  1. The blacktailed jackrabbit is a true hare similar to the brown hare, they are smaller however weighing between 5 and 7lb's with the odd 8lb specimen. They are desert adapted getting the vast majority of their water from cactus and other plants. When coursed they tend to be less inclined to jink and turn like a brown hare prefering speed over maneuverability but will turn when pressed hard. They also go down holes quite often when chased hard which can be frustrating. I have only rarely found them on agricultural land instead finding them in the open desert often in bushy areas, unlike the b
  2. The Tazi is very similar to the saluki although the kazak dogs are generally shorter and stockier than the middle eastern Saluki. From what I have seen they are not as fast as top class salukis but they can run all day and are extremely hardy This is Cisco the Tazi in the video As you can see Cisco is very relaxed around the bird. Skycat as to your question the jacks will go down holes if hard pressed, this has happened so many times to my old lurcher that when he kills a hare he automatically starts digging a hole. In his mind the end of a chase means a hole even if he has to make one
  3. 1 Very well observed! Particularly in sage the dogs use the falcon to reconnect with the hare a great deal. Also it is not uncommon for the falcon to spot a hare out of sight of the dogs and go after it, the dogs learn to follow the falcon and catch hares they ordinarinly wouldnt even see. The bells on the bird also help when the dogs lose track as they key in on the sound. I hunt a lot of places with fairly heavy cover and without the falcon the dogs would never catch a hare there. all the best Dirtwinger
  4. The red dog is a purebred Kazak Tazi and the black dog is a Saluki/grey to a 1/4border collie, 1/4greyhound x Tazi. all the best Dirtwinger
  5. Filmed this last weekend hope you like. all the best Dirtwinger
  6. None of mine or Gregs dogs have taken a Coyote, although Gregs dogs have chased them a little. Never seen a fox to chase here in New Mexico. The two brothers of my dogs one of which is half Tazi have taken a coyote though. Cisco is a bit on the small side for yote at about 50lb's or so. Wullie some dogs do take coyotes singlehanded and the best can make it look very easy. I have a friend that has a big stag that will catch yotes and throw them in the air for fun then retrieve them. Good dogs can do it but it is a good idea to have more than one dog as coyotes can use one of their number to d

  8. These are some pics from a hunting trip in Texas last November, I borrowed them from the "Marshall Telemetry website so feel free to go there and look at some of the cool falconry pics from around the world. Me getting the dogs and bird ready My old dog Percy and Wasp a young 3/4grey 1/4beddie bitch coursing a hare My mate Gregs dog Jake on a hare
  9. The well known "ninja deer dog" technique My dad had a female harris hawk that ninja'd a roe in Scotland a few years ago. Coming down off the hill a roe flushed down a burn and the harris went after it, got kicked off after the first hit then went up above the deer. The hawk came down hitting the deer hard in the head and it fell and broke it's neck! Not bad for a 2lb bird, deer do break there necks when they fall at full tilt more than you might think. But a dog that could make them fall and break their necks every time would be highly unlikely, I'm sure it happens just not very often.
  10. I had a whippet years ago that had smashed his leg in a race. I would take him ratting regularly to give him some fun in his life. He was a great little ratter even on three legs. All the best Terence
  11. Thanks mate how is your pup bred? all the best Dirtwinger
  12. I find that the best economy is to buy very cheap knives and expensive knife sharpeners. i am sure archeologists in the far future will find my rusting knives scattered across the globe and think "Careless B*sterd!" Seriously well done, your first rabbit? I like the look of the dog handsome beast. all the best Dirtwinger
  13. thought it was puppy fat lol Nah! this is puppy fat, when this pup drops on your lap it's like a ball of blubber. he feels so soft and mushy it's hard to imagine he will be running in less than a year. How old is that skinny concentration camp dog of yours then? all the best Dirtwinger
  14. Looks a bit chubby to me. all the best Dirtwinger
  15. bble and exposed Whin most of the ground in New Mexico is sandy so never hard, even after freezing the sand is so dry it doesnt go hard. There is still some hard ground around here though. I have one field near where I live that varies from sandy to lava rubble and exposed rock. My old dog is as toughfooted as they come and he can take the rough stuff. But other dogs I wouldnt even go on there with. Heres some pics Nice typical New Mexico sandy ground Some of the lava rubble found in the field, most of it is loose on the sand so gives when the dogs run on it More of it, simi
  16. Cant remember the guys name, the bitch was a non merle rough coated hancock and the sire was a saluki. There were several merles in the litter and a mix of rough and smooth coated dogs my brother took a merle bitch and I went back the next day and bought the dog. its not a bad life over here lots of land and lots of hares. A bit too hot for my taste in the summer and the beer is crap but I'm hanging in there. I will be over in Ireland for Christmas this year as it happens if I have a couple of days free from family I will try and get out and see some sport. all the best Dirtwnger
  17. I have been out with Dutch at a couple of coursing meets, dont know him really well more a friend of a friend so to speak. If I lived in the south of the state I would see him more often I'm sure. Perhaps we can meet up after Christmas and do some daytime coursing without having to worry about PC Plod All the best Terence
  18. That last dog is stunning pal very similar to my own bitch saluki /grey /collie /grey / all the best steve. I like the look of your dog too, I like the merles that have black as the dominant colour I think they are the most striking looking of the merles. Granted it dont make them run any faster but nothing wrong with having a good looking dog. Although walking him could be a pain in the arse sometimes, with transit vans pulling alongside and money being offered through the window for him. I dont have that issue here in the US thank god. all the best Dirtwinger
  19. Those were the tame shots some of the others were very graphic and i would not put them up
  20. Coldblood greyhounds is a American term for smoothcoated dogs of mostly greyhound ancestry, basically a smooth American staghound. Rich none of my current dogs hunt coyotes, but there are plenty of dogs that can take a coyote singlehanded, my old deerhound cross in the pics did it once but was mostly hunted with other dogs so didnt get the chance to do single runs as a rule. Ratkilla, I dont hunt the coyotes any more as I concentrate on the hares with the dogs and falcons. There are a few out there I wouldnt mind killing though, they can be a real pain whilst I am out hunting. I had a
  21. It was a great days hunting we took four coyotes by 10 30am they dogs were well and truly knackered, good times.... all the best Dirtwinger
