeks of Goose/Game/Duck shooting and 20 weeks of Pigeon shooting but only take about 25 bucks in 3 weeks of stalking and up to 60 Does a winter. I also get Doe stalking on a large local estate as well as my own areas. Having said that 3 weeks at the bucks will generate the same income for me as 8 weeks pigeon shooting in the summer doing 6 days a week! I get my companies public liability insurance through Melrups and it costs an arm and a leg!! Pl -
why do deer stalkers charge so much

You're never going to please everyone. I charge £ for Roe Does (multiple culls, no extra fee) and that includes the 1st carcase and people have still told me that's too expensive! Mark. -

I guess it must be difficult for some stalkers as they will make their whole yearly earnings just from stalking and have to charge enough to make a living! I'm lucky it's just part of my bussiness and most of my money is made elsewhere. Somebody must be willing to pay their prices or they wouldn't be in bussineess for long? Cheers, Mark. -
The best meat to use is diced cuts from around the neck. If done right it's very similar to Lamb. Cheers, Mark.

Up here in Scotland we had 4 weeks of cold and snow. On our cock shoot we shot 3 woodcock and I made sure to check them all. Perfect condition all round! Mark.

Alhoy, You can use decoys on crown foreshore in Scotland. Unless you are on a permit run area, in which case you need to check the rules for that specific area. I'm not aware of any that forbid decoying. In some areas you will find folk that frown upon goose decoys being used, especially on areas used for roosting. But they don't make the rules! Decoys are less effective on morning flights as most of the birds are leaving the foreshore to feed inland and don't pay much attention to decoys, unless they are feeding on an area of merse grass below the tideline. Scotland is a big place!!! They appear to be doing well in my corner. Mark.

I was out for a stalk this morning and shot a big mature doe. It had loads of fat around it Kidneys, inner fillets and above it's tail. I saw 31 Roe in total for the morning and a group of 13 which had a big mature buck with a cracking fully developed 6 point head, still in velvet, but impressive non the less. And a young buck with a small freak head. I watched them for 30 minutes but decided to leave them in peace. Cheers, Mark.

Brusletto do very good knives. I also have a Mora frost which I bought for £10 which is as good as any I've had. Mark.

What condition were your birds in? Some guys have said they are getting very thin birds but they are all from down south. I've had 17 inland with clients and they were all good bar 1 which I think was a pricked bird. Cheers, Mark.

There has been a white Greylag in the Tay/Loch Leven area for the past 3 seasons now. I've been laid out on the sand at Seaside and had it 100 yards away from me with a big group of greys a couple of seasons ago. It was at Loch Leven for several weeks earlier this season. cheers, Mark.

17 points AND a gold medal..........don't think it gets much better than that!!! I've heard of 13 point freaks before but 17 must be some sort of record. Great buck!! Mark.

If you had a cull figure in mind before all the cold weather the best thing you could do is stick to it and get it shot as quickly as possible, then leave the rest of the deer in peace. Six deer compeating for the same food are going to fair better than ten. They aren't having any problems here yet, plenty of Kale, turnips, fodder beet tops, rape...etc Had a fat doe (going to make sausages!) and a yearling from a group of 14 yesterday morning, it's not uncommon for us to see big groups around the food source in any winter. Cheers, Mark.

When I get overseas visitors coming to shoot with me Fife police will not issue a Visitors Permit unless they are staying in a B&B or Hotel with a secure firarms safe, of which there are several in this area. If you are coming to Scotland look for the hotels that regularly take shooters and most of them should have gun safes. Mark.

The days of the 10g are over! I used nothing else but a 10g for 12 seasons, but for the last 6 or 7 years have been using a 3.5" 12g Xtrema. You can get the same performance as the 10 when you homeload for the 12. Plus you can use it for Pigeons/Duck....etc and get used to using it rather than just a goose gun like a 10g. The biggest advantage I see is the 12g is 4lbs lighter than the 10g, makes a big difference when you've got a long walk into position. Cheers, Mark.
