  1. FD, They usually measure the antler lengths when the skull is boiled off. They start from the base of the coronet and measure along the main beam to the tip, using a cloth tape to follow the contours. They then do the other side and take an average. The biggest I have had was 28.3cm and was the 2nd longest gold recorded that year, not many go above 29cm in the annual review. I think I read that the big buck shot by Marco P-W was 32cm long? Your buck looks pretty long and straight, I bet the cavemen would have strapped it to a hazel stick and gone hunting Dinosaurs with it!!!
  2. That buck looks like it would do a bit of damage in a fight!
  3. That would be a real shame if it ever came to this. Here's a couple of the 7 medal heads he's had this week. He's got Talent that no piece of paper can replace! I've learned a lot from him in the last 5 years. Mark.
  4. I have level 1 and was registered for level 2 but I never got round to doing it so the registration ran out about 2 years ago. I'll probably get round to doing it some time in the future. A keeper I know has some of the best stalking in the country for Roe and has vast experience, yet he didn't do well at school and can't read or write well. What would happen if people like him were made to sit these tests??? Mark.
  5. I like 10x mag as the ground I stalk is quite open. I also use a 30x spotting scope for a good look up close.
  6. Nice looking bucks. I must take the camera out more often. Cheers, Mark.
  7. JD, After 48 hours force dried in my boiler room the big buck weighed in at 600g, if it follows the trend of all the big heads I've dried the same way it won't loose any more weight. I've got an old buck that scored 139 hanging on the wall and this one looks to have a bit more volume than that but is 60g lighter. The only thing going against this buck is the lack of span, everything else is good. I'd expect it will make a bottom end gold. Cheers, Mark.
  8. The buck was in good condition with a weight of 19kg head and legs off. The stalker showed the head to an ex government vet and he called it an "oclusion" caused by an injury/infection during velvet developement. I've seen freak heads due to velvet damage before but nothing like this. Cheers, Mark.
  9. The results from the last 3 days, 6 outings. Cheers, Mark.
  10. It was a bit difficult to clean properly. The lump was mainly solid with some bits like hard shell that broke away during cleaning. Cheers, Mark.
  11. Here are a few pics of an abmormal buck we shot this morning. It had a growth bigger than a golf ball on the front of the coronets. It was hard in some places and shell like in others with dried up blood on the inside. Cheers, Mark.
  12. Thanks Vmax, yesterday we must have seen 50+ roe between the 2 stalks, and some very promising young bucks still in velvet. Here is a pic of the big fella in the daylight, And another nice buck we had on tonights stalk, Cheers, Mark.
  13. Thanks guys. Here's a pic of the heads cleaned off this morning. The big buck is weighing in at 650g for the moment. Cheers, Mark. ps, John, I've sent you a PM about a guy looking for witnessed stalks.
  14. Well guys I was out with a client after some good bucks I've spotted recently, starting at daybreak this morning. We went to a wood where I knew there was a good buck working and sure enough as soon as it got light we spotted him going back into the wood! Typical of those big old bucks! We then stalked down into another wood nearby and onto a buck I'd seen last week, he was out with 5 others in the middle of a setaside strip catching a few rays. Then this evening we went to another rape field nearby and took this buck at 17:00. We headed back to the wood where we saw the big
  15. There isn't much grass seed about at this time of the year???? The are eating the new growth of Clover, especially on wet days when the drillings are clangy and sticks to their feet. I've had 3 x 100+ bags on clover this spring. The good thing about it is you can leave birds to build up on the field and they won't eat it off like drillings and the farmers don't mind like on Rape where they do damage. Mark.
  16. Well done guys. Heaviest I've had to date was 53lbs. And I thought that was heavy
  17. I'm busy with my Pigeon shooters just now, but while I've been out spotting for Pigeons in the afternoons I've been seeing dozens of Roe out feeding and taking advantage of this warm weather we're enjoying just now. I was out at 11:00 on a local estate and saw a buck in a group of 5 grazing on a grass park. I went in to the keepers house to grab his Ziess 20x60's for a closer look. At 200 yards I got a good eyeful, a definate gold medal. The estate stalker will be up in 2 weeks for a go. I then went for a drive round some of my ground at 3pm and counted 30+ Roe out in a half hour drive.
  18. Well done, looks like a tasty bite! I was watching 3 bucks last night, 1 clean and 2 in velvet but were all too good for me to take. I'm sure they'll make some future client happy. Mark.
  19. I hope it stops snowing before the 1st!!!!
  20. Hunter_zero, I think you'll find the law is set out a little differantly in Scotland. The term "expanding ammunition" is used, of which a BT certainly is. Having said that I have to agree with Mr Logic, the law is clearly set out to stop people using match bullets on deer. I us nothing but soft points when stalking, I'll save the BT's for the foxes! Mark.
  21. Clint, This is a good time of year to see big groups of Roe Deer out feeding, the Does are putting on the pounds to grow their babies and the vegitation is starting to sprout new goodness! It's quite common for me to see groups well into the teens, the most I've seen in 1 field this last winter was 26 and a few years ago 37! All Roe Deer in my area. Cheers, Mark.
