Moderator removal and Rezeroing
dadioles replied to gareth08's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I never shoot .22 or hmr without a moderator. What is the point? The less noise the better, if only for the sake of your own hearing. A moderator should not reduce the bullets velocity but it will affect the poi slightly simply because the weight of a mod pulls the barrel down. It is, of course, essential that the moderator, barrel crown and thread, should all be in perfect condition as any issues here will affect accuracy. If you have a floating barrel, make sure it floats! Taking off and re-fitting a moderator will not affect the zero on a well maintained rifle. I don't wa -
Hello Geoff.223, your statement "i know im not supposed to be shooting within 50ft of a road" is not actually true although often quoted. Certainly as far as England is concerned this is not an issue. As AirgunGuy stated "You would however have to be on private property and have permission to be there.... your pellet cannot leave the boundary of the permission" and obviously you must not "injure, interrupt or endanger" anyone. Just be sensible. If your factory is in the middle of a housing estate with lots of onlookers you would be a fool to take on this task. On the other hand

As others have said, there are moderators available that can readily be used on rimfire as well as air rifle although when asked what it is for you must say air rifle. SAK is a classic, cheap and effective example. The only possible complication is if you have a specifically named make of moderator on your ticket. If your ticket states blah blah hmr and "wildcat moderator" you are unlucky and really must replace like with like or get a variation as in the unlikely event that you got caught, a jobsworth could cause you grief as you have not complied with the exact wording of your licence. I zero my hmr at 100 yards which gives me fairly flat shooting (within a pound coin) from 30 to 110 yards. It comes out an inch low at 125 yards (generally my limit). 2" low at 140 yards and 3" low at 150 by which time the bullet is dropping rapidly although still has a lot of energy. Get a copy of "Hawke Chairgun Pro" (free pc computer software) as that will give a clear indication (graph) of trajectory and help you choose an appropriate zero point for your personal setup.

I used to use SAK but now have DM80's on all of my rimfire's. The DM80 is not cheap but it is much better build quality than the SAK and with the overbarrel construction can shorten the overall length of the gun (and looks good - smile). In all honesty, for use on a .22 with subs, if money is tight stick to a SAK. It is all you need and having tried several moderators over the years I really do not think there is a huge difference between them in terms of sound moderation. The .17hmr is a different beast though. My Anschutz has a 14" barrel and the much higher energy of the round

At risk of being boring.... Am I missing something here? That sig522 may suit rambo types (dude) but surely for bunny bashing you need a .22 which is steady and accurate and capable of grouping better than an inch out to, say, 75 yards. Both of my .22's are CZ, bolt action with 5 shot mags and although I can see how a bigger mag could be useful, it would tend to get in the way. Even when shooting in areas infested with rabbits I have never felt that I need anything that will turn a rate of fire faster than I can operate the bolt. Keeping the mag topped up is easy and you could a

When I started out I was told to spend more on the scope than on the rifle. I ignored the advice as it seemed a bit daft. I was wrong. Now, a few years on.... I realise that the advice was good. In small calibre's (.22 .17) I shoot with Anschutz and CZ. The Anschutz is better build quality but in "real world" shooting there is nothing to choose between them. They will both shoot within a 1" circle at 100 yards if I do my bit, that is all you need. Most guns, with the right ammo combination and properly setup, will outshoot their user I have changed scopes though. Somethin

It will not have any effect on the rate of twist. Have it done. There is no practical advantage to having a longer barrel.

What do you keep your licences & permission slips
dadioles replied to halloween man's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Same again - I keep copies in my gun slips so they are always with me when out shooting. Originals stay at home in the gun safe. The police have enough info about me on record to keep checks simple. The only time I pre-warn the police of shooting activity (get an incident number) is when shooting (at night) in the local council owned wildlife park - a bit sensitive there. -
Practice on targets, find which make of subsonic ammo gives the tightest groups at, say, 75 yards. Then just buy and use that make only. Simple! Ignore any advice about specific brands. Every gun behaves differently. You have to work this one out for yourself.

I guess its all about range and how well (steady) you can hold a gun. Pretty much all of my shooting is of rabbits and I shoot "sniper style", slow and steady. With a bipod my groups might be, say, better than 1 inch. Off sticks I am less steady and it might open up to near double that. Hand held standing up without support I will not shoot anything further than 40 yards away (rabbit chest) as I just cannot hold still enough. With a bipod head shots at 70 yards using the .22 are the norm. I have several bipods ranging from cheap and cheerful chinese copies to Harris. My favourite is the

Best Binoculars - Quality Vs Price?
dadioles replied to TommyGun86's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I have read about these image stabilising binos, how do you find them? They are a fair price, are you paying for the glass, name or stabilization do you think? I do not find that I can hold anything with a magnification greater than 8x steady enough so that is the limit for normal binoculars. Finally I shelled out what felt like a huge amount of money for Image Stabilised Canon 12 x 36 binoculars and they are fantastic. Bright, sharp from edge to edge, wonderful. With a magnification of 12x I cannot really hold them still enough but just press the button and the image stabiliser kic -
As it is your first gun and your budget is not huge a .22LR would be an excellent choice and CZ is a widely respected make, sensibly priced and readily available. Personally I prefer to buy new. When you say that you would like to use it for rabbits and targets I have to assume that the primary role is hunting and target shooting is for practice. If you are into serious competitive target shooting then that requires a more refined approach. With a .22LR you are looking at shooting distances typically up to 100 yards so you will need a reasonable quality scope with magnification of up to, s

My magazine holds 4 but you could put one up the spout and technically have 5 shots available. Personally I find that perfectly adequate as the magazine sits fairly flush with the stock. I would find a larger magazine which sticks out a considerable distance annoying.

Opinions vary from "almost never" to "every time you use it". Personally I use a bore guide, rod and patches quite frequently, maybe every 100 rounds or whatever mood I am in. A lot of muck comes out of the moderator as well. It only takes me a couple of shots to settle it down again after a clean. Others will say that it can take them 20 or more shots to settle down, maybe their bores are slightly more pitted or possibly not totally clean or maybe just different.... My aim is to keep the barrel in "as new" condition, nicely polished inside as the result of pumping bullets throug

Am I the only one that finds the Fox Shooting Gallery rather unpleasant and voyeristic? Pictures of foxes with their insides hanging out or surrounded by dead or newly born cubs or with half of their head blown off rather turn my stomach rather than lead me into a period of rejoycing. I shoot an awful lot of animals every week but would not wish to post pictures of their bodies. Each to his own I suppose.....

Have PM'd you...

If you use it a lot the SAK will corrode badly inside when used on HMR. Fine for .22 though (which is what it was designed for). If you don't use it a lot the SAK is ok for HMR but the DM80 designed for .17 does reduce the muzzle blast better than the SAK and does not show the same signs of wear after long use.

I am a professional photographer and spend much of my time editing digital images. A few things to be aware of.... Oh and never change or overwrite your original image - think of it as your "negative", the master copy. You never know when you might need to go back to it. Get your head around the concept of - pixels / dots / resolution / image size - it is all the same thing (more or less) and really pretty important. To make a nice print (on paper) that looks like a proper photo where you cannot see the dots you need to print at about 300 dots per inch so a typical postcard size pr

Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
dadioles replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Exactly. Just be polite and have a chat. There is a chance that you may be unfortunate to be stopped by "a policeman with attitude" and in that circumstance it would be a good idea to have your original firearms license with you, or at least a copy as that will have your photo and licence number, hopefully you will also have some other I.D. such as a driving license (mine is a very well worn old type - no need to regularly renew it! another con to make money for the government). Even then, the policeman, who may never have seen one before, could be awkward and delay you even longer but as l -
Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
dadioles replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Spot on. In their defence, the police are expected to know an awful lot. As shooters we need to know how the law affects us, and in some detail! Along with photo copies of my certificate I also keep a few other useful documents in a folder in the car - Things like Home Office Guidance and BASC guide for police etc. -
Just work out the trajectory yourself by firing at targets 10,20,30,40,50 yards (accurate - not paced!!). It will not take you long and will teach you an awful lot about your gun. Hopefully you have already worked out which pellets group best in your gun, until you have done that you are wasting your time.

Any moderator will do a good job on a .22 An over barrel type such as DM80 (I have DM80 and SAK and others) has the benefit of being a bit shorter as it is over barrel Just get a SAK, it is cheap, relatively small and as good as anything for .22 As far as scopes are concerned no need to go higher than 16x but do get one with side focus.
-
short as you can get - 14" is good - no change in accuracy - no downside, just benefits. Consider an overbarrel mod although SAK is ok for .22 and is as quiet as any.

Forget the idea of hand holding an hmr and taking head shots on rabbits at 100 yards, it is damned hard hand held at 50! without solid support from a fence post or tree. Using a bipod it is "easy" and with practice you will be good for 150 yards although it does start to drop off rapidly at 120 and if there much wind that will cause you a problem. I was laying off 6" left at only yards yesterday with a moderate breeze from left to right. On my hmr I have a Nikon Monarch 8-32x50 with ED glass and as someone else has said, that highest magnification is ok for targets on a bright day but
