What cleaning rod for the .17HMR?
dadioles replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Some of us are rather anti- bore snake. Frankly I think they are a liability but I really don't have the energy to go into all the why's and wherefore's again...... -
In case it helps anyone else... One justification for having 2 x .22 rifles which is accepted by the police is that one is fitted with a day scope and the other with dedicated night vision.

Just get a kit from Rimfire Magic, it only costs a few pounds as there is not much in it. You will probably find that all you need to use is the middle spring. Easy to fit with clear instructions.

What cleaning rod for the .17HMR?
dadioles replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Good quality single piece, coated, made by Dewey - will last you a lifetime. You also need small patches specifically for the .17 and a cleaning jag (pointy bit). And most importantly a bore guide!!!! specific to your make of gun. If you are looking at the Bisley 3 piece kit it is horrible and I would not let it anywhere near my gun. You get what you pay for - quality does not come cheap but it lasts and is a pleasure to use and will not mess up your gun. -
SGC granted! (to my surprise)...
dadioles replied to PlasticJock's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Nice one... and good luck. Without wishing to sound like a dad (ok, I will sound like a dad!) it sounds as though you have grown up a bit and I just hope that you can get on and enjoy life a bit more now and without too much alcohol as that can be a real problem. It sounds as though the feo has some faith in you. Enjoy your shooting and, again, good luck. It can be pretty damn tough sometimes. -
First Time FAC - Advise me please.

Unless you can prove to the satisfaction of your local police force that you have (precise wording) "Good Reason" to own a particular firearm, you will be wasting your time. Download a copy of "Firearms Law Guidance to the Police 2002" which is available on the net as a pdf file (Google search) and read chapter 13 which deals with the whole definition of "good reason". The rest of the document makes very interesting reading as well. -
zero'ing my sights for rabbiting
dadioles replied to Beano1456's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I forgot to mention.... Try zeroing at about 30 yards, everyone has their favourite distance though. As far as shooting either up hill (up into a tree) or downhill is concerned, the pellet will always strike slightly high (compared to your zero on level ground) and it does not matter if it is uphill or downhill, in both cases it strikes slightly high (so you need to aim low). Not an issue until you point up (or down) more than about 35 degrees or so. -
zero'ing my sights for rabbiting
dadioles replied to Beano1456's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Normally you would adjust the focus at the eye piece to get the cross hairs in focus. It is there to adjust for people with different eye sight. It is not intended to get the target into focus. My guess is that the scope could well be pre-focused at 100 yards which is pretty typical. It might not be really suited to an air rifle where you are more likely shooting as close as 20 yards or so. The greater the magnification, the bigger the problem. Ideally you could do with a scope that is designed to work at quite close range and can focus properly down to about 10 yards. The a -
I don't think the police are too bothered about sound moderators just as long as if you want to use a sound moderator on a rifle, that rifle is conditioned for a moderator. I have quite a collection of moderators, far more than my licence has listed, but they are for use "on my air rifle" so the whole argument about FAC just does not apply. Moderators listed on my licence are shown as "Makers Name - Unknown" with no serial number. No specific moderator is listed for any specific rifle. To me, that seems eminently sensible. Obviously it would make more sense for moderators to be c

Looking for advice for .22 ammo
dadioles replied to shotgunny's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Ric is spot on there. 200 apiece might be a bit expensive, boxes of 50 will do. Put a few of each through the gun just to "wear it in" and get used to it, so you don't use up the whole of one batch. Then print yourself off some targets and spend time seeing what shoots best. 50 yards is quite a good distance to use for this as it is far enough to widen your groups out a bit. Personally I would only use subsonic ammo (subs). You might find that some makes chamber quite tightly but they should all "fit" in theory (I cannot use Ely or CCI, too tight). What you want is the make th -
I would lay odds that half the trouble with this and other similar posts is that one man's 100 yards is another man's 75 yards. Maybe ricky has short legs and measures out 100 paces which with a laser measure would come out rather less in real yards. All too often people claim shots at distances that are perceived rather than scientifically accurate, therefore meaningless. We all now how estimating distances at night is almost impossible, hard enough during the day! In my view if you are shooting live quarry you should be pretty much certain of a clean kill and with .22LR typically z

I am with Hunter Zero on this one. The stumbling block is the definition of "occupier". It is because of that grey area that my son now has his own firearms certificate, it takes away that element of legal doubt which arose when I took him out shooting (rabbits) with me. There was also the issue of "payment". I was shooting land with "permission" and allowed to keep any rabbits that I shot, therefore, technically, that changed things slightly as I was being paid by the landowner, arguably in his employ. That puts me in a slightly different category than if I was shooting clays or targets.

You sound a bit emotive, angry even... well a bit disgruntled anyway... (smile). Having read your post I went back and read all the others in this thread and almost without exception they were all saying how good the CZ is and that it is an excellent choice. With all posts they have to be taken with a bit of a pinch of salt as we don't know how credible the writer is. I get the impression that some posters are fantasists and probably don't actually own or use any of the guns they are so "expert" in and their views are some times difficult to weed out. In my own case I do own and use every

I have a CZ and an Anschutz. They both shoot pretty much the same as far as accuracy is concerned. The Anschutz is better build quality. The barrel was evenly free floating "out of the box" and I have not altered the trigger. Take the metalwork out of the stock and you can see how the Anchutz is a better more finely machined fit, almost "bedded". The CZ benefits enormously from a simple trigger kit which seems an intimidating thing to fit if you are a novice (me at the time!) but after plucking up the courage to do it, it really is quick and simple to do with very clear instructions, anyon

Shooting dogs worrying sheep
dadioles replied to halloween man's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The law governing shooting of dogs etc is a national law as are the guidelines that the police use to look into criminal reports. Please don't get confused with what I am trying to explain. The point I am making is that pulling a trigger whilst aimed at a dog COULD be an absolute minefield and to be under the impression that you have the full protection of the law, whatever the situation, is simply not the case. If you are aware of the full ins and outs of what has happened, what could happen and what the outcome could be will allow the average person to make an informed decision and -
Shooting dogs worrying sheep
dadioles replied to halloween man's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
To Dogmagic once more... Ignoring your insults ("pricks such as yourself"), you clearly stated that if someone shot your dogs you think reasonable retaliation would be to burn down their house killing all of its occupants including their children. You also love your dogs "as if they were kids", well, keep them away from sheep and if you have children, bring them up to be respectful, well educated and tolerant of others. I had a couple of labradors and was sufficiently deeply upset when one of them in particular had to be put down that I have resisted having another dog since, but t -
Well done, delighted to hear the good news. Hopefully you are grouping 5 shots less than 1" at 50 yards, if not, try a different brand of ammunition. My guess is that with subsonic rounds you are pretty much on target from about 25 to 55 yards but the bullet will start to drop quite a bit after that. Set up a target every 10 yards from 60 yards to 100 yards and take 5 shots on each aiming at the centre. That will give you the drop at different distances and accurately extend your range. Then you can decide either to use holdover or scope clicks to correct for distance. Enjoy your shooting.

Shooting dogs worrying sheep

Dear DogMagic I hope you enjoy what could become a life prison sentence after taking your revenge on a family for your own irresponsible actions. It seems from reading your post that you would be wise to have a word with your GP and see if an anger management course can be arranged as threatening to murder an entire family by arson is not the sort of thing that a rational person would do. The annoying thing is that as a tax payer I will be providing you with food and accomodation during your lengthy period of imprisonment. The only consolation is that you would be unable to breed d -
Matt is absolutely right on every point and don't forget that your gun dealer wants to make a sale. USA is not UK. You clearly have a desire to own a firearm but it is not justified for the task you have in mind, therefore you should be refused. A sub 12ftlb air rifle is the perfect weapon for ratting either indoors or outdoors and a good quality rifle will easily take out rats to 30 or 40 yards. A more appropriate reason to own a rimfire would be rabbit control. I don't know what sort of air rifle you are using at the moment, maybe it makes more sense to upgrade that. Have you ever tried

Oh dear, please don't start that old HMR v .22 "safer option" (bollocks utter nonsense) debate again. They are both as safe or as dangerous as you want them to be and if the police are taking the attitude that HMR is safer than .22 they need re-educating. One of the major deciding factors between the two is noise. .22 can be as quiet as an air rifle, HMR will always make a loud crack. They each have their place. Just read the threads..... Given a choice - I would rather be shot with a .22 Dadioles please read my post again. I didn't say whether one was safer than the other , it is p

Shortening choked rifle barel
dadioles replied to halamrose's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
16" is a great length and it will take an "over the barrel" moderator such as DM80 "off the shelf" without too much increase in length. If you are going to use a moderator such as SAK which screws onto the end, have the barrel cut to 14" or whichever length gives you about 1" clear beyond the end of the stock. Chewing up the inside of a moderator is not really an issue with .22 subs. It does become more of a problem with HMR. Accuracy is not affected by barrel length, certainly not in this case. In practical terms any change in muzzle velocity will not be noticeable. Obviously you have to -

I have not noticed any problems with the Hornady 17 GR Max and have put about 1500 (various batch numbers) through my Anschutz. My son wanted me to keep empty shell cases for an art project so I have just looked through a few hundred used empty shell cases and none of them are split after being fired either. Les

It is quite simple really. In every case you need the permission of the landowner (obviously) and you will be foolish not to have that in writing. The licence terms "open" and "closed" don't actually exist but that is how we describe two particular licence conditions, they have to be called something. All licences are restrictive in some way, they all contain "conditions". With an "open" licence the shooter can decide if the land on which he wants to shoot is suitable for a particular calibre - he can "clear" his own land. As long as he has the landowners permission to shoot th

It can be really hard to get your bearings at night and I used to find it really difficult sometimes to find some rabbits. I bought half a dozen flashing red LED rear cycle lamps, they were about £4 each and the batteries last for months. Just set one flashing and drop / throw the light so it lands near the dead rabbit. Makes locating them in the dark later a doddle. Another thing I made up is a 5ft long piece of 2cm dia plastic pipe (conduit) with a length of electrical flex running through it ending in a loop, like a dog catcher. Easy to push into the bushes or down a hole to hook around
