  2. :o Oh Christ, just what I need to be hearing after splashing out nearly 200 notes on a brand new Mk3 m with 2 collars.
  3. Brilliant post WH, Well written and super pics. That's exactly the type of thing that we should be seeing on these forums.
  4. If ever a face had mischief written all over it, that has to be the one. I also think that she won't spent too much of her time sitting still like that for you. Lovely pup, best of luck with her :clapper:
  5. Methinks something is taking a piss out of the silly single handed fox dog nonsense in other threads
  6. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: A sense of humour certainly needed around here. I'm Irish too and I found it funny.

    book reading

I have the entire Bill Bryson and have read most of them 4 or 5 times. He has one called "Neither Here Nor There" about backpacking through Europe. One chapter is dedicated to Hamburg and in particular the Reeperbahn "red light district", you have to read this, hilarious.

    book reading

"The Life and Times of The Thunderbolt Kid" by Bill Bryson Absolutely laugh out loud, tears in your eyes, tea out your nose funny. Have read it about 4 times and will read it many, many more. Quite simply it's the story of Bill Bryson growing up in small town America in the 1950's, it's not a comedy book, but the funniest thing I have ever read. I cannot possibly recommend it highly enough.
  9. HD55 Absolutely stunning pointer, my compliments. For all the supporters that Spaniels and Labradors (including myself), I still think that for grace, style and beauty, you cannot beat the pointing and setting breeds. Unfortunately, I've never had tremendous success and I think that maybe our temperaments just don't match, as I've gotten on fine with Labs, Spaniels and HPR's. My dream shooting holiday is to spend a day shooting grouse over pointers and setters on a scottish grouse moor. Heaven. I could watch them all day.
  10. Field trials were originally intended as the ultimate test of a working gundog but over the years have almost evolved into a completely different sport. I think the original idea was that "a good field trial spaniel should be a good working dog with a bit more style, flair and polish" or something along those lines. It's quoted in Keith Erlandson's excellent book but I haven't got it beside me just now. The problem I found with trialling dogs is that they worked far too fast and didn't pace themselves as they might only have to run for twenty minutes in a trial and have to impress t
  11. Deker, I feel the same way as yourself about these driven shoots. My idea of game shooting will always be strolling through the fields with a dog hunting ahead of me and a gun in the crook of my arm. I have been a gun once at a driven shoot and to be honest, I would have preferred to be either picking up or beating which I get far greater enjoyment from. However, each to their own, and in fairness their money does provide employment and sport for a lot of the rest of us.
  12. Twisted gut, christ that bloody hurt
  13. Funny that your last reply. I was just about to say that you wouldn't see too many Holland & Holland's out decoying. Glorious piece of craftsmanship though, would be my No. 1 choice anyday (after I will the Lotto)
  14. I was just wondering if she knew that she was being ogled by thousands of randy hunting folk I can just see you wearing that nice shiny rifle, kinda like a lollipop stick
  15. Just out of interest, is she a member of this forum?
  16. My Mk 2 is exactly the same, every time I locate my ferret it says 4.5 feet deep, whether or not it's actually 6 inches or 3 feet deep. Very disappointing for an expensive piece of kit. How come the B&F terrier boxes can manage to get it right? Is there something very difficult about making them? OR Are Deben just firing out any old crap because they have no competition and don't need to bother doing it better? Anybody with any electronic knowledge to answer this?
  17. Fascinating thread Well written, super accompanying photos and an obvious passion for the subject. Keep it coming, I for one am certainly enthralled and I wish I could find something of equal quality amongst all the shooting magazines I buy every month. Also, great website.
  18. I'll just make one more small point here. Over the years and with the benefit of lessons learned the hard way, I very much live by the mantra "value versus cost". In 1996 I paid £500 Irish pounds for a trained Labrador, which was about a months wages at the time. Everyone thought I was mad. However, I bought myself a fully trained Labrador that had won a Field Trial and as well as that, I bought him off a really nice guy who brought me picking-up a number of times and really put a lot of effort into making sure that I knew how to handle the dog properly and how to keep him to that s
  19. Sorry, but I can't completely agree with that. While a Lab MIGHT well trash through cover, it's not their natural job, and it's doubtful that they will ever hunt up to the standard of a Springer or a German Pointer. Springers and German Pointers are both well known as all rounders, because that's the way they have been bred and evolved over the years. I don't know a single serious Lab trialler that would allow their Lab to hunt up cover as once they start to do that, they tend to become less steady at the peg and more likely to run in. Labs are a SPECIALIST breed who are second to
  20. Killing animals just for the sake of it has no sporting value at all. If that's all he's interested in, then why doesn't he shoot paper targets or clay pigeons instead of giving the rest of us a bad name. That's exactly what the anti's want to hear and they would like to think we all carry on like that.
  21. Hi Skip, Fascinating stuff, it's great to get an insight into the sporting scene in other countries. I've found that when specifically hunting Snipe rather than just as part of a mixed day that it's best to just have a retriever walking at heel and not to have a dog hunting at all. They tend to be quite jumpy anyway and flush readily whereas they can be very difficult to find when you do shoot one.
  22. That's sound like exactly what rough shooting is meant to be and the price sounds great too.
  23. My pleasure Oly, Feel free to PM me if you ever have any more queries.
  24. I support that comment wholeheartedly, there is a reason why Labradors are the most common retrievers in the shooting field !! While it's lovely to own a minority breed and it's even better to get out there and work them, from an entirely practical point of view, it's a lot safer option to go with the proven, tried and tested breeds. Go to a retriever field trial sometime and most days the entry will be 99% made up of Labradors. It depends on your interest. My own interest level is mainly in training the dog, shooting is only a way of working with the dog and furthering his educ
