Trout Fishing: How Much Kit Do You Carry?
neil r replied to Pete E's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
If it's fast action you want you need to be looking at the Japanese makers like Sakura, majorcraft, megabass , tenryu for example . They are streets ahead with ul gear. They start at around £50 for a Sakura ryokan and go £700+ for some of the high end models . Their lures and reels are the same aswell . You can pick a a jap spec reel and the same one from anywhere else in world and it will be slightly higher spec . You can get the shimano jdm spec reels from shimmy dealers over here aswell now without having to order from Japan . -
The lines that came with it are dt #9's . I'm hoping to have a go tomorrow if I can get time and if they are not right I'm thinking of getting a #10 John Norris integrated shooting head and see if that's better .

Personally with the rapala i think the fish hit them really hard and i have my drag set very soft so the fish can draw a bit of line off the drag as i hit it, otherwise i think the tear the hook hold out. That's what I do with perch because of their delicate mouths . With my multiplier set ups for pike though , I basically lock the clutch up and even though some of the hits are savage it needs to be done to set the hooks properly -

I wonder if the choice of mono or braid is a factor with hook ups? I use braid for sea fishing, but I have so far stayed with mono for the bit of freshwater fishing I do...On a small spinning rod, I suspect braids lack of stretch might make it a bit harsh when striking? I will only use braid for lure fishing and all my rods from the ultralights to the 180-300g jerkbait and swimbait rods a -

I've got rapala j-13's , dt-4's and shad raps and not had any problems hooking up with them . I'd love to know what people are doing with them to not hook up properly although I suspect their hooks might need a bit of a tickle . Your right about having confidence in lures . One of my favourite pike lures is the squirrely burt but if you Google them you will see they are a marmite lure , some people just can't get a fish on them and others get loads -

There's a few lures made on that principle now like the savage gear line thrus and mr whiggly . It's a good way of doing it although it's mainly done on the line thrus and whigglys to protect the soft plastic from getting ripped up . I've had Toby's in the past but never had a fish on them but then again I hardly used them so it was a viscous circle . How do you find the hook up ratio with them rapalas , ive seen it said on other forums that they are poor hookers . Can't really see it myself because the back treble is free and they are not a big deep sided lure . -

What's the one in the bottom left on the second pic , not seen one like that before -
Ive been told they are not bad for the money but I've never actually seen one being used . As soon as I get chance I'll have a go casting with it and see if the dt9 lines that come with it match it

Yes . I think one of the staff died and the owner moved the shop over to colne or barnoldswick but I from what I can gather he was ill so shut it altogether

I tend to use use the smallest 2 sizes of blue fox (not shitty fox tackle) spinners rather than mepps, no real reason for that other than the shop didn't have mepps . Whatever you do , don't think all spinners are the same . It's not unusual for cheaper spinners not to spin . The main rod I use for ultralight fishing is a Sakura sportism 7ft UL with either a shimano aernos in 2500 size with 5kg yellow power pro or a sienna in 2500 with multicoloured 5kg power pro depth hunter braid . I'll take a pic if you want after the football but this is it with the sienna and multicoloured braid in this v -

I normally use one of these for my ultralight fishing but I've been using a chest mount camera so I've just been sticking half a dozen in a small box in my pocket and leaving some others in the car just in case . And then it's just a case of a small rod and reel and a folding net just in case I hook something a bit bigger . http://www.gerrysfishing.com/sakura-chest-packerkoa-bag.ir -
I've been in gerrys for sea fishing gear , didn't think they did fly gear . I'll be up that way fishing in the next few weeks so I'll have a good look round this time

Any body know anything about the older Shakespeare oracle salmon rods , not the xt version . I just got talking to a customer in the tackle shop and ended up buying a 12ft #9-10 and oracle reel and 3 lines for £45 off him . He said it was a switch rod and I didn't really have a proper look at it , but on having a look when I got home it's a small Spey rod which I'm not bothered about , just wondering if they are any good or not

Never been to John Norris but its a shop I'm going to with the mrs for my birthday present in march. One of my clubs has fishing on the Eden , esk , irt and mint aswell , not sure the mrs will be happy if I stop of for a bit of fishing though . I won't have time to go up tomorrow though and I want a 10ft 3 weight for Sunday , preferably a vision or maybe an hardy if I can get one

Does anyone know any shops with a good stock of fly gear in or close to Lancashire , the one I used to use in Stockport has shut down and most of the local shops have either no fly gear or just a token amount of cheap low end stuff . Ted carters used to alright but it's not the shop it used to be and most of the gear on their website is just a list of tackle they don't actually stock . I know I can order online but I like to get hands on before I buy when I'm looking for rods

Did a bit when I was at school and found out my family used to own half of great harwood and also the judge who had the pendle witches locked up was also a family member who was a landowner and had them locked up because he wanted their land . Don't know how it was all lost though

Both work and it's just down to how you want to fish on the day but you will cover more water and as a result more pike with lures . You go a while without a bite and then you hit a few back to back and then nothing again till you find some more .
