  1. Not the same genes, they are different species and produce sterile offspring, this is because they have different numbers of chromosomes (strands of dna that carry thousands of genes) i think you have slightly miss understood what he is saying, it is still the same genes being mixed up if you cross a donkey with the horse or a horse with a donkey
  2. Other way around mate: male (i.e. sperm) decides sex. Females have double X (XX) and male has X and Y (XY), so in meiosis when the cells are split the femal egg will always have an X and the sperm can either have an X or a Y. Great discussion all! Do you find that looks of the offspring change depending on which breed you use as male vs. female?? (Trigger touched on this but hoping for some more detail...or even pics!) i have mainly noticed the difference in the shape of the heads the dogs out the gsd bitch seem to have a squarer head like the gsd. where as those out
  3. 25-27" is my ideal size. Is there any other gains in a dog which is any bigger other than perhaps weight. is a 30" dog any faster than a 26" dog?
  4. I have worked gsd X greyhounds bred both ways round there apears to be a slightly different apearance in looks and mental attitude in the dogs. if you put a greyhound dog over a good gsd bitch i think that more of the pups have turned out to be good workers than those bred out of the greyhound bitch. i think that the mother contributes the mental attitude and maybe a small amount of shape where as the father contributes the speed an height. thats why i always like the mother to be the gsd.
  5. How many of you lamp your dogs from slip leads, i never use them myself, do you think it provides your dog with a better advantage over its quarry compared to a dog that isnt worked from a slip lead.
  6. I would say a collie/greyhound mate they are a nice easy dog to train for a first dog.
  7. i am interested to her about dogs that have excelled at lamping on any given quarry. it dont necaceraly come down to a dog thats had one good night and caught a massive bag. it comes down to numbers game day and night when you judge a dog on how good it is but real good dogs are consitant and prove them selves to be on a top level time and time again.
  8. we here loads about all these top class daytime dogs. Is there any famous lamping dogs living or dead if so what breed are they and what are there achievments.
  9. personally i dont see anything wrong with trying this cross and i take my hat off to those who experiment with different breeds after all every breed of lurcher that is reconized today was at one time or another a experiment. you dont know what the results are going to be unless you are willing to give it a try.
  10. thats a nice looking dog how tall is it.
  11. if i was ready for another pup i would probably give one a try but it would have to be a greyhound dog over the akita bitch.
  12. it should be on a lead at all times ,because its a MAN EATER it was self defence
  13. surely dogs can be to fast for big bags and hard nights/days work, if you look at cheetahs and greyhounds loads of speed no stamina one or maybe two runs in a day and thats your lot. what i am saying is think dogs can be to fast.
  14. I never have my dog on the lead when out lamping/hunting
  15. a running dog over a inteligent bitch from a line of dogs that are still doing what they were originally bred for, like collies or german shepherds.
  16. in my mind the ultimate pot filler has to be a half cross.

  21. I use the deben 14ah belt and pouch pack with the lance lamp with a 30watt bulb in. never had the battery go flat on me yet it gives you 180 minutes continouse light. nights when i lamp massive fields i use the same set up but put the lance reflector housing on my lamp and it gives a little extra lamping distance.
