Wow he sounds like a hardy dog! My neighbour had a springer (I sorta took her on though) a few years back and she would never show pain either, really happy go lucky. Hope your dog will be ok x

I'd imagine crows have done it. Also possibly other foxes, a few rats might give a nibble too. But the main one would probably be crows/rooks

Cool, cheers for the answers

Right... Well it used to be common... So I'm guessing no then?

Just wondering if its legal to hunt rabbits/pigeons on common land?

Haha, thats cool. I've heard of some farm guardian dogs actually, when mostly let think for themselves, turn into quite good hunters of mice and rabbits etc. for their own personal food supplies! -
hi anyone worked a doberman x lurcher
Back Stabbath replied to wrowmon's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Sam, Dobes are fairly intelligent? They are VERY intelligent! Good luck with these pups, if I was in the position to take one I certainly would. Anything that they may possibly lack in body suitability they will deffo make up for in brain power. Dobes are very very crafty. Like I've mentioned on here before, I heard of a Doberman/GSD who used to go into a field of cattle and chase hares into the herd to trap them and catch them. I imagine a doberman would be an excellent dog for bigger game. A big working bloodline one for game like pigs, couldn't go wrong there. Anyway I hope the -

Ha, thats great. I have a doberman. He's very keen but not really agile enough, but I'd say he might be better on more open terrain than what I have to work with. Also he's a big European working line lad, a lot of the english line dobes are skinny and that would probably account some for that dobes hunting ability. The tail I believe makes a difference, its a bit of a pain in the hole Murdock being docked, I would much prefer a tail on him, one of the reasons being quick turning. I also talked to a man at a show once, he came up to us when me and Murdock had won and complimented us and said -

Right, cool. I would imagine speed as you said, and perhaps the actual 'kill instinct' would be possible problems. -

Ah right, cheers for the reply. I too have heard of collies being used before but never actually from a first hand source. -
Just wondering. Or maybe any other pure bred dog, as opposed to a lurcher. Cheers

ANYONE FEED LURCHERS RAW EGGS?
Back Stabbath replied to bunnyhare123's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Raw eggs are great for dogs. They are about 90% high biological value protein, so yes, a great source of protein. Keep a dogs diet varied for best results, with protein coming from many sources such as muscle meat, organ meat (important, but making up no more that 15% of dogs diet), some fish, eggs and cottage cheese. Raw bones are v. important too, as are finely ground vegetables, stuff like carrots and dark green leafy veg being most valuable. Keep milk to a minimum or not at all UNLESS its raw, unpasteurised milk. Dogs seem to do a lot better on raw milk, having positive effects on heal -

Another good days rough shooting

Thank you mother earth! -
Possibly to get the dogs attention. I don't have lurchers at the moment but I sometimes let my Dobe chase a lamp beam and I do that to get his drive up again if he seems to be getting tired or losing interest
-
They are naturally protective. Can be a great family dog in the right hands (not implying they are aggressive which they should not be) but can be very energetic, need lots of stimulation and excersise, and often have quite a high drive. They are also very very intelligent. If you are expecting one to be like the average show bred German Shepherd who is happy to lay about on the couch and do the odd bit of playing, be prepared for a shock. They will get very bored and destructive if they don't get lots of exersise and things to do. Most Malinois are from working lines, which is great in terms

Yeah the Derren Brown thing seemed to just be milking the fact it was 3d, the actual content was bollox.

Most of my friends wouldn't be into hunting, but wouldn't be against it either (course we all were big against hunting when we were kids! ) I have some hunt inclined friends too, and one kinda anti hunting, but she wouldn't make an argument out of it, she kinda doesn't really understand it, like she asked me how do you know you won't catch something from eating a wild rabbit... So I explain it and justify it if she asks. I can understand people not wanting to kill cute things like rabbits, or any creature for that reason, some people just aren't naturally hunters. Like my mother for instance

It seems to me that if you want any justice, you have to do it yourself. Can't trust charities, can't usually trust police or courts to do justice. Just look at how many murderers, rapists etc. get off scot free or with very little time. Hey I'm not supporting these organisations but the IRA and the Mafia in both Italy and America had ways of dealing with troublemakers. That sort of thing is on my mind at the moment because someone I know went to the rescue of his cousin who was being beaten up by 4 foreigners for no reason, when they turned on him and put him in intensive care. Life support m

Haha, thats a good one alright

Yep, she is seeing herself as equal or higher than your son. You need to correct this behaviour whenever you catch her at it. But also, your son should not play rough and tumble type games or lie on the floor with the dog, in fact dont even let him sit on the floor with her at this stage. Avoid tug games also, unless you have a strong 'let go' command and your son "wins" every game. That is, he decides when the game is over and takes the toy, rather than letting go of the toy when he gets bored so and leaving it with the dog. Its easy you taking charge and dominating her, but really your son n

Hmm, depends on the dog and how good of a trainer you are I suppose! I have known a half Doberman half GSD to be a brilliant hare dog, running hares into herds of cattle to corner them and catch them! lol. And Dobermans as gundogs. But that just shows Dobermans versatility I spose. I don't know mate to be honest!

Hi mate I don't have first hand experience of Vizslas I'm afraid, and I wouldn't be able to tell you much about that type of hunting. However for what its worth, if you're looking for a calmer and more manageable dog with your wife and 3 yr old I'd recommend the lurcher. Not sure about Hungarian dogs, but working line German breeds (eg. Dobes, Weims etc.) tend to be quite a hand full, as they are very intelligent and can be (especially in the case of working line Dobes) quite stubborn. I'm guessing Hungarian dogs would be of a similar type, they breed no nonsense (and quality imo) type dog
