I know f**k all about independance, (you'll love that eh, lol) I just have a mild bordering nerdy interest in military and naval stuff. Malt's more clued up on the general stuff if you ask me, his post earlier on the political implications was a cracker.

Can I put you back on my Xmas list then Baw ahem Suz?

For once I agree with you. I don't want the union split up but it just irks me to listen to English guys like yourself talk about BRITIANS armed forces as if they are englands. It's you northern buggers that want out and to divvy everything up, so based on spending the British military is 90% the Unions and only 10% Scottish. Before your rabid nationalists north of the wall brought the idea up it belonged firmly to all of us and there was no 'ours and yours' talk at all. You see the flag I'm flying...... British first English second in my mind. I know you lot are all Scot/Welsh/NI firs

What about 'Suzy sweetheart'?

I have no doubt of that, but based on the figure of £2.5B quoted for future spending is small change for a serious 21st century submarine fleet and considering Scotlands dependance on off shore oil I'd of thought them to be considered pretty essential? But yeah, you're right, you could have a tidy little defence force purely for defending home soil. But personally I'm proud of our current ability to be able to project our word just about anywhere in the world protecting any and all British interests and citizens not just defencively but offensively. For instance if a British Embassy is und

I didn't say you would have no money I said you wouldn't be able to afford a submarine fleet. The modest fleet of astute class subs clocked in at £7B. Will the £2.5B a year cover the procurement cost? Or will you look at the second hand market? Or as I suggested not bother as it's just too expensive? You don't half talk some shit born. Since you like googling statistics, can you tell me how much Britian BORROWS a day? We can't afford to sustain the money this governments spending the now never mind once we all break up. I'm against independence but if god forbid it happens, we will do wh

Hells Bells!!!! The Vulcan Black Buck raids durring the Falklands set a record for the longest bombing sorty in history, I believe to remain unbroken untill the 91 Gulf war.

That referbished Vulcan flew over my folks house about a month back on the saturday and sunday, fecking awsome bit of Cold war kit!

Why....... because it's not only the Scottish devolution affects.

In the SAS yeah, I think that statistic may differ for the arguably more capable RM swimmer canoeists of the SBS. And the mad fookers who get launched from subs !!!!! Yeah them! That'll not be a concern of Salmonds though because he won't be able to afford a sub never mind shoot marines from one. LOL, sorry mate, more shite, scotland will be poor bla bla bla I've posed a more comprehensive post on exactly that previously. If it's shite then please comment mate...

They build the Trident missile yeah, which I believe is a result of contracts promised to help deal with our post WWII debt to them. I didn't realise we leased the missiles though, we deffo make the warheads in house, well to my knowledge. We lease the missiles under a complicated agreement but the thermonuclear warheads are our own.. The missiles are taken from a shared pool and rotated back and forth to the US for maintainance. The original contract was with the US and Polaris, it was redrawn for trident along the same agreements. The US do still have a limited number of nuclear warheads wi

One thing an independant Scotland would have is Infantry and SFs that are second to none! But I just can't see how you could muster anything more than a half arsed defence force. You would rely heavily on your allies for military support in deployment and power projection and the number one ally would probably be the ones you were so desperate to escape from. It makes absolutely no sense to separate other than five minutes of pride.

Just because Scotland currently chucks in £3B and only receives £2B in direct millitary spending doesn't mean that £2B or even the £2.5B quoted would fund a adequate never mind "extraordinarily good" defence force. The UK defence budget is in excess of £35B to cover everything, that covers defence systems outside of Scotland that directly support Scottish military assets. Will that £2.5B budget cover Frigates, coastal patrol vessels, air defence Destroyers and amphibious assault ships as part of a basic Naval service capable of rapid deployment of troops and assets? An independant Scotland

Woah, now you've lost me. I thought manufacture and production of British warheads was carried out by the AWE.... a privatised company effectively under UK Gov control. ??? We have total control of our nuclear deterent and furthermore give our sub commanders total control of launching them needing no physical authorisation procedure from the Uk Gov unlike our US allies.

A Huge Loss, End Of English Ship Building.

I agree wih everything you're saying GTE. Seeing a 21st Century British carrier battle group will be incredible. I'm gonna make a trip down south especially. -

GTE, you say it's not being shut.......... but there are still 900 odd jobs being axed there and the end of an 800 year history of ship building. That to me is a tragic loss. In terms of the countrys defence needs and security though you are quite right. Out of interest GTE, you always seem dead clued up of this stuff, any particular reason? If you don't mind me asking. -
There will be two QE class carriers that stand in opposition to that statement. Lol

A Huge Loss, End Of English Ship Building.
Born Hunter replied to Born Hunter's topic in General Talk
Aye, but Glasgow will continue I think? Portsmouth is iconic in British Naval history and it's gonna be finished completely. But yeah the job losses are across the board and will affect all the ship yards I believe. Bad times all round. It'll be even worse for the UK if Scotland become independant....
