  4. I haven't a clue, farmer that found the hen, I never saw it. There's not usually trouble with mink or badgers in that place. Remington VL SS .223 and don't know the range, something between 120 and 150 yards maybe, close enough not to be bothered ranging it for sure. Yeah there sure is a lot at this time of year Murph, I haven't really bothered going out after them properly yet as I'm busy with the farm and other things, need my beauty sleep don't ya know lol. I find it helps keep the rifle steady in high winds Clint lol. Ah no, I was getting a bit of glare fr
  5. Got a call this afternoon while I was opening drains on my farm. Hen taken night before last, could I take a look when I'm able too. Sure, just depends on the weather. Checked the provincial forecast on Met Eireann when I got home, looked good so I got all my bits and pieces together and headed off in the car. Checked backpack and lamp, all good, screw on mod, fill magazine, bolt in, 'pod legs out, and away I go. Walk over the first hillock, full moon out, fox sitting looking at me right where I expected him. Crouch down, clip on lamp quietly, always keeping it pointing in foxys di
  6. Know anyone with a fox cage? borrow it, bait and wait. Shouldn't take long at all.
  7. I liked the cold weather, though it was tough on the animals. The rain however, that was just friggin monotonous. Can't get flooded where I am, yer either traveling uphill or downhill, there's damn all flat! Anyways, going by the radio the last morning Biffo don't feel the cold.
  8. Good suggestion that, it's worth a punt. I've only heard T8 and an ASE, the T8 was quieter. Still pissing myself about rust with my T8 but so far so good

    Sheep?

short and simple i like it lol!!!! what type do you keep mate Small flock of blackies. Sheep can be quite a bit of work compared to other animals. I'll always have them though, Spring time is great when you see a bunch of lambs doing the rounds at full tilt

    Sheep?

Yes. No. Yes. To the OP
  11. Severe disadvantage, what do you think Ray? I reckon you have the description nailed down to a tee Clint! The drains are in place already, just that they have not been cleaned out for a few years. Winter is the best time for that job IMO, not much will be growing and the ground will be soft from all the rain and short days we'll get. Soak pipes don't work so good here, peat type land which tends to clog them up, plus they're big money to install, trenching, pipes, pea gravel, labour etc. compared to the margin made on sheep farming. Open drains dug by hand or machine are the order of
  12. Clint, My intention is to improve the farm for my Scottish Blackface flock, so I can improve my flock not only through breeding but by better management as well. Connemara, where I live, is where God put all the left over crap from building the rest of the world. All the spare mountains, bogs, rocks, rivers, marshes and swamps Years ago, farmers could only build dry stone walls to mark out their fields from their neighbours and keep their stock under control. We have stone walls here that entire bogs grew over and covered thousands of years ago. The stones I talk about are rea
  13. Nah, most of the area is no go for tractors, it really is that rocky, full of walls, etc :)They're not clean fields if I can put it that way, they're absolutely full of obstacles
  14. My first port of call last night was to a farm where the odd hen gets knocked off now and then. I'd only been there once in the past few months so it was time for a visit. After setting up in my usual look out spot, no sooner than I had turned the call on I see a pair of fox eyes belting in towards me. Settling down with the rifle and having clipped the lamp to the scope I found the fox in the scope. After shouting nine or ten times at this fox it decided to stop at just over the one hundred yard mark. The Federal Premium 40 grain entered through the chest and made quite an exit through th
  15. Martin is right. Kroil is the stuff for it, WD40 is like piss compared to it. Reloading Solutions used to carry it, most likely still do. If that don't work then gunsmith. Personally I would have the bore inspected at a gunsmiths, if that's OK then chop the last inch of the barrel and get a recrown and screw cut. Not sure how the mod will fare out. I'd put money the crown is pitted to sh1t, and I'd be concerned about the condition of the bore. Not much point in telling ya should have checked before buying Presuming you get it sorted out, get some copper grease for the threadi
  16. Like the look of this spreader, under $300 in the USA but €580 here in Rip Off Ireland
  17. Can't argue with you there Ray Am looking to turn it into a more productive mountain though Have sprayed all them rushes that were obscuring your, eh, liberated target board the last time It's not a bad piece of land for around here, just let go for too long
  18. The small capacity of the spreader suits me well. The land is quite uneven - not rolling hills, but humps, bumps, tussocks, rocks, marshy bits, walls everywhere and so forth So it's still a huge improvement for me in reducing physical work load and speed in carrying out the operation. I saw the Quad X stuff, a bit too expensive for me to be honest. I won't be spreading fert until March anyway, Seed likely at the end of next summer, not entirely sure on the lime, could probably spread that in December when the sheep would be pushed out to the hill. I've a bit more tire kicking to do on thi
  19. My .223 is something around 14lbs I guess. It was 13.5 before I had the moderator added.
  20. Hi folks, I know we've got one or two farmers here and maybe one or two others who may have set foot upon a farm at one time or another My plan is to eventually buy a quad/atv for the farm. Sick and tired of hauling everything on my back But, I'm first collecting a few bits and pieces as I don't want the large outlay for the machine itself and be able to do sweet feck all with it. I've bought a 55 litre sprayer which should be arriving early this week. Now I'm looking to get something which will spread granulated fertilizer (18.6.12 and the like), non granulated lime (powde
  21. Hi folks, Quick question. Live catch cage trap targeting mink. I know either two dowels or an upside down U of strong bull wire will exclude say cats which are the problem. How wide should I be making the gap between the dowels/wire to let mink in and exclude others. I read it here before but can't find it now. ATB, John
  22. 40 yards, 36 gram BB's, get him side on as the ribs offer little to no protection. Don't shoot at him if his tail is what you're looking at and he's heading away.
