  1. He is a real one aint he............ Yes. Depending on your meaning.
  2. I think you will find you are wrong. Only deer and birds your not allowed to lamp. It is illegal to take Game by artificial light. In this respect hares are classed as game. So stop it all you naughty boys.
  3. Theres not many good photos of him about-the little sod was never still for long enough! I have a couple that I will try to scan and post.
  4. The "breed from the best" dictum is a good rule of thumb but no guarantee of success. Combining 2 differing lines to achieve the qualities you desire can bring good results. Its then up to you to make a dog of it and continue to breed for the qualities you want. ie; Increase the size but keep the heart or more difficult, bring size down but keep strength and heart. Plummers are given bad rep mostly by those who know nothing about them or have any experience of them, barring seeing one or two second rate ones. I've seen some crap in other types,(and some plummers too),but wouldnt write them off
  5. FTB-They originated from Lines of tried and tested earth dogs and were of the type in wirralmans old photos. Some early breeders (myself included) tried to maintain the ability for ground work. Many of mine went to lads who did a lot of ground work with them and they worked well-as well as any terrier. (Several lads stated that their plummers were among the best Ground dogs they had owned). Lines began to diverge as coat colour and pattern became one of the most important breeding criteria, Are todays plummers capable of consistent earth work? At this moment in time folks who work them to g
  6. How many have you seen at work to give such a sweeping generalization Mr Ho? You are right about one thing though-you wouldn't have one given,or bought from anyone I know. Keep up the very informative and constructive criticism, you're a credit to the terrier world. Is your spell checker broken btw?
  7. Hi Goldfinch and wirralman. I dont post much now because of the bitching that goes hand in hand with the plummer. Seems I spoke too soon on this thread too. Theres always one. (At least).
  8. Nice to see a Plummer thread without the usual bitching. (So far). Thats a tidy looking litter wirralman, and an exceptionally large one! Best of luck with them and good on you for choosing the right breeding criteria-work.
  9. Seen it done, but the chap was an exceptional trainer. A variation of the German or force training method using small steps to make the dog hold an object.(Rather than chew or play with it). Then hold and release on command. Hold object slightly away from dog so it will reach forward to take it. Gradually increase the distance until you can throw the object and the dog will run and fetch it back. It has to be done in small steps, only increasing when the dog is 100% on the stage its at. Dogs trained this way will retrieve to hand every time, but it takes timing and patience.
  10. Nice dog. Is it first cross?
  11. Take a tic tac and stop talking shit....... "Draw and kill badgers"??
  12. How very dare you! Cornishman! I'm 100% proof Geordie. Came down to Cornwall in the 60's on missionary work and decided to stay. Injected some outcross genes into the native population.
  13. No-being a bull x would make it a donkey! A tumbler is obviously an even clumsier dog that falls arse over tit when catching a rabbit.
  14. its a partnership, he dont fear me and i dont fear him, never is there a need to dominant or raise your voice,to the dog You still seem to equate dominance with fear. Agreed the dog should be your partner-you however should be the senior partner-ie dominant. Nothing to do with fear-maybe respect would be a better word. If the dog does not respect you as the pack leader, you cannot train it. If you are pack leader, you are the dominant one in the partnership. No fear,no beatings, just the natural order of the pack. Labtastic- You are spot on. The point of my post-Dont blame the dog. Esp.
  15. There's a number of things going on here , she's young, and she wont be experiencing much prey drive yet, but i would take the retrieve object out, when your out with her and just bounce it in your hand to get her interest going, just 5 mins few times a day, tease her with it, this will build up her drive for the object and at the same time her interest in you which is more important in my mind, After a few days teasing her , show her , tease her then put it down to her still holding it , let her tug on it , praise her loads, then when shes tugging like f**k on it , let her have it, praise

  17. No offence but its nothing to do with breeding, retrieving is down to training. If the dog is not doing what you want it to,it isn't trained, simple. "Dragged back empty mouthed" sums it up really.
  18. Sounds like a socialization problem. As some have said,I've heard it can be a problem with dogs got late from David. I also had a 3/4 bred Taffy pup at 8 weeks and had no problems at all. Fair play for sticking with it-it will pay off.
  19. One thing I've noticed, Most real dog men,who consisantly own top class, obedient hunting dogs rarely speak to their dogs when working........
  20. The Czech baiting championships?? Captive fox vs dog=BAITING not sport.
  21. All this talk of poached pheasants reminds me of the hard times when lamped hares fetched a fiver a piece in my end of the world...... definitely not stealing either, just good old romanticised poaching...........
