Sprockers what is the benefit of the cross?
danw replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
To my mind the field trials have caused the gradual decline of the true working spaniel they require a dog that works like a whirlwind for 10 minutes at a time hence the decrease in size and stature whilst in the real world we want dogs to go all day hunting a cover methodically and at a sensible pace, people seem to think that if a pedigree is not all red then the dogs are no good this is just not true, thankfully there are lines still going that breed a proper dog uncompromised by trial blood but they are few and far between -
Gamekeeping. Past, present and future.

Good man same as that except maybe not so young LOL most of us piss and whinge about the job but wouldn't/couldn't' ever do anything else -
Agree totally with this all I would add is that my dogs are bred to suit me that does not necessarily mean that my friends like or want the same

For me mate assuming it is necessary through litter size or excess of either sex I weigh every pup at birth and check for deformity any defect and it goes then at 3 days I reweigh the litter and having observed them at some length to determine which fight for the tit and which are pushed out or hold back I cull the lightest or least determined from either sex as to my requirements.

yep that will be the same people who tried to insist that I took the dsc when I wanted to change from a .243 to 26-06 even though I already had the .243 for deer their argument was that the 25 was more dangerous than the 243 1 call from the basc sorted that one

Not seen any down here yet (south coast) nothing better to focus the guns than the shout of "Woodcock"

,you dont have to answer me............ but you were the one who said you kept breeding from a bitch that couldn't, in YOUR words, "handle the pups" !! So, once again......... why keep breeding from her ???? May be this thread is confusing you but I answered that question in post 96

Aye and I have a bitch here that has large litters but cannot handle them no mater what but reduce that to 5/6 and she does well and so do the pups to me it is all about recognising the fact that she was struggling and acting on it Then why he hell line the bitch if she can't handle them? Cheers. Because she is an excellent bitch with lots of traits that I find desirable and is ideal for continuing the line and with due respect till she had been lined how would you know if she could handle them or not?? ERR, with due respect; it was YOU who said she couldn't handle

Genuine question how may have sold pups and a buyer has turned out to be a messer if you can hand on heart say that every pup you have born has had and stayed in a good home then fair enough if however you can't??
-
here's the thing though you keep them for work but the reality is that thats your hobby I would not keep 1 spaniel if I didnt' do this job. dan its more a way of life than a hobby with me ive had them since i was born other than for a short time . way back in the seventies i packed a well paid job in and was working them flat out and beleive me there wasnt a running dog in the country that was worked harder than mine during this period.i have worked my dogs all., over the uk and met loads of good freinds through running the dogs,so to me its much more than a hobby. in my eyes anyway.out of

NO I didn't say you dont' know how to rear a good pup but if you only rear for your self why bring off a litter so large? I have to replace at least 4-5 dogs every year to maintain the 3 of us at a consistent level meaning I need to have at least 1 litter a year I will not let the line be f****d by anyone so will not let anyone other than close family and a couple of select keeper mates take one so why keep big litters to me it is far better for the dam and pups to cull down to what we need replaced and no more. Please note these are spaniels and not lurchers (I buy lurchers in) but to be h

I see it different but respect your opinion

LOL 2 litters in 10 years you must know all the answers then.

If only every one thought like this the well being of the bitch should always come before that of the pups a proper stock man can see when the number of pups is pulling the bitch and litter down and act appropriately there aint nothing big or hard about it, it is-just stockmanship a skill sadly lacking in most. Wouldn't a good "stockman" ensure that the bitch has ample food and care to compensate for what the pups take out of them? If you see the difference in a litter of say 6 pups as opposed to 11 has on a bitch and the litter then you would know that food aint gonna make the dif

danw replied to stroller's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
All I would say is please don't believe that piece of paper you get from the kennel club is any guarantee that your dog is a cocker or springer when it could well be a sprocker I hope not I thought I had two labs lol the abuse of the kc includes labs I know for a stud that apparently sired a litter a year after it died it can 5 years after it died you only av to av seman frozen and stored if you wanted to keep a line going so no need to bang ya head Aye but the one I know for was never milked. -
I remember a good few years back me and a mate(tramp1 of here) were doing a bit of lamping on my shoot ground. Anyway there was a long ear sitting out, so he slipped the dog. Nice chase back and forward a few times then 'bang' the dog nailed it....but he kept going with the lamp... I said " What the f**k are you doing the dogs got it?".....he said " No its not!!"...as he followed the hare into the distance wondering where the dog was? Turned the lamp back to the dog and there it was with one of my Red legged Partridges in its gob............... :censored: Thats some admission mat
