manuals for almost every firearm
dadioles replied to patdahat's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
***CAUTION*** I could be completely wrong but when I tried a google search for this web site my computer seemed to think that it was downloading a virus. Perhaps be a bit careful until someone has verified the validity of this site. Les UPDATE.... I think I have sorted it. Maybe there is a rogue web site. A good link to the manuals is http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm That link seems safe. Les -
1. It is not illegal to shoot a fox with .22 but the wording of your firearms licence may be such that for the holder of that licence it is illegal. Most police forces either exclude, or will not include, the shooting of fox using .22 and you must conform to the terms of your licence. As I said though, it is not illegal and many foxes are satisfactorily and legally shot using .22 every year. A centrefire calibre is the preferred option for fox. 2. It is absolutely illegal to shoot roe deer with .22. The only circumstances when it may, possibly be accepted is the humane dispatch of an injured

see next post... something went wrong with this one!

RF or LR It is better to put .22rf which is "rimfire" as .22LR is a specific bullet size (long rifle). Theoretically .22rf gives you a wider choice .22 short, .22wrf, .22wmr etc. but in practice you will buy .22LR so it all becomes a bit academic. Try and keep things as "broad" as possible in the paperwork. Expect to be able to "hold" 600 rounds and "purchase" 500 rounds. It does not hurt to try your luck and double those numbers. When you purchase a moderator have it entered as "no serial" and "make unknown", again it keeps things flexible. Buy a gun with a short barrel (14" or 16") as it i

I agree with you (padgeman) that Chairgun Pro is an excellent piece of software. It does have to be used with caution though because theoretical values and real world shooting don't always see eye to eye and you will almost certainly have to "tweak" some of the settings in Chairgun to the "wrong" values in order to get the "right" result based on actual shooting. At the very least, having zeroed at 55 yards you need to shoot a group at 100 yards and measure the drop then compare that with Chairgun, the chances are it will be significantly out. Better still measure the drop every 10 yards

Scopes are dry nitrogen filled when new but over time the o'rings perish a bit and moisture gets in. As matt and tom suggest, you need to let it warm up and dry out. The biggest problem I get on a cold night is my breath fogging up the scope and my glasses.

I am not too sure why you mention FAC air rifles. That is about the last thing you should consider. They really do not have a lot going for them outside a narrow area of specialist use. A 1 inch spread at 30 yards is pretty good, you are doing well. I use a .177 Theoben Rapid PCP which makes life easier and would expect all my pellets to fall inside 0.5cm but please do not take that as criticism. If you have not already done so, try some different pellets, domed heads but light as well as heavy, Bisley Magnum and Daystate FT Heavy (both heavy) workes well for me but every gun is different. P

Hello Oakster I cannot help you with shotguns but it seems that your choice of firearm is really obvious - .22LR with moderator using subsonic ammo. That gives you headshot rabbits out to about 100 yards or a little more (120+) with practice and not much more noise than an air rifle. The ammunition is not expensive so you will be able to put a couple of hundred shots through practising on targets to learn how the bullet falls over distance. Add a reasonable quality scope with side focus and up to about 16x magnification. When rabbit shooting with an air rifle I tend to settle into a ni

As nod said, just go and buy a SAK, about the cheapest and pretty much as effective as anything on a .22. As long as you are over 18 you can buy it over the counter without any problems and simply say it is for an air gun if asked, nobody really cares. Another bit of stupid legislation. Forget about proofing, a complete nonsense for rimfire.

If the photo attachment has worked... My CZ .22LR is zeroed at 50 yards and the image shows a 2" dia target at exactly 100 yards. Aiming at the bull, the bottom 5 shot group show the drop with no scope adjustment, shame about the flier. I then adjusted the scope 24 clicks which in effect re-zeroed for 100 yards. I prefer scope adjustment (clicks) to holdover and have worked out the adjustment needed at 10 yard intervals. There was slight wind and shots were taken prone using a bipod. Ammunition Lapua SK subs. Broadly a 6" drop and you can watch the shot through the scope as it loops down

I quite agree, use the right tool for the job and the appropriate tool will vary with range. If you cannot kill something humanely, don't take the shot. In my own case my certificate states - Additional conditions: (.17 HMR and .22LR) "...used for shooting vermin and ground game..." "use only in connection with the shooting of vermin or, in connection with the management of any estate, other wildlife." I read that as meaning ok for opportunistic fox but of course NOT deer or anything else covered by other legislation.

Thank you everyone for the tips. I had not realised that you could have a "free" variation if it is simply a swap, like for like. Now I know what the possible answers are, I know what questions to ask. (so often the way). A quick search on google came up with this (from Durham) which makes it clear. I have copied it here in case it helps anyone else. ******* Variation of a Firearm Certificate Once a firearm certificate has been granted, variations as to the firearms and ammunition currently authorised may, on the application of the holder, be made by the Chief Officer of Police

The difficult bit is accurately estimating the distance. I use a Nikon laser rangefinder which is brilliant but if a rabbit is in the middle of a flat featureless field the rabbit is too small to hold the rangefinder still and get a good reading and you can't get a reading off the grass at a low angle. It is ok if the rabbit is next to a tree or bush as you can use that. There really is no substutute for knowing your land and working out distances in advance, even laying down a few markers. At the local golf course I cut some foot long lengths of white platic drain pipe and pushed them into t

In defence of the Anschutz, it is quite easy to accidentally knock the bolt upwards very slightly so that when you pull the trigger it does not fire - the firing pin is not let go by the trigger. Raising and lowering the bolt, while keeping it pushed forward, re-sets the firing pin (does not eject the round) and it fires as normal. It is as much a shooter familiarity problem as anything, a "feature" (smile). Better for it not to go bang than go bang with the bolt not perfectly home. Irritating never the less. The failure to fire in that instance has nothing to do with the bullet. The

Out of interest why did you choose HMR and section 1 air gun rather than a quiet and cheap to feed .22LR which, on the face of it, seems appropriate, although some forces (quite wrongly in my view) seem to favour the HMR on the questionable grounds that it is less likely to ricochet. Did your FLO make any suggestions along those lines or just veto your application based on the land area. Another scenario is that she does not think you are suitable and is using land area as an excuse. It certainly sounds a bit unreasonable, if not unprofessional. Do let us know how you get on and as others

In the short term (couple of days) what the police don't know they don't need to know. Presumably the keys are secure and you are comfortable about the mental state of the wife. Beyond that I think you will find the police both reasonable and understanding as although this unfortunate state of affairs is new to you it is all too common to the police. Of course report back here if you feel they behave unreasonably (or kindly for that matter). At a guess, and it is only a guess, the police may find it acceptable for you (you will be known to them) to take the arms and ammunition, certainly wi

.22lr Rimfire moderator - which to use?
dadioles replied to padgeman's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I use a SAK and DM80 on .22LR The DM80 is wonderful build quality and much more expensive but in all honesty most moderators will do a very similar job on the subsonic .22LR I am surprised that you have commented on the noise and cannot help wondering if your subs may be running a bit close to supersonic. Try a SAK, they are about as cheap as it gets and do a very good job. They are not so good on HMR thought, a dedicated 17 DM80 is much better for HMR. Perhaps try a different subsonic round that may fly a little slower but still groups well. Les -
Trespass,poaching,Sight seeing, ok! ?
dadioles replied to TWOTWOTHREE's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
This thread has gone on for quite a while and brought out the best and worst in people. It has nothing to do with wealth or class. It does not matter where you live, what you drive or what you wear. It is about attitude. I know poor working class people and wealthy working class people, some are wonderful and some are right nasty scrounging bas''rds (rich are worse). Exactly the same can be said for the middle classes (I don't know any landed gentry) who can be snooty and stuck up "the new rich" or as helpful and down to earth as anyone else. Accents don't help either. Jolly posh old cha -
Shotgun Licince, How can I get rid of it?
dadioles replied to North Wales Hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hang on to the licence. You gain nothing by giving it up and it may even help you with a future job application to mention it on your cv. Who can tell what is around the corner. Sell your gun because that gets rid of the responsibility of ownership. When your licence comes up for renewal that is the time to consider your position, not now. Be a "glass is half full" person, not a "glass is half empty" one. Good luck..... -
Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
dadioles replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You are broadly correct there matt but a bit misleading. You may be inconvenienced but there are no "penalties". There is no legal requirement for you to carry your certificate with you but it would be a common sense thing to do. If you do not have your certificate with you then you cannot prove the legality of your position and will probably have your guns confiscated, and be arrested, until you can come up with the certificate or the firearms dept vouches for you. You have not, however, commited an offence. I take a photocopy with me and keep the original in a safe place as I do not wa -
Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
dadioles replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i have the same on some occasions,im a sgc holder not got firearms so what would happen if stopped and the police found some 22 and 222 rounds in my truck. I got 3 mnths for nineteen . 22 bullets, charged with possession of a firearm what was the story on this? so if im taking a mate out lamping with a calibre that i dont have and he accidently drops one in the footwell and i find it the next day and get pulled is it a instant 3 months or would the courts take into account that you are a shooter yourself and it just happened. intresting thread Logically, and sadly logi -
Just wondered... What do you do with the rabbits? They look as though they were all shot in the body so the meat won't be any good for human consumption.

Spot on Sako - for someone "who is useless with the written word" I reckon you have done pretty damned good - big smile. I try and keep the chip on my shoulder under control. My wife is a nurse with more than 35 years experience and (she will not be reading this) quite frankly the job has really screwed her up emotionally. It is a form of post traumatic stress. Can you imagine what it would be like to have a road accident victim brought into A&E and lift their head only to find that your fingers are squishing into their brain because the back of their head is missing and then have to -
There was a fair bit of discussion about this and decided that it does not need to be proofed. Just have it cut down and threaded. If your gunsmith wants it proofed it either means that he does not know the law or makes a few extra bob. 14" to 16" is a good length for .22 / HMR anything longer is a waste of space.
