Tazi's are central Asian running dogs similar to Saluki's but the Kazak ones are shorter and stockier than the average Saluki. The grand dam on the bitchs side was a imported Tazi from working lines(they pretty much are all from working lines in Kazakstan). Tazi 1/2 brother to the dam All the best Dirtwinger

He is 3/8grey, 1/4tazi, 1/4australian shepherd and 1/8 border collie. I am a little worried that he may turn out favouring too much of the herding side of his breeding. He has a lot more bone than some of his siblings and a thicker coat too, if he turns out as good as his sire I will put him over a saluki or Tazi in a few years time. But he will have to have talent as well as looks before that happpens. The sire and dam are both good hare dogs so I am hopeful, thus far he has been the most advanced of the pups. Back in the eighties I handreared a whippet, she had no instinct to suckle and couldnt get on a teat even with help. She was affectionatly named "Cretin" and was a lot of work. She was raced and never amounted to much, pet grade at most was all you could say for her. my only experience of handrearing thank god! all the best Dirtwinger

Hi Tony, I live in Albuquerque and course jacks I currently have a litter of 5 week old pups out of my lurchers and have two bitches left if your interested. Both parents have been very sucessful hare coursers, the pups are 1/4 austrailian shepherd, 1/8 border collie, 3/8 greyhound and 1/4 Tazi. Glad to hear of a new courser in NM. all the best Dirtwinger

I thought whippets were the origonel bull cross anyway, they were created by breeding down small greys and crossing them with fighting bulls back in the day. Growing up we had a couple of whippets that threw back to the bull, built like tanks didnt feel pain and would take on anything all the best Dirtwinger

Nothing has changed it seems since I left the Uk. only difference is the idiots can brag across the web rather than just at the local boozer. I think the two main points on this thread are this. A young dog needs a serious committment in time to prove its potential. And potential owners of lurchers need to find a mentor they can trust, do the research and choose a pup from proven lines suitable to their quarry and ground. A well informed well guided novice is more likely to head in the right direction with a lurcher by their side that meets their expectations. But only if they have a realisti

Iv'e never seen a brown hare that could outpace a decent dog completly they always have to resot to turning to shake off a good dog. I have seen blacktailed jackrabbits that could outrun good dogs but they are not common. every once in a while I will run into one that is in a different league alltogher and leaves my dog eating dust. but brown hares NO!! all the best Dirtwinger

Work and weather permitting I like a minimum of 3 days a week on jackrabbits, usually I'm out for 1 to 2 hours and run one 1 to 2 hares although sometimes more. I try to get out 4 to 5 times a week if I can. I usually stop at one hare but have gone to as many as 6 in one session on rare occaisions. all the best Dirtwinger

I agree with what your saying but there is nothing intrinsicley wrong with breeding your own line. Several things need to be in place first, first and foremost the dogs need to have been proven before being bred. They may not be what you are aiming for in the long run but they must be able to produce useful dogs. Your goal is to produce one or two you will keep but just as importantly you must plan for homes for all the other pups you will produce. I am developing my own line here in the US simply because no one breeds what I want. I still waited nine years between litters. Once I had custo

I had a whippet as a kid that jumped 2 8ft fences at 12yrs old to get covered by grans airdale. The pups from the litter were pretty handy, one in particular got a real reputation. That dog took over a 100 foxes is first full season hunting and went on to be a noted deer slayer. To such an extent that the owner couldnt leave the house without the police following him or pikies and sundry others trying to buy the dog off him. He passed it on to someone as it became real hassle having the dog, I dont know what happened to the dog after that and this was back in the early 's. all the best Dir

You are correct, John has really nice Salukis I have been out coursing with them in the past and they are as good as Salukis get in the US. There could be better dogs out here but I haven't seen them thats for sure. I look forward to seeing how they come out as Steves dogs could do with a little more hight from a purely coursing perspective. If they turn out well I might be asking for one from a future litter. all the best Dirtwinger

Tepe Gawha was a Saluki bred from desert lines, nothing to do with Tazi's, as far as I know ! Cheers. Yes that's right the sire is DB saluki. I had forgotten as all his other litters have been Tazi's apart from the one accident that produced my collie/grey xtazi that I have just bred off. nice looking pups though, the silver brindle is going to be a looker. Steve is keeping that one. all the best Dirtwinger

This is what happens when you are tired and in a hurry. Left the house at 6:50am to go to work thought the bitch was done whelping, asked my girlfriend to keep an eye on them first litter for the bitch and all. She called me just now and told me we have 2 more pups a black and white bitch and dog. Not enough sleep can make you make mistakes, lucky for me everything is ok. Wont let that happen again! all the best Dirtwinger

She seems to be enjoying pregnancy too much, she,s just lying around happy as can be but no pups. Maybe tonight we'll see, if she didn't take on the first mating they would only have been due yesterday. I'll let you all know when they come, I think 8pups but I got three new homes lined up yesterday so i'm not stressing about a big litter anymore. all the best Dirtwinger Well they are here, 5 pups, 2 merle dogs, 2 black bitches and a brindle bitch born between 3am and 6:20am so I,m very tired. All are doing well and the sire is back home from his cancer surgery. Here are a few pics, t

Percy is back home now, it will be about 3 weeks until he is back to normal as he is pretty anemic even after the blood transfusion. The vet thinks he had the tumour for about 9 months before it ruptured so I wouldnt say I caught very early I was just lucky. If it had spread from the spleen he wouldnt be here now.
