    my staff x lab . all-round brilliant dog . rabitting, bushing,roughshooting,beating. she never lets me down . not the most fashionable , but who gives a shit . my uncle also takes her out with his labs picking up . you should see the guns faces , the labs are nackerd after about 4 drives , but she keeps going . and to add to that she was a rescue dog , never seen a days work befor i got her and as soon as i took her out with the lurchers , i knew she had what it takes . only 1 1/2 so ive got plenty more to come from her . i must say that befor i had her i wasnt one for staffs rather jumping

    Have to agree with you nathgoon. Just to add a couple of things, if you are one of the many lads looking to get a start you have to make yourself stand out from the crowd. In my opinion you can't beat an apprenticeship/nvq but if you choose to go to college use your time wisely. Get as many tickets as you can and don't spend your holidays sat on your arse, especially the summer when you could be grafting on a rearing field somewhere. A bit of time working for free could pay dividends when you need a reference or the keeper you've been helping hears of a job! well said Another thing pl

    Times have changed.i didnt go to college,i started the hard way and was taught by old school keepers although i did do a YTS sceme with rural pursuits in which i hated and didnt see the whole course through.im affraid any wana be keepers id advise to get into a college,do EVERY course you can get,including the forestry/land management side of things,this way your options are left wide open.many commercial shooting estates want to see paper work rather than dirty hands nowadays. agreed , but , abit of first hand experiance always looks good on your cv

    ater seeing quite a few wee youngans putting up posts about aprentaships etc . i thought illjust give you lot some advice . alot country lads these days want to become gamekeepers (like myself) . if your serious about it go beating, write to local farm shoots, and write to gamekeepers. i understand we all dont have a book full of contacts so i would recomend you make getting into beating your priority. there is alot of very good courses on offer but as my grandad and dad say gamekeeping cant be learnt in a text book . offer free help and show your entusiastic and get somewere belive me . i

    another one you are one of hundreds maybe thousands of blokes looking for permission. get out knock on doors . personally i wouldnt let someone i dont know jack all about on my land , but there might be a few farmers near you needing help. i would also leave it abit until the weather gets better and warmer so the rabbits will be out for all to see and when there turning there attention to crops . good luck youll need it

    all modern day pats are bred from frank buck a cyril breays old stuff, so i quess all are bucks dogs . there is a few i know of sean frain has fell, a dog from buck breay lines but i dont know of any directly form buck own lines .

    labs are naturaly very obidient and calm when around other dogs and game , personaly i think at 4 mounths every bit of training is essential but as long as he doesnt run off and lose it when he sees another dog or human he should be ok , in my experiance labs very placid and and eager to please , although i have never owned one my self being more of a spaniel person so im no expert . just practice basic heal training and getting him used to the sound of shotguns and the smell of game and you should be ok because theres nothing worse that a dog that legs it on the trail of a deer or rabbit i
