    Training book

Have it and its a good book, and I can't see how Gundog training has changed that much since it was written. I don't know how relevant it would be to training a lurcher though.
  2. Oly, My Brittany was an absolutely superb dog and I loved her to bits. They are not as "extreme" as the likes of English Pointers, English Setters, Irish Setters etc. They basically wouldn't cover the same amount of ground and are more of a medium range pointer and tend to hunt within a maximum range of 75 to 100 yds of the handler whereas as the "pure" pointing breeds are far more wide ranging. They also tend to run at a far more sensible pace and have great stamina because of this. Mine was extremely intelligent and her only downfall was retrieving, which was entirely my fault, as
  3. I would say a gentle walk the following day just to keep the muscles supple and stop them cramping, especially if the dog is kept kennelled all the time. If they are a house dog and the run of a garden then they will keep supple just be pottering around all day. A dog kept kennelled is more likely to just lie in bed. We found with hunting horses that if they have a hard days hunting, the worst thing to do is leave them in the stable the following day. Instead, we took them out for a short, gentle hack and they seemed to recover better.
  4. I saw one once at a Game Fair in Northern Ireland and it was certainly a fine looking animal, and on paper certainly sounds like an ideal all round gundog. However, with rarer breeds like these, there will always be a smaller gene pool of them available to buy and they may not necessarily be kept and worked as they ought to be. For example, if you want to buy a Lab or Springer, there are thousands available from a massive gene pool, with a long history of work and field trials to look back on. This obviously doesn't guarantee anything, but if you buy a Springer with a pedigree full of
  5. Retriever is basically a group of Gundogs made of different breeds namely: Labrador retriever Golden Retriever Flat Coated retriever Curly coated retriever Chesapeake Bay retriever and believe it or not Irish Water Spaniel, which although called a spaniel actually runs in retriever field trials. There might be some I'm forgetting, probably is, but you get the idea.
  6. Looks absolutely fine for the job you have in mind. Just bear in mind that just 'cos your after rabbits, she might still find a fox earth and go to ground when you're not expecting it. As long as you're prepared for that and haven't a problem with it, she should be fine. Other than that, she's certainly a looker.
  7. The World of the Working Terrier by David Harcombe Great book to dip into now and again, not to be read as an "instruction manual" type of book.
  8. Hi Dogger, Sound like a great little pup, but maybe it would be better if you didn't let her chase the ones that are too close to the ditch and that she is unlikely to catch. What a pup needs at that age is simple squatters or one in the middle of a field that she has a better chance of catching. The absolute best thing that you can ever give a young dog is confidence. If they have too many unsuccessful runs, they will lose their drive and maybe even start opening up. This isn't a criticism, and you probably already know all this, but I thought I'd make this point just in case you d
  9. Will, There should be a revolving collar on the Opinel to stop it shutting on your fingers. Opinels are superb little knives, cheap as chips and razor sharp, and it's not the end of the world if you lose or break it. I'd be afraid to take a couple of hundred pound knife into the field to be honest, it would only end up as an ornament on the mantelpiece.
  10. Have never heard of anyw and apart from the build of the Red Setter I couldn't think of any good reason to. Don't get me wrong, I think the Irish Red Setter is the most beautiful dog in the world and I would love to have one as a rough shooting dog but I can't see how they would anything positive to a lurcher. They are extremely aloof and quite hair brained at times, and very challenging to train. They will never be handled to the same standard as a Labrador, Spaniel or even a HPR. I think you more or less point them in the right direction and let them do their job. Obviously, they
  11. Great nose, generally quite well behaved and lovely gentle natures. Can be extremely stubborn when they get on a strong trail, especially when running as a pack and liable to end up in the next county if they pick up on a dog fox in January or similar. Just make sure that your guns don't miss and you'll be fine. Take a trip to your local Beagle pack some Saturday, great hunting, real purist stuff.
  12. I've never been involved in AI'ing a dog but I have been involved with hundeds of artificial inseminations with horses and I can't think of any reason for this. There are loads of old wives tales and stupid theories regarding AI but 99% of them are bull crap, so I would advise you to talk directly to someone has been involved directly with dog AI and not someone who has heard a load of old nonsense but never actually been involved.
  13. To be honest I've never been that fussy about what spade I carry when ferreting, I usually pick up the lightest one. I've never had a really deep dig when ferreting, 3 foot would be noteworthy. It's not like terrier work where you could quite easily have a 6 foot dig and maybe twice that if you lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view). I have a good selection of spades, shovels, bars etc and I usually carry a really small little ladies garden spade that cost a tenner, and a short little 2 foot probe with me when ferreting and leave the heavier and stronger stuff in the car and
  14. I don't think that all anti-smokers can be compared to anti-hunters. If someone wants to smoke thats their own business and their own health, but if they smoke in my presence then they are directly affecting me. If someone goes hunting they are not doing anything that directly affects anti-hunters. Anti-smokers are quite right to stand up against something that affects them, but Anti-hunters are just idiots that want to stop something that has no direct consequences for them whatsoever.
  15. Is it just me or do those rabbits look really big. I´ve never seen 41 rabbits in a day, let alone caught that many. Well done, some lovely lurchers.
  16. Hi all, Exactly as it says above, how do I preserve a rabbit skin?
  17. Wellll........ For a vet to carry out a gynaecological examination on a horse, they have to insert their arm right up to the shoulder. So, I imagine that it's quite possible that they would need to get a bit further in for an Elephant. I'm glad I ain't a vet.......
  18. The f*cker, doesn't he know full well that if he marks a gallery "naked" that people are going to click on it. The B*stard..... :icon_eek: My eyes, me eyes, where's the bleach?

He weighs meat! He's a butcher.
  21. Sorry Mods, Due to my general ineptness around computers I managed to post it twice. Please delete one for me
  22. TAKEN WORD FOR WORD FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE, SO PARDON THE PLAGEURISM Finally! At LAST! A comprehensive list of dangerous dogs. Dogs that go snap in the night/day/late afternoon. The study was published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science and was based on interviews with 6,000 dog owners by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. This was not the result of scare mongering or ' the look of' a dog or a terror of breed specific animals, this was honest to goodness plain old research and it makes for interesting reading don't you think? Here is the list of dogs most likely
  23. I travel to Germany a couple of times a year and can speak a little of the language but be very wary of the translations sites, they can be very unpredictable.
