The good old hw80, what a sound bit of kit. Had a little play with mine way back in the early 90s, up in the mid 20s ft lb wise

Just got back from ferreting, funny enough i used both trammel and trad rigged long nets. Both caught rabbits, both had bounce offs. The trammel was rigged in quick sett fashion, the trad rigged net was on end pins. The place we were working is a field of set a side, mostly old nettle storks and those horrid little buggers that have just started to grow, My fingers are tingling as i type. When it came to lifting the nets i took the trad set net and my ferreting partner (who hassome 30yrs experiance netting and ferreting) took the trammel. what with all the storks and the fact he had to rem

I thought with all the people on here that use long nets there would have been more post regarding the trad rigged long net. In my work i use both trad set and quick set nets and i find them to work both smoothly and do as they are intended (to catch rabbits) I have worked these both on my own and as part of a team and found it is normally the netters that are at fault not the method, by this i mean to much noise, sky lining themselves, approaching the drop in the wrong direction ect..... I have also used the trammel and i must say as ive stated before that this net seems to be in my opinion

Damage by rabbits is a thing to expect with long netting, so a quick and easy removal is important to stop damage. Is this why it is adviserble to kill all enmeshed rabbits befor trying to remove them? Most of the land i work with nets is up and down to say the least, so in my method of working with a trad rigged net it often pays to leave the bottom line slack to hug the contours of the ground so to speak. As most if not all the trammels ive seen are quick set rigged i dont think this would be posible as the need to keep a tight top line is important. Speaking of a rabbit chewing t

so we have sang about the good qualities of the trammel, now lets look at some of the good points of the trad rigged net. see if i can get the ball rolling. if the net were used in a trad style(not a basket system) with hazle pegs i fell it offers a degree of quietness for night time work, be it single handed or as a team of two. As with both types of net bounce offs WILL AND DO happen, dont think you will stop them. when a capture is made removal of a rabbit is lot less messing about than a trammel IMHO. what about the making and rigging of a trad net? the simplicity of its design has

this new net has a good lot more bagging than the net behind you in the picture chalkie, i think that i why when i have read about others using trammels and having no escapees , this point about a trammel having more bag helps caputre rabbits when you look at how a trammel works this is a bit hard to agree with. just by the way in which a trammel will purse a rabbit within a single mesh, and holds it tight how will the lose bagging be able to slid along the running lines? as the trapped rabbit will hold it back within the confines of the 9inch mesh

ok ,...so we now know that a correct set trammel will catch, never doubted it wouldnt. this post was about what we as netters feel is the best all round type of long net. we have heard a few of the up sides regarding the trammel in a daytime set, now im going to be the devils advicate and say this.... IMHO what you have in a trammel re: night work is a real bundle of trouble waiting to happen. Regardless to it being rigged trad set or quick set lets look at this..... It has all ready been stated that a trammel ties up a rabbit to the poiint where it allmost becomes a pain to remove

very true,no customer wants to see rabbits escape..... so on what has just been said a trammel is a good daytime net but lacking in certain respects at night. what about the trad net at night? after all the question was about the better, not best all rounder. what are your views on the trad net at night? POINT OF QUESTION: if the trad net is lacking in its holding abillities how do we think it could be improved upon WITHOUT THE AID OF THE EXTRA 9INCH MESH? would a larger or smaller mesh size be worth a go? what about more bagging? what about the setting height? would any o

SO,.....at this point of the debate we have a few factors being brought to our attention. weight.. speed of setting, lifting ease of removal rabbit bounce offs what about the skill needed to set a trammel, would this be a good net to start a netting career with or would you advise a season on the trad (quick set as well as trad set) long net? POINT OF QUESTION: would it be unwise to use a trammel in a traditional way with end pins or would it be advisable to use with the quick set method? for every question answered, 2 more arise ......

a trammel net is the same as a long net but it has a 9inch mesh net on both sides aswell. when a rabbit enters the net it takes the 4.25 mesh net through a large mesh and forms a small pouch, much like a purse net.

I would prefer to use the standard net as i can see that whilst working under the cover of darkness that a trammel net could be quite awkward to kill. Also the two side walls on a trammel are adding weight onto the net. with this answer we now have to think about the weight of a net, is it a big thing that a net weighs a few oz more? you say more awkward to kill, if this is so would it not be adviserbly to carry a small priest like samon fishermen? keeping with this vein of thought what about the ease of removing a rabbit from either net, would that be something to consider befor usi

please explain why?

SIMPLE QUESTION; in your opinion which is the better ALL ROUND net to use? THINGS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN ANSWERING. 1, ease of use both day and night 2,DONT COMPARE TRADSET AGAINST QUICKSET ( this debate has been done to death) 3, Please dont let this debate become an ego bashing thing, stay away from personal digs. 4, give personal experiances that have helped you to draw your own conclusions. I have posted this question as a way of gathering a persons input and experiances of the netting game out of idol curiosity, this isnt intended to prove whos methods are bett

Trammel nets be fecked, tryed them, loathed them, wont use them. Daytime use with kicking rabbits, twigs, leaves and 3 hanging nets in one can only lead to one thing.........more time spent removing shite and less time doing the job in hand. POINT OF QUESTION: if trammel nets are the new wonder tool of todays netting game, why arnt they about insted of the long net as we know it today? simple realy when you think about it. Years ago when the netters needed a solid method to catch and feed their family they would have tryed the trammel long befor some of us went about re-inventing the w

in answer to your question about chain break on or off, you should have the chain break on(so the chain doesnt spin as you pull start it) most saws wont let you start it without the chain breaked. if you try and start it with the chain spinning or drop start it you will FAIL on safety issues. done mine last november

as they say on all good horror films "" your not alone"" i suffer insomnia anyway but like yourself i cant sleep when i get home. Tryed allsorts, beer ,cups of tea, fishing vids (they have me asleep in about 15mins normally) but all to no avail. ive found a good answer is to simple wake the wife and after she has given me a right hook to the jaw im asleep no probs :black eye:
