what month do use start ferreting at for this season
max abell replied to lampingkid's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
we normaly start very end of august what with the rabbits breeding as early as december if we didn't start then we would never get round it all but in saying that as i am wrighting this we are awaiting the others to turn up because we have got a rabbiting job on today hopefully stick some pics up later not the ideal time of year what with the nettles etc but we don't get the weather seasons like we used to so ferreting only when there is a r in the month doesn't happen anymore else you would be ferreting in march/april etc and constantly digging your ferrets out I do know what your dad is -

ferret fell asleep during ferretin
max abell replied to borderhunter15's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Wow! 10 ferrets working at once....surely no warren is big enough to need 10 ferrets? how many of you are there to keep on top of that? I could be wrong but I'd have thought that number of ferrets in one warren would be blocking off escape routes and virtually guaranteeing kills underground? 10 ferrets in the massive burys we do on the south downs is nothing mate we have used up to 12 some of these burys are 5 or 6 hundred holes and the rabbits still hole hop untill you pressure them to leave and with just a couple of ferrets the rabbits would run them round all week we surround t -

Just gut them and take out the main intestines but leave the liver/kidneys/heart and lungs in then put it in like that i normaly freeze my rabbits like this this time of year to kill any fleas mites etc that they have on them then get out a frozen one the day before AS they say on blue peter LOL put it in a bucket with a bit of net curtain and a laky band over it to keep the flies off it untill i feed them at night same goes for pigeons etc

Been with the NGO since it was formed and the basc before that if you shoot daytime or lamp with rifles at night on your permissions its a must to have insurance no matter how safe a shot you are you can never be certain that you are not going to get a richochet off a flint etc or some member of the public has decided to set a one man tent up behind a bush we have had it happen anything can happen so as far as i'm concerned anyone that shoots without insurance is crazy not to have it £30 a year for £10,000.000 worh of cover A BARGAIN some landownwers insist on you being insured and i dont

Normaly keep about 10ish but have kept up to 15 they are kept in a very big feret court that consists of 2 big sheds with an aviary in between there is normaly 4 of us that ferret together so we can do the big warrens on the south downs and you need plenty of ferrets to move the bunnies out of them or they keep hole hoping We only keep this many because we have the room and the need for them they are all worked regulary during the season and have more than enough room to excercise out of season my advise would be to only keep what you have the room and need for and most importantly can loo

If you get them castrated they wont fight they will be fine together
-
yeh he will be fine but ferrets are sociable animals and like company try and introduce him to the others again in the winter when he is out of season and you will proberbly find they will live fine together through the winter but it would be advisable to take him back out when he comes back into breeding condition (his nuts will grow bigger) ie march/april then take him back out or he will start trying to s*ag anything that moves including castrated hobs not all ferrets are sociable but 99% are good luck with it mate

I don't think Nigel can be beaten on price and for service he is the best. As above nigel is the place for net making gear
-
100% agree we tried them but didn't find them any better than decent rings to be honest
-
As above as long as you can see all the way round the pile of rubble there is no reason why you should loose any ferrets but digging is out the question if you get the chance watch the ed cook and mick mansbridge dvd where they clear a quarry they do a pile of rubble on that GOOD LUCK with it mate
