  1. NO I'm afraid. The zero moves too much as the lenses are shifted. Regular photography of course doesn't have a requirement that maintains it like rifle sights need, although I have seen zero shifting on orthodox scopes too. It's possible that it might work if you spot - then always return to maximum zoom for the shot - but I'd not want to be buying one just to check that out.
  2. As long as you like Ian - but the longer they get the more IR will be needed. "200mm should suit 200 yards. but remember you cannot zoom back for easier quarry spotting. In my opinion these are best suited to sub 100 yard ranges if you want to minimise the use of IR.
  3. The approximate mag of the 50mm lens is about 3.5 - ideal for air ranges in my opinion as far as acquisition is concerned. The longer video was using my HMR and that is best suited to a 75mm lens if the maximum range you are likely to head shoot is about 100 yards, it approximately relates to 5.5 to 6 mag. Did you note how the longest shot of the night was a bit too small on the screen for a headshot? Longer ranges with longer lenses are possible but you need IR more often because the lens lets in less light - but less IR is needed in comparison to the same range shot with a rear add-on NV
  4. Thanks Dan, I'll rule myself out of the 200 yards ability because my 'scopeless' builds are better suited to air and rimfire ranges TBH where the shooter needs to be most covert. For the benefit of other readers, 'scopeless' allows us to use zero - or near zero IR within rimfire ranges - and needs a rifle dedicated to NV. In short it is a very low light CCTV rig with built in adjustable on screen crosshairs. A couple of vids for anyone interested, the first one shows the rig with a lens suited to 50ish yards - price is £340.
  5. It's an EJ230, I believe it's the same spec as the e700 but in a bullet camera format. To be honest I think you can do a neater build with an e700. Did you remove the IR filter?
  6. I'm into a newer project and won't be needing both of my Watec cameras so one can go to someone who can use it for a NV build. The high low gain switch can be accessed easily because I have drilled an access port through the rear plate lid. Gain can now be selected with a cocktail stick or similar. Supplied with the clamp and a choice of three lenses. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Dave-G/media/DedicatedWatecrig2_zpsef99803b.jpg.html?sort=3&o=3 http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Dave-G/media/Lenschoice_zpsbe7c007c.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2 £110 posted via RMSD. 7. I occasionally get PMs about these lens and spacer sets from members - and another one from a THL member enquiring through the 'bay sort of reminded to repost these. Being as they are so specialist in the UK I can't imagine this conflicting with any trade interests on here? I have umpteen of them at a forum members price of £10 for the lens and £10 for the focal spacer + £6 RMSD (only).
  8. Heyup, Dunno how I missed this - yep my name on the auction site is "501b" .... 'cos I sell 501b torch upgrades and conversions to varying degrees and budgets lol. They'll be slightly cheaper to forum members than on the bay but you can see the variations I supply by taking a look. Cheers lads.
  9. Do you always do this much tyre kicking for thirty quid ish? I would go for the 501b myself but others will say different. Here's my case for the 501b:
  10. A doubler takes it about 8 mag - which is rather tight for a .22lr IMO. If it only 'might' be used for the 223 you might like to wait till you decide for sure, by which time they might be a bit cheaper, or there may be a few second hand ones that people don't really want for their air rifles when they reluctantly give up trying to convince themselves they made a good decision to fit one. I honestly don't think I could hunt with an air rifle at 8 mag in the dark with no peripheral vision unless I also carried a spotter.
  11. I made this video using a home brewed/converted 501b IR torch - note how you can see so much further than the quarry - and the detail that can be seen beyond the bunny as the first shot strikes: The 501b item number is 271354939931 but 10% less via the forum for air / subsonic ranges. Of course the answers you got are pure quesswork as to if they will suit your application because you gave no indication of caliber or range requirement. A point worth deeper consideration in your case is that not only can the 501b modules be changed very quickly in the field with no tools, I'm
  12. Some bunnies fell to the Photon this morning. I've put this here because it is strictly night vision related. Illumination was with a 1 watt ebay IR and an Ahorton lens in a 501B. The image gets a bit better with less eye flare (as seen through the Photon eye screen rather than the video) if I use a lower power IR LED that I make for the 501b torch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5yxfAwwzVM#
  13. Those nights leave me with mixed feelings: Satisfaction about getting such a good result and some pangs of regret at the sheer destruction of life. I know we shouldn't feel like that but after so many it kind of creeps up on me.
  14. A 1 watt ebay IR module in a 501b with an aspheric lens is more than enough for your N770 - it has very similar capture potential as the Photon. Get a cup of tea ready and be prepared for my boring dulcet Cornish tones: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280995217197
  15. That wus me innit. But I nicked the original from the DX site.
  16. your better off making your own the quality you will gain over a handycam is amazing if you get a good eliminator nm800ir £150 spend atleast £100 on a illuminator buy once buy right Or spend a bit more on the NVD and then you don't need to throw a lorra lorra light at the quarry. Especially given you only need it for an air rifle.
  17. I have used digital homebrew rigs with a JXD990 which flares up in places where there is more light in some places than others. I'm guessing that the reflected IR coming off the foliage at the lower left of the screen is somehow 'autogating' the iris of the N550. It seems to have got into a cycle of detecting too much, partially closing down the amount of light it's allowing in then recovering to do the same again - recurring. Sorry I don't have the techno speak to describe it better than that. I think I noticed an independant Illuminator moving across the scene? It might be a little bette
  18. I had too much Ir going on in this clip but if your camera is not as low light then it might work better for you. I had two roof mounted 940nm 10 degree Bosch IR floodlights in use. If there is any more than 1/8th moon I have found I don't need any IR at all but didn't think about turning it off for this clip:
  19. Dunno how this is progressing but its not like an outright refusal or unwarranted conditions. Yes it galls to let it happen, but an appeal is risking a future awkwardness with an FEO who seems, to be fair, to be working with what looks good for him in the current climate by approving the ticket in principal. Five years free of police interest might be the local/updated politically correct policy. By following the FEO's advice the applicant is displaying a better degree of common sense and temprement than would be seen by appealing over a paltry few months over the potential life of an FAC.
  20. Well sorted bigun. Hope the self important Prik gets the piff taken out of him for a while.
  21. As indicated above there's no benefit in thorough cleaning after every outing, I dry patch it sometimes just to remove the carbon dusting - but you have not suggested you clean every time so lets look at other reasons too. First on the list is a loose scope. I never knock mine yet last week the mounts loosened during a shooting trip. I started shooting high, adjusted and kept shooting ever higher. As I was driving along - rifle in the door~mirror cavity I heard a rattle and it had slid forwards on the rail with all four mounting screws loose. I'll never know how or why but I'd have thought
  22. After an excessive wait for a variation to centrefire and land clearance dispute I requested my licence back so that I could take my rifles out of the County for a shooting trip to Cornwall. I was advised by firearms reception that if I am stopped or checked that I should indicate my licence is "in for a variation" I pointed out that I had heard all sorts of grief about this issue on some forums and they sent it back after I also indicated I needed to buy some ammo as I had run out due to the lengthy dispute which eventually got me what I was asking for. The point I'm making is that not
  23. sounds a fair trade! (as long as its not the rugger pitch cause its empty! ) I'll take that offer in a few weeks Dan. I went out earlier this week and after copping a few bunnies I started shooting high. I eventually realised my scope mounts were loose so a quick re-zeroing session is in order before we go after some bunnies as I'm getting behind on orders for them.
  24. That's seriously respectable shooting Dan. I doubt I could match that but we could go compare.com. I'm out of .22 rounds - so how about your bullets on my permission lol?
