Some great reading on Salmon Fishing/Awards at Shanes Castle/ Birr Castle/ European Hunters Day/ Arts and Antiques/ Game finding/shooting/Retrieving/Shoots/Trout Fishing in Ireland, and also many more Country Sports related interesting stories. Well worth a read to all Country Sportsmen and women around this great island of ours, and only costs £3.00. There are 7 pages of Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet coverage of shows North and South of the border accomp
  3. I believe the first bedlingtons were bred up in the town bedlington, from a cross with a then hard working french water dog, the Poodle which I guess was for hunting otters and other water game back in the day, here in England they added whippet blood to other breeds for foxing and rabbiting, like the Old English Black & tan terrier x whippet which gave us the Manchester Terrier a very hard dog which could take game twice its size, today the Manie lurchers have more leg around 21"than show dogs of only 16". Very interesting, thank you
  4. Think you are right there. Seen that somewhere in my research, that Greyhounds were crossed with small terriers, (including possibly the Bedlington Terrier), to produce a small, swift hound capable of hunting rabbits and other small game.

  6. The lurcher is a type of dog originating in Ireland and parts of Great Britain. While not a pure breed, it is generally a cross between a sighthound and any other breed, depending on the qualities desired by the breeder. Collie crosses are popular, given the working instinct of a sheepdog when mated with a sighthound, gives a dog of great intelligence plus speed good results for the huntsman. Lurchers, given their breeding to purpose, can be as small as a Whippet or as large as a deerhound, but most are of a size similar to that of the greyhound. The coat type will again be variabl
  7. The Whippet, an English Greyhound in miniature, is the fastest domesticated animal of his weight, capable of speeds up to 35m.p.h. There are several different theories about the Whippet’s ancestry. Some historians believe that the Whippet resulted from breeding runt Greyhounds repeatedly down in size, while others think that Whippets came from crossing Greyhounds with smaller Spaniels. Another theory is that the Whippet descends from crosses between Italian Greyhounds and various terrier breeds, particularly the Manchester Terrier. The Whippet arrived in England in the 19th century and ori

  14. Mourne Race Day Saturday 3rd November 12 Saturday 3rd of November 2012 was Mourne Race Day, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care. I jumped out of bed bleary eyed, opened the blinds, and to my horror, it was pitch black outside. My mind was still fixated in the zone of beautiful summer mornings, when I would awaken to the sound of the dawn chorus outside my window and the daylight and sun beaming in through the pane. Yes, it was time to load up the dogs in the trailer, and set out on our journey to the beautiful Mourne countryside, and the Mourne Race Day. We stopped off at “Gilberry Fayr

  19. Ideally situated in the shadows of the famous green Glens of Antrim, and deep in the heart of the Irish Countryside, lies the townland of Dunsilly, Co Antrim. This was the perfect setting for the last “ Sporting Whippet Club NI “ show of the year Sunday past 16th September. The venue for the show as usual, was at Dunsilly Kennels and what a day that was. As Dunsilly kennels is situated of the M2/M22 at junction 1, this is a superb venue and easily accessible to the motorway. There was a reasonably big crowd there, and with the exception of a few showers, the weather was on our si
