Fair call that mate, yes I think Ramos is good at what he does but I don’t think he is Maldini good........Maldini is actually one of my personal all time favourite players mate so it’s very rare I ever compare anyone to him. edited to add: Just watched that video and maybe it’s me, but I can’t see much wrong with any of it?

24 red cards in how long ? Edited to add: Just had a look, it’s 16 years ! The most carded player in La Liga history......which tells me the bloke is super competitive and doing his job. Ramos won Real Madrid the 2018 cl final, Benzeema May have scored goals but Ramos won them the game make no mistake and he won them it early when he put Salah out of action. Imho he knew exactly what he was doing, Salah was talismanic to Liverpool that’s season and when he went off you could see the whole team walk off with him mentally. That is top class experienced defending.

Just as an aside, I’d say one of the best player I have seen who has worked out how to get away with old school defending in the modern game is Sergio Ramos.

Oh I agree but I think you have to add in the fact that defenders are so limited on what they can do now days compared to years gone by. They have to try to defend most things by angling an attacking player away with their body shape, it’s a hell of a lot more running for a defender compared to actually setting yourself and making the full blooded tackle. Would you rather chase Sterling all day or put a tackle on him?.......I think that’s what it comes down to.

I think the in finest days of the Arsenal invincibles and Manchester United those attacks were every bit as fast as we see today, I’d say physically they ran at teams more and moved the ball less so in that sense they were putting in more of a shift that maybe you see now days ? Teams couldn’t deal with Thiery Henry in his prime then and they wouldn’t be able to deal with him now....no question about it. Same for Giggs or Rooney, they absolutely terrorised people when they ran at them. I’d say they have more time on the ball now because defenders will tend to stand off rat

Today’s game is faster than it’s ever been and the likes of Ronaldo and Ibrahimovich have raised the bar massively in terms of conditioning and how you can keep in 1st class shape well into your late 30s......and I agree that the ball moves quicker but I would also add that is because it can ! I would say rule changes have facilitated lightweight sprinters that wouldn’t have survived 6 games in the days the lads you mention were playing. Sherringham, Bergkamp etc may have been “slower” in terms of pace but they were also getting hit with 6 tackles a game that would be red card o

I don’t think you can drop Bergkamp into that list, I don’t think he was slow at all.....I think he had so much ability that it just looked like he had more time than he actually did (if that makes sense) The perfect example is my favourite goal ever against Argentina, for anybody else in the world that ball is travelling too fast at a bad angle and go’s for a goal kick, but not for Bergkamp. Controlled, beat defender and far top corner with the outside of the boot all in a split second......
