Bedlington Whippet Pup Bought from advert on here
inan replied to sidebyside's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Nice head on it,would like to see the pup standing ,all the best with it. -
Ive had a few of these, good dogs for most work, fast enough for hares but all lacked the stay for a long run on big land.
-
I start all my pups retreiving in a narrow space, like a hall way,or as you have on the video ,a passageway ,it stops them going any where but back to you doesnt it?Well done with your pup,he looks a nice fella ,all the best for the future.

Why dont you see if Rebbecca Loos is busy
-
A swift rap on the head was needed there,or a blade in the neck,it looked a big fella ,and the dog never came offit but I dont like to see protacted struggles to the death, its a different culture ,and they may view things differently, the other two dogs didnt look too keen did they?.

That grounds definitely to hard to run on
-
Interesting post and a nice looking pup,the grounds getting too hard down here in Kentsoon have to stop bushing unless it rains.

I think you can see this if you look at videos of the Forley Cup,you can see dogs like Sniper,a fine animal, and Lucky,Sankeys Blondie, theyknow they have time ,you rarely see them strike and miss, they arent banging a hare all over the place ,driving it along, they control their quarry, keeping in striking distance waiting for the right moment, well thats how I see it anyway,I like to watch both styles ,the laid back dog ,and the dynamicfella who gets in there banging them about ,Don Southerd had some of these types fast ,with a good strike very fit and could stay pretty well for fast dogstwo dog

Good question,my uncle had a collie cross just after the 2nd war that "fenced "hares, cutting them off from cover, but all the recent dogs that come to mind had a preponderance of Saluki blood in them,my own Dog out of Lucky is a good "goalkeeper",like his father, a dog that was known for this ,and threw it in some of his pups was January Jack,Joe the father of Lucky was another. inan I have saluki lurchers , mine dont box hares , more up and at them pushing them around , Iv seen a good few dogs out of courfeilds Joe and they all seem to have that style of running , do you thi

GETTING YOUR DOGS FITT
inan replied to Cheshire Poacher's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Between 6 and 4 weeks before the season starts start the dog on bike work, short distances at first ,give the dogs feet time to harden up ,gradually increase the distance and reduce the time, mix in about an hours free running a day ,bushing or W H Y,and your dog should be ready to rumble .A good rub down/brush,is very beneficial as well as it stimulates the muscles and blood cells.a positive side effect of all this is that of course you get fit as well ,so you dont notice those long night hours lamping. -
A course of Methnine -90 tablets,2 0r 3 a day for between 4 to 6 weeks should sort out brittlenails,,also put the dog on a calcium supplement, this will strengthen the nail,1 to 2 mg of Biotin dailyin the grub will help ,you can get this from Holland and Barratt, for nail; bed infection ,Padaid Quick heal is good, its effective for pulled nails too, keep the dogs bedding clean to minimise infection and obviously the dogs feet too,Good Luck .Inan.

inan the class with three dogs in was it under 23" rough dog?? Yes I beleive it was ,the judge wasnt George Newton, hes a Dartford lurcher man ,but George Saunders ,from Dover way, hes been around a few years.
-
il be around the lurcher ring and probably the beer tent  ill have my dog in tow here she is I thought the entry£9 was a bit steep, especially as I paid for Magwitch as well,,they dont seem to have widened the range of stalls at all, though there were a few guns this year, the Lurcher ring looked a bit pathetic, with one class having only three entries, well thats one way to get a rosette I suppose,I felt a bit sorry for old George Newton the Lurcher judgehe looked a bit pissed off,we didnt stay too long at the ring ,the wind was a bit too cold for an old un like me,I was glad

Ive done a fair bit of judging, and imo a dog with scars, shouldnt be penalised ,neither should he be rewarded ,he might just be a clumsy sod,as long as the marks on the dog dont in any way affect its working ability there is no problem,as to why some one would travel a great distance to buy a pup from a well known show winner ,I think it would be prudent of me to refrain from commenting, all you should be able to guarantee from such a dog is its general confirmation,in the field its "Handsome is as Handsome does "isnt it?

I was out with a well known Lurcher Coursing Club some years ago,one of the dogs running was a huge black and white bull cross, who showed surprising agility and speed,I beleive he weighed close on 100pounds,the owner told me he had taken red deer with it,and another fella backed him up,the man is a well known coursing man from Liverpool,a genuine bloke,so I would beleive him.

lets have the truth how long have you been into runing dogs
inan replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Had my first lurcher a t the age of 21 his name was Butch and he cost £12 got him from a bloke in Dartford Kent who was known as Caveman,Butch was a Collie /Saluki xGrey,a very fast athletic dog ,unfortuanately he succombed to Parvo at the tender age of 18 months,no one knew much about the new disease,Cat vaccine was just being tried as an antidote, too late for my boy. Ive had running dogs for 37years,in my 20s and 30s ,I thought I knew quite a bit about them, now Im 58,Im amazed how much I can and do still learn, its been a long journey ,but Im glad I bought a ticket! -
I had a lurcher,Butch,he caught a budgie,he was in his bed under the sink,my mother could here it but couldnt work out where the noise was coming from, finally we looked at the dog ,and his tail began to wag very slowly,a sure sign something was up we called him out and the budgie was underneath him unharmed,,gave it to a neighbour.Out lamping one night Charley my old dog ran the beam came back in his mouthwas a little owl ,I released it unharmed,Sonny another dog of mine caught a squirrel in a country park and brought it back ,when I tried to take it from him I realised it had bitten right t

He is long gone to his rest now,he was a collie cross 3/4Greyx1/4Border,took a lot of stuff with that old fella.he had a soft mouth like a spaniel but took Foxes no problem,I used him to the gun as well,he had a great nose, and was very quick.I was just trying to get a pic up,Magwitch was giving me a step by step via the phone.
