  1. Forum at its most helpful there, thanks
  2. I really didnt want to get into this conversation.... I am not asking for approval, i am simply asking for advice on working these polecats, If you dont work them or know anything about working them then dont bother commenting. I know that they are the real deal otherwise I would not have traveled half way across the country to buy them, I am just after some advice.
  3. I really hope they settle to work well. Im sure they are EUs, got them from a reliable source and they are just so different to my ferrets. Anyone working them at all??
  4. Just wanted to show you guys my new Polecats I picked up on Monday from Derbyshire. They are still a bit shy but I can pick them up without any bother and they have settled in well with a couple of my other ferret jills. They are a lot thicker set than my ferrets and obviously look and behave differently. I am made up with them I plan to work them this season and I was wondering if anyone else had any tips for working pure Polecats on rabbits. I have heard that it can be a challenge.... I know i am going to need some bigger collars for a start as I only work little Jills at the moment!!
  5. Look for a guy called James McKay. HE has a lot of ferrets and polecats etc. His website is www.honeybank.co.uk/ferret-school. Give him a shout Jack
  6. Does having him "done" affect their working at all??
  7. Took her to the vet this morning after finding a large lump in her stomach. Sadly she was put down this morning as the vet said there was no chance she could recover and that she was suffering. I'm gutted at loosing her, I han reared her from a kit and she's been working for 6 years. She must have had hundreds of rabbits in her time!!! Thanks so much for all the advice I really appreciate it. Looking forward to next season with the remaing 10 stinkers. Thanks again
  8. What sort of natural alternative to ferretone would you recommend?
  9. Just spoke to the vet, he agrees that oil is a good idea so thanks for that. Going to give her some ferretone. The belly doesnt seem swollen, more like it is sagging or the skin is sagging. She's seems pretty bright now and has curled up on my coat. I was going to put her back with the others or do u think she would be better left on doors?? Thanks for all the replies
  10. Thanks for all the replies, I've got her in the house now and she's just wolfed down 6 bits of fresh rabbit. Seems a bit brighter in herself, gums seem ok. I have noticed the last few times she went to the toilet only a small amount came out?? I'm Lamping tonight so I should be able to get her some rabbit kidney or hearts tonight. Should I be worried about giving her too much?
  11. Shes had some rabbit and normal cow milk today. Got her in the living room now and shes mooching around slowly. Her belly seems really saggy and drags along the floor. Is that just because ive fed her the milk and meet today?? Going to take her to the vets first thing.
  12. My best Jill ferret has suddenly lost a lot of weight. Her ribs and back bone are clearly visible. She is quite old, not sure exactly but certianly over 4 yrs old. The other two Jills in with her have not lost any weight at all. I haven't changed the food, or the amount i am feeding. I have given her some rabbit today and she ate that but i was wondering if there was anything else i could give her to get her back to full strength. She seems a bit spaced out when she walks about and seems to rest on her belly as well. I have noticed that she is the only one that larders her foo
  13. Can anyone recommend some books or DVDs for training up a lurcher pup. I've got "The Working Longdog" but i was wondering if anyone had heard of any others Many Thanks
  14. How are you going about the house training, im after some tips before i buy my pup. Got a small house with cream carpets!!! i know.....not exactly ideal conditions. Ive got a cage and the kitchen is lynolium floored. Any tips??
  15. All the best with them mate
  16. Im sure this topic has been done to death but i thought i would ask for some advice anyway.... I have been ferreting for a few years now and have been using my patterdale to help out where he can, but recently i have been getting into lamping. Ive been out a few times with a friend of mine and it would be fair to say ive got the bug!! The permission we have got for both the ferreting and the lamping mainly consists of relatively small fields rather than open arable fields and it has everything on it.... Ive been reading "The Working Longdog" by F.Sheardown which is a great book but a b
  17. Thanks for all the advice, im very impressed with all the initiative!! Going with the disco gels i think, i have no idea what type of lamp it is so trying to buy a filter to fit may be a challenge. Thanks all the same. I did the bit of ground in mentioned without any filter again on saturday but i went round it a different way. Had much more success. My mates whippet cross nailed 4 out of 5 runs which was great to see. Thanks again
  18. ahh, didnt think of that. Thanks
  19. Got a great bit of permission for the dogs but the bunnies are a little bit wise to the lamp. Im going out tomorow night and i was going to try changing the colour of the beam. Ive shot on a red lamp before and i was going to try that again. Anyone made a DIY filter, i was thinking of using red cellophane?? Any comments much appreciated
