  4. I tilt my arm slightly to avoid getting a face full of hook...but if you were to be sensible you would wear glasses
  5. Have a look in Buch's thread regarding the different types of rod because the length and weight line you are going to use is different depending on the type of place and size of fish. The brand Greys is supposed to be decent enough but there's a load of different makes out there. I imagine modern rods are pretty well made and light enough but it's probably worth going having a lesson or two so you can handle the different lengths and weights etc. You can get a reel for peanuts so you can put a little more in to the rod. Here's a cheap Greys but I have no idea how good they are http

  11. if it's river fishing you will be doing mostly then maybe a lighter line and shorter rod would be best. Not sure how big the Avon is but bare this in mind. try not to part with any money without talking to someone who fishes that stretch because a rod reel and spools aren't cheap. Totally agree about the romanticism of river fishing...brown trout on a dry line...can't think of much else better
  12. Yhe best make all the mistakes and get that out of the way...I think it's a good idea to just accept you'll screw up your first dog (unlike me that had illusions of grandeur ) and then take that experience on to the next one. It would be nice to just experience working a dog for a change rather than trying to fix a broken one but that's dog training I guess
  13. If you don't want to vote for anyone you should still spoil your ballot paper. Not voting is the same as voting for who ever in the main party in your area. It's obviously up to you but I think not voting is crazy, it's never good to have safe seats for the sponging b*****ds. Voting against anyone who has a seat will keep them on their toes.
  14. I was thinking about this but I'm not sure if it would be that more expensive. Since a pup cost 500 quid and a trained dog 1500-2000. But there's a years worth of food, all the vets bills etc and the training that's gone in to it. I bet I've spent more than 2000 grand on my dog with training classes etc and I still buggered it all up. The only good thing about training my own is I learned all the things not to do for the next time
  15. Most of them aren't career politicians but they are starting to attract them....UKIP has had 30 council defections from the conservatives and also a liberal democrat ex mayor. I think they appeal to all walks of life but especially traditional Labour voters. Who are the people being hurt by the open borders? It's the working class and tradesmen not rich bankers. It's not the kids of the rich that suffer when low skills foreign workers come over here and it is one thing that makes me puke. In the 'old days' kids leave school and get a crappy job for low pay. They aren't very useful but at t
  16. Yes mate Fishing from a boat you have to be sitting down so you tend to use a longer rod like 9'6" or 10'. You only have to cast once though as the fish are pretty much under you and there's no need to flog the water trying to get your line out. You tend to lift you rod up and as the line forms a belly and stops moving you can do a sort of roll cast. In many ways it's easy but I find sitting still difficult. River fishing for salmon is often done with a double handed rod (Spey fishing in Scotland) which is a very different technique than a single handed one. But the rod you use for a l
