    Missed more hares on the lamp through the land being unsuitable that the hare getting up on the dog. Don't get me wrong, a hare can still kick uo the gears on the lamp and anyone who says different is inexperienced or a liar. Its just that they tend to make more mistakes and are not as a adapt at running at night. The utlimate daytime quarry for a lurcher, and a mediocre quarry on the lamp. Strictly pre ban obviously.

    Fence hopper. Have you ever fired a rifle? I run dogs and shoot, and can guarantee you if foxes were as easy to shoot as you make out, a keepers life would be a hell of a lot easier. You have no concept of windage, distance, drop not to mention personal capabilities. If I had £1 for every fox missed would be happy days. Must be great to form such a bold opinion having little or no knowledge of the subject. FTB

    Just to add all the good hare dogs I have witnessed had saluki blood somewhere in the makeup. Just not as evident as your big land dogs. FTB

    All this talk of good dogs will catch anywhere and adapt their running styles is pish. Certain crosses don't have the physical capability to catch up here, much the same as a beddy whippet wouldn't catch on the flats. Dogs for jobs, and in most parts up here my money would be on the collie whippet greyhound crosses. Keep your saluki greyhounds for land they have the chance to build up their stride. A smart dog up here will nip a hare out its seat in a rashy park here. Which to me can be every bit as satisfying as a 2 minute course.

    I said ground nesting birds. Waders, grouse ,partridge and suchlike. People don't set traps and spend a good proportion of their lives checking them for stoats for the good of their health. In certain circumstances they are vermin, and nobody enquired what the circumstances were before the man was slated for killing it. Where I live and work I regard them as vermin and they are killed on sight. Just my opinion. Cheers. FTB

    Buy a failed earthdog. 1 it will be ready to go 2 it will already be off some form of working lines 3 it will more than likely know how to use its nose and have the foundations of a worker 4 there are pleanty going about 5 it will be cheap if not free 6 it saves you buying a pup and rearing it 6 it saves you contributing to the problem with some existing breeds It makes perfect sense imo FTB

    Where are you bud. I know of a cracking beddy greyhound goin that is doing most quarry for sensible money. Its only problem is it cannot be kept around other dogs. Let me know if it is suitable and I will hook you up. FTB

    I know loads of keepers who let dog lads on(including my brother), their only gripe is when they go places they shouldn't and take game they shouldn't. There are loads of keepers who run dogs and dig, but saying that there are loads of old timers aswell who have a zero tolerance policy. I have a strong hatred of the dog lads vs shooters vibe that is aparent throughout this forum. As when shit hits the fan and were all still bickering it will be too late. FTB

    Although I agree with what you are saying mate, it is not just grouse that are affected. Louping ill and the effects of a large tick burden also affect all waders, moorland birds and small mammals. Louping ill is also carried by sheep and as such can have devastating effect on their livelyhood if it is found to be present. Work is being carried out by the organisation I work for and hopefully there will be a way of resolving the problem without letting it go too far
