It is a rather daft situation but the moderator needs to be listed on your certificate. You cannot buy a moderator for your .22lr without it being on your licence as the same rules apply to the moderator as to your rifle, it is, in effect classed as a firearm in its own right. So what you do is tell the guy in the shop that it is for your air rifle. Now you can purchase that identical moderator without any restriction whatsoever. Using it on your .22 would probably still be illegal but isn't it a crazy situation. If for example you see a good deal for a moderator in a shop but don't have y

A little help for a firearm newbi

7.5" John The drop is going to vary from gun to gun and make of bullet. You can only use published trajectory figures as a rough guide and MUST work out your own. Every rifle owner really should know how their gun behaves at the distances they intend to shoot, certainly in the case of smaller calibres where you can conveniently and cheaply put a few dozen rounds through I would say it is irresponsible not to and an excuse for a bit of plinking at targets. Just as important but not so easy to do with larger calibres (I do not have experience of these). For the .22 as an exam -

Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
dadioles replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i have the same on some occasions,im a sgc holder not got firearms so what would happen if stopped and the police found some 22 and 222 rounds in my truck. I got 3 mnths for nineteen . 22 bullets, charged with possession of a firearm Well there you go.... As has been said in this thread several times. The law for shotguns and shotgun ammunition is not the same as for firearms and firearm ammunition, firearms offences are taken much more seriously. If you have a shotgun licence or a firearms licence or even a driving licence.... It is YOUR responsibility to know the law and -
A little help for a firearm newbi
dadioles replied to rossy08's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I use both .22LR and .17HMR for rabbits during the day and have another .22LR with dedicated night vision. At night I would never use the HMR as I want to be as quiet as possible, often shooting in the early hours. My Gen2+ night vision only has a magnification of x5 and a rabbits head makes a pretty small target at night even at 50 yards so the .22LR zeroed at 50 yards with an effectively flat trajectory +- 0.4 inch is good from 15 to 55 yards without any holdover and shoots about an inch low at 65 yards, beyond that head shots are getting too difficult at night. During the day the .22L -

Sorry Scarecrow you are wrong. Where on earth did you dig up that information. There is so much misinformation put about that it can take on an air of truth. Always go back to source. Even the police often get it wrong. A bit of digging around on the internet and you can download copies of documents such as: "Firearms Law - Guidance to the Police" "Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988" "Firearms Security Handbook" BASC have loads of interesting leaflets - "BASC - Police Cautions" is worth a read! Search and ye shall find... -
Do you need land when applying for a FAC
dadioles replied to Stuart1985's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Wrong. The firearms act specifically states that you should have "good reason" to hold. It goes on to state that "good reason should not be equated with need". I don't "need" the .22 that I use for controlling ground vermin and the like, but those reasons are "reasonable cause to hold" It's a narrow distinction, but there nonetheless! The act does say that "reasonable cause" should not be equated with desire either, so "I want one" is not reasonable cause. Quite right Matt, I was not precise enough in my choice of words. The point I was trying to get across was that fo -
If there were to be an accident the issue of whether or not the gun had been proved since cut down or threaded would only be of significance if the accident was caused by or directly related to the modification that had been carried out and furthermore shown to have unduly weakened the barrel. The barrel could explode and split if, for example, a second round was chambered and fired while the previous round was still jammed in the barrel after a misfire or perhaps a wrongly aligned or misfitted moderator was preventing the passage of the bullet but to be prosecuted you will have to be shown t

Do you need land when applying for a FAC
dadioles replied to Stuart1985's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
To get a FAC you have to prove to the police that you actually need it. Not like a shotgun certificate where they would have to show why you should not have it. Vermin control (rabbits) is one justification for having an FAC. It is a bit chicken and egg and unfortunately it comes down to knowing the right people, a friendly farmer who will let you shoot his land. If a landowner asks you to control his rabbits, and gives you that in writing - a "permission" or "land authority" - that is good enough to get you started. It does not have to be a big piece of land, or more than one permission. F -
Can you get british standard ones?
dadioles replied to JoeD's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not a chance unless its for an air rifle or antique. No FEO would allow it. -
You are very sensible to wait until you have a definitive reply from the police. Never rely on hearsay, it is just not worth it. If it all went pear shaped you could be guilty of armed trespass and find that the farmer just cannot remember ever saying that you could shoot on his land! That lady in the firearms dept seems a bit out of order though. In Cambridgeshire all it takes is a quick phone call and they are really helpful. I always posted them a copy of the permission (make sure you ALWAYS get the written permission of the landowner) so that my records could be updated at police hq. Fort

Your local FEO is a shotgun man, very helpful and friendly. They are not the enemy! you will be fine. As well as The Country Store at Sawston pop in to The Barn Shop outside Bassingbourn, cheaper and friendly. Cambs police are a good bunch, any queries just give them a ring, the only snag is they are slow with post and only use 2nd class to save money, a bit frustrating as that can drag things out a bit but Cambs are still quicker than many forces.

I get quite confused by Hornady ammo and tip colour. The ammo which I find suits my Anschutz best is the Hornady red tip 17gr V-max. But.... A while ago there was the same ammo supplied at a lower price with blue tips and my dealer told me that the stuff with blue tips was identical to the red tip (and this proved true when I shot with it) but it was being sold cheaper because they had made it with blue polymer "by mistake", or had run out of red or da di dah.... The latest batch of red tip that I have just bought has a slightly muddy red colour rather than clean bright red and again they

I cannot help wondering if those people who suggest that fitting a moderator to a .17HMR makes very little difference have ever used an HMR? A moderator makes a huge difference. Without a moderator there is a loud boom sufficient to make your ears ring and require ear protection. With a moderator the boom is hugely reduced and no ear protection is really necessary. It is also much more neighbour friendly although arguably a little less exciting! There is nothing you can do about the sonic crack as the bullet passes through the sound barrier as that happens after it has left the barrel. I

Instead of practicing on rabbits why are you not shooting targets. With a .17HMR you should easily be grouping half inch at 50 yards and off a bipod headshots on rabbits are no problem out to 100 yards with a bit of practice. Tell us what your rifle is, what is your ammo and exactly what is the scope you are using at what magnification. So far all you have told us is that you are a lousy shot who doesn't know what he is doing and just wants to kill things. Not good. Really not good. So lets start again shall we....... People here really want to help you. I took a complete beg

I'm guessing they/you meant vermin. They might be classed as Vermin (but their status as Deer takes priority) but they are definitely not rodents. Hi Colster No, he really did mean rodent. Something to do with teeth which meant they were more like rats than deer. It just shows how misinformation gets spread around. There are reports of escaped Capybara, and that is a rodent, being seen in the wild and they are a similar size to muntjac, although a different species. I wonder how our firearms legislation would deal with shooting a capybara? (smile). Les

Put a Deposit down on my first Rifle Today

I second everything Ace says about the .22LR although I love my HMR as well as it takes over from where the 22 leaves off and gets me out to 150 yards or so but is very noisy and expensive to feed. When you get your gun, buy a box each of whatever ammunition your local dealer has in stock, don't worry at first about zeroing accurately just set up a target at 50 yards or so and as long as your shots are within two or three inches of the centre of a sheet of A4 paper that is good enough. Now, see what groups the different lots of ammo give you. You are trying to find the one that gives the -
It would take some fairly clumsy action to bend a barrel in such a way that you cannot see the damage. The force would probably be at the breech. Does the barrel look straight when you look through the barrel? A barrel is pretty stiff and very strong. Removing a moderator would be a rotational force, it would not bend the barrel. To bend a barrel you would have to apply force bending it over your knee. It is worth removing moderators frequently to stop them becoming bonded on as the result of heat and corrosive gases. The implication is that the scope mounting rail on top of the barre

Many thanks for giving me such good and well thought out advice, I am very grateful. You have the experience, I do not. It is just nice to store the info away somewhere in my brain because you never know what might pop up when out shooting. I asked about Muntjac because there are quite a few around here and they are something of a nuisance. Someone told me they were classed as rodents and not deer. That is wrong of course. I now know that, unlike all other deer species, there is no closed season for muntjac. No deer, including muntjac, can be shot with anything less than .22 50grain 1000

This business of knowing what we can and cannot shoot is another example of "the powers that be" failing to make things easier for us. So much is "grey" or untested in law. You would think that there would be a simple and comprehensive guide issued free with every license, worded the same for everyone irrespective of which police authority they live in. Common wording for licenses and common standards across UK, no, the various police forces enjoy their discretionary powers too much. It does take quite a bit of searching around to dig out information. Bottom line is that if you don't -
I know this has come up before, but here is a different flavour... Having just been pursuaded that shooting foxes on a golf course is a good idea I am just wondering what I should do if I come across one while out shooting rabbits, not equipped for foxes. What about small deer such as muntjak? I will either have a 22LR or .17HMR with me and would not, under any circumstances, consider anything further than about 50 yards. I am certainly not desperate to shoot one. First question - Is it legal? My certificate (exact wording) says: ".... used for shooting vermin and ground game

First foxes on golf course
dadioles replied to hw100sniper's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Rather like RikW I too was wondering about the point of shooting foxes on a golf course, no chickens or game birds to protect. I have not seen one yet on the course where I shoot and had pretty much decided not to shoot one if I had the opportunity as it seemed daft to shoot a predator of rabbits. Now, having read this thread, I get the point. It is pretty obvious, when you think about it, that they are a nuisance on the golf course in their own right. Fox poo is about the nastiest smelliest stuff around and they can scratch around and empty bins. Thanks for putting me right on that -
As others have said..... buy a box each of whatever you can get locally and plink away methodically at some paper targets 100 yards away. You will almost certainly find that some makes will load more easily than others and some will give tighter groups. You should be able to land them all within a 1" group at that range off a bipod. It is surprising how the same batch of ammo can work differently in two apparently identical guns. You may find that cheap ammo is better than the more expensive, it is whatever suits your gun. The .17 HMR ammo is more consistent and reliable than 22LR for ex

i have the same on some occasions,im a sgc holder not got firearms so what would happen if stopped and the police found some 22 and 222 rounds in my truck. Given that Firearms are a quite different category to Shotguns I expect that there would be some rather more serious explaining to do. Assuming you own up to the identity of the idiots who were stupid enough to leave live rounds lying around in clear breach of their license they may find their licenses revoked. Les -
I use the Anschutz .17HMR with a 14" barrel and SAK moderator. Really easy to handle and as accurate as anything else. Short barrel is a good choice. Group sizes always less than a 2p coin at 100 yards (my zero) and not that much bigger at 180 yards despite the 6" drop. Widens at 200 yards at which it is a 10" drop. Hornady V-max 17g comes out of the barrel at 2419 fps. Slightly slower than manufacturers spec. (Measured with Chrony 12" from end of moderator). Les
