Have you become a victim to "Tacti-cool"?
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I love the Battle mug, just genius! -
what fox call do you use?
danebrewer10 replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I use my hand- easy to use, plus it dosen't cost me anything, I can vary the volume, and pitch easily, so in all a very versatile call! though it probably does pay to have one or two different ones in case the foxes get wise to it... Cheers DB -
Hi all, I thought I might pose this fun question, I am a largely "traditional" shooter, I like wood and blue, but nothing beats stainless and synthetic for dependability and durability. However, I see everywhere, the worrying trend that everything is becoming "tactical", or "tacti-cool" http://www.mycity-military.com/imgs/65870_88675974_tacticoolAR15.jpg http://www.militaryimages.net/photopost/data/642/TactiCool.JPGas someone on youtube put it, it seem that this phenomenon is bigger in the states, where it seems your social standing is measured by how many picatinny rails and accessorie

nope, dosen't do it for me, if you need to dial in a correction to your scope, you're shooting too far, which IMO is irresponsible as a sportsman the leupold custom shop does turret engraving to your spec, as well as zeiss which have about 8 different turrets for a close match to most common loads and calibers. but like I say, shooting too far is irresponsible, i has said the same thing on many a youtube vid and people just don't get it, anyhowm there's my two pence worth. Cheers DB and another thing, IMO, dialling in a target is target shooting on live animals, not hunting... If you'

New Anschutz 1770 .223
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well a lot of folk have Sako rifles and they're pretty darn pricey now, RRP for the wood/blue model is £1445 synthetic/stainless is £1575, for the Tikka synthetic/stainless £950, I can't see the ANschutz being that far off the Sako. I like to have pride of ownership as well, hence why I might be tempted to spend a bit more on a gun that I need to, buying a beretta instead of a lanber or a Steyr or Sako over a Tikka or CZ, also it's nice to have something a little different from the norm, having said that CZ do make some good looking guns in the Centerfire line of things... Regarding special shotgun case
danebrewer10 replied to neon854's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
52.5 cm is a short barrel. What do you hunt with it? 20 inches? not that short, seeing as most barrels seem to be around 22" i'd say it'd be a good length for work in an enclosed high seat, from a vehicle, or pushing through vegetation or under low branches -
good sounds position, might give that a go tomorrow. My shooting sticks (standing) are lengths of straight green hazel with a bit of pushbike inner tube holding them together like a rubber band plus what I did was to put a bit of nylon bar in the ends of the tube in the ground so they didn't fill up with mud, and slit a section of garden hose open and put if over the section supporting the rifle so the bumps on the sticks don't damage the woodwork...

Ha ha, that sounds like a Good idea, I get the impression that you're more confused now than when you started off! ATB DB

Yknow I was going to say the same thing- heavier bullets than the HMR, better terminal ballistics on foxes I would have thought, and equally suitable for bunnies... as for the frangible nature of ballistic tipped bullets, try a copper jacketed soft nose or something like that I think federal make something along those lines
-
gotta say that unless you're forced to use these by legislation I wouldn't bother, a lighter bullet than the already light 17gn lead BT can only mean more wind drift... plus lower SD and BC than the 17gn bullet.... bad deal I say, unless like I say you're froced to use them like in some areas of the US and i think SSSI's and wetlands in Scotland..... I might possibly be interested if they came up with a copper bullet like the Barnes

New Anschutz 1770 .223
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
sorry mate can't help you there, I've only got the Annie 1517! -
I reckon that although the rimmy will probably be lighter unless you have a more full size rifle with a heavy barrel like the Anschutz 64 or 1700 series, but I think I shoot more accurately with a rimmy than with my air rifle, because no matter how good you are, in general sportsman terms, discounting BR (waste of time?)and 1000yd shooting gods, we all wobble slightly, so as you wobble you're moving the barrel, so if your cross hair is over the target and you pull the trigger, the .22 pellet is going to spend longer in the same length barrel compared to a .17HMR so the air rifle is doing ...wh

Regarding special shotgun case
danebrewer10 replied to neon854's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Thank you.. But I was actually not thinking of a hard case but rather a slip or bag, so to speak.. On the first link to Uttings with the napier gear there are soft bags about halfway down.... -
there's a lot of questions on here like yours, Leuopld make some good optics and at some pretty reasonable prices, I haven't ever looked through one, but from reviews, theire edge to edge clarity isn't quite as good neither is their sharpness or ligh transmission compared to european glass- you could try the 7x50- slightly smaller or for £939 from Uttings you could have yourself an S&B 3-12x50 or 3-12x44, or a swaroPV3-12x50 for slightly less, but am I right in thinking you don't wanot to spend that much? well you could do a lot worse than a fixed 7x50 from S&B- (zeiss make one as wel

Regarding special shotgun case
danebrewer10 replied to neon854's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I think they'd be called a traveling case, some people make the hard type, leather covered and lined with velvet, but here's a couple of soft type cases from Napier HERE not too cheap but then good things never are, should do the trick! Or this at the Sportsman Gun center- HERE Cheers DB -
Hi all, as all of you will know, the .17 HMR dosen't have very big magazines**, compared to the .22LR, so I was wondering, why can't they produce a staggered model like many CF rifles? the .303 British is a rimmed cartridge and that feeds fine from the Lee Enfield so why hasn't anyone thought of this before? (plus the .220 swift though semi rimmed feeds from a rem 700 action..) or is it not possible? 'cause if it is then you could probably have a 75%greater capacity in a staggered mag compared to a single stack mag... any thoughts? Cheers DB **apart from the Ruger rimfires....

Hi all, I'm not sure if you're aware, but Anschutz has produced a new .223 rifle (their first CF) called the 1770, just a post to ask everyones opinion on it, I reckon in its jagdmatch stock configuration it'll be great, possibly a tad heavy at 8lbs+ but not too bad (in the Jagdmatch configuration)... what do you all think? the link to the Anschutz page is HERE Sooo, there are the pics, Like I say I think it's great, with Anschutz one-hole accuracy and quality as standard, if it's not too expensive, it could be a real winner! Just hope it'll be available in a deer lega

Hi all, has anyone noticed the new Anschutz? I don't believe we'll get it in this country untill quite a bit later, but I really like the look of it especially in the DJV/Jagdmatch stock configuration anschutz quality and accuracy comes as standard... I'd take that any day over a costom rem 700... anyways here's the LINK to the Anschutz product page and some pics below Like I say, I'd love it in the jagdmatch stock, possibly a tad heavy at over 8 lbs... but I could probably live with that.... Just hope it'll be available in deer legal calibers (other than munties and C

Wow 15 years?? i'm well impressed, i can't imagine he wears them much then, I have had a pair of muck boots for about 5 years, and they are really good and warm, you don't get as sweaty as you do with rubber wellies, AAAND they are only about £ which is toms cheaper than a pair of Le Chams!! don't go for the avon style like I had first time round, as the soles are a blown rubber and wear down pretty quickly. I now have a pair of the Torray boots and so far they seem to be doing well, the grip on slimy clay is pretty good, super warm in the snow, or the Esk boots might be better for you if you

I clean my HMR every time out, I use alternate bronze brush and patch though I don't use a Jag because I haven't seen one of the spear type ones and the loop type are just shit, my experience is that they are very fussy on the thickness of material you put on the jag- too much or too thick and you can't even consider putting in down the bore without it getting stuck, a tiny bit less and it literally falls through the bore. I cut rifle clean into 2" or 2 1/4" lengths and then cut those lengthways into about 5 strips, I then wrap them in a spiral around the brush, just touching, and with a cot

new BRNO BO98 - mauser 98
danebrewer10 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
no problem, I think the push feed/CRF debate is much like the AK 47/AR debate, each side has it's fighters who think theirs is the only option. how much does the bolt wobble at it's fully retracted position, I haven't had the opportunity to handle an original mauser.... cheers DB -
new BRNO BO98 - mauser 98
danebrewer10 replied to harrygrey382's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think the mauser is a great design, obviously, as it has stood the test of time and is still being produced, but the controlled round feed and full length extractor is overrated IMO, there is this opinion that if you don't have a CRF rifle hunting dangerous game or in law enforcement you will die, this is simply not the case, the US army has done fine with their M24, based on a push feed rem 700 and that has been doing the business for donkeys years likewise the rifle you always see in films is the rem 700. having a proper mauser action could be a cool talking point, but unless you have had -
Transporting Firearms in Vehicles
danebrewer10 replied to Urban Fox Control London's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have a cable inside a flexible rubber tube that I put round the trigger guard, out of the end of the case and around the pillars holding the rear seats in place, my boot is just wide enough to put the case in I can then just put a glove, hat, coat or whatever to cover the padlock on the front seat, so there's absolutely no evidence that there is a firearm in the car, I only do this if I need to pop in somewhere coming back from shooting, otherwise, if I'm not going to be leaving the car untended I'll just put the case behind the seats. I have the A7 reticle on my 6x42 and it covers about 1" or 3/4" at 100m and that's fine for head shooting bunnies, so at 8x even at 200m on a fox that would be ok as well, if i had the rifle to do it, i recon 6x is all you would need- Richard Prior (roe deer stalker extraodinaire) only uses a fixed 4x power scope! the 4A reticle i don't think is too much cop because the "gap where the fine reticle is is a bit small ie the heavy posts are too long but might be better in very low light. also there is no difference between the hungarian and german models apart from the fact that the hungarian

I'm not too bothered either way, laminate stocks do look good and feel better than some of the synthetic stocks, but stocks from manufacturers like McMillan, H-S Precision B&C, etc are IMO a better choice as they would probably be lighter, and just as strong... DB
