  1. Just one question when you shaved the Afghan did you find Osama?
  2. Different dogs for different folks nothing wrong with that. Your bull man will fix things with a hammer while the collie man will use a screwdriver, they both work but one has more finesse than the other. Nothing against the bull lads but I will stick to the collie cross. atb Dirtwinger
  3. well for me the reason that bull cross running dogs are so popular is that a lot of young silly boys just want out and out killing machines wich trueth be told there not all,a lot of responsible folk have them for good reason but too many silly boys are into them as well thus the huge popularity.now with a traditional type be that what it may for me any way is something thats clever vercitile loyal but harty and a dog to take most all at least all i can eat, good retreavers face cover and water do all manner of day and night work something that thinks well for its self.that why traditional cro
  4. I need some help here I have been trying to find a US outlet that sells the metal fitting for slipleads. I have had no luck and was wondering if anyone knew of a UK supplier of the hardware. I want to make a quick release type sliplead where you pull and the catch releases, any help appreciated. Thanks in advance Dirtwinger
  5. I borrow my mates dogs quite often in the season, but I bred two of his three dogs and he knows he can trust me. You have to be prepared to pay vet bills though, two of my dogs were lame and I took his out instead. Both of them got ripped on barbwire chasing a hare I had to get both stitched up. You have to have complete trust and know that things can happen if you do this. If all consequences are not understood you can ruin a friendship easily. atb Dirtwinger

  9. Hi Tony, she is looking good seems to be enjoying the open space. How's Mouse doing is she settling in yet?
  10. Finally got hold of my vet and got his ten cents worth. He treats rattlesnake bites the same as he would an adder bite. The main concern in his experience is infection as snakes mouths are loaded with bacteria. He puts the dog on anti inflamatories and antibiotics and they do fine. The real problems are when swelling obstructs the airways, with a leg bite this wont be a issue. atb Dirtwinger
  11. Had a similar thing happen to one of my dogs the day before I went to a big falconry meet in the US. Took him out he ran great caught two hares and went home. He walks into the kitchen and comes out 5 mins later with a 6' splinter impaled through his foot. Cleaned it out and he seemed fine so I took him to the meet. First day hunting he and the falcon are chasing a hare and he jacks, comes back to me with puss and blood coming out of the top and bottom of his foot. It abcessed and burst took a week to get him right. Screwed up my hunting for almost the whole meet, the falcon didnt want chase
  12. Wish I could give more specific advice, my only experience is with a rattlesnake bite on my Aussie/grey and it was only a drybite(no venom injected). A couple of friends have had rattlesnake bites on their dogs and severe swelling is the most obvious symptom, it can take a long time to go down a week to two weeks. A adder bite is far less severe than a rattler so I would imagine as long as the dog is not distressed she should be ok. I will ask my vet as he is a good dog vet and from Essex as well so he can give me a more informed opinion. atb Dirtwinger
  13. More info, breed, age, experience would help. Describe a typical run with her and what makes you think she isn't giving her all? atb Dirtwinger
  14. A racing bred whippet will be fastest on short bursts, what are you hunting as this will be an important factor in what cross to use. A whippet will be quick on the draw but outgunned by a Yote. Although my coursing buddy did tell me of a whippet his dad used on Yotes with staghound backup, it tripped them and messed with them until the stags showed up! In the Uk a good all round cross for bushing would be a whippet x collie or whippet x bull or cross of the two. atb Dirtwinger
  15. The last pic is a cracker, is that your Buckie bottle per chance No mate it's the dogs carry out There seems to be a theme developing here and who am I to say no. I prefer to start them young, it gives me a break from them knawing on my legs anyway. This girl can handle her beer unlike her brother! :alcoholic: atb Dirtwinger
  16. Welcome, where in the US are you? atb Dirtwinger
  17. hey Tony, look forward to meeting next week. I caught a few rabbits like that over the years in the UK, first iv'e seen in the US though. It's pretty rare to see I caught thousands of rabbits with ferrets hawks and lurchers and only saw 3or 4 in all that time. atb Dirtwinger
  18. Young dogs can take time to figure it out. I remember one season back in the UK, my mate had bull/grey and I had a collie/greyxsaluki. Both dogs would run a hare all over a field back and forth and never get hold of the hare. my mates patterdale killed four hares they were coursing before they got the hang of it. You just got to be patient some of the slowest developers turn into the best dogs. All the best Dirtwinger
  19. Only been shot the once and that was down in Kent in a snowstorm. Went out to get some wood from the stack by the hedge and a old fart about 90yrs old pepperd me with a 12 bore. He didnt see me and was aiming at a maggie in the hedge, he was very apologetic afterward. Luckily I was bundled up and the shot had to get through the hedge but it wrecked my jacket. Only two pellets came through into my skin but they stung pretty good. As to going out on your own I prefered it that way quieter and you saw more game, plus if you got sussed it was easy to slip away on your todd rather than with a herd
  20. You know you've been away from home too long when a stinging nettle story makes you homesick! Out here in the desert it's cactus and a small plant seed called a Goathead that causes me problems, Goatheads are evil spiny things that stick in the dogs pads and stop them in their tracks. Cactus can fill your dogs with large to tiny spines that really irratate the dog. But they are just not the same as the good old fashioned nettle for pissing you and the dogs off. All the best Dirtwinger
  21. The sire of my pups is terrified of pups and will do anything to get away from them as this pic illustrates. Once they grow up and turn into dogs he fine but puppies are his kryptonite. atb Dirtwinger
  22. I think I would want the heart of a cheetah rather than a lion, big lazy scavengers dontcha know! atb Dirtwinger
  23. Good one for the bull cross boys to check out I think. As a proven working pit bull traditionally means it has been fought and thats a very big no no! perhaps stuff like this would be a good way of testing a bull to find the ones with the most athletic ability and heart to add to a cross. At the veryleast it's nice to see pit's getting a oulet on life rather than be chained up as is the norm here. atb Dirtwinger
  24. Blacktailed jackrabbits mate Atb Dirtwinger
