Not posted any thread for a while, but as the season draws closer, my mind is starting to get switched on to the fact that within 5-6 weeks the season will be in full swing. This makes me think of the land I work, the animals I use, and in general rabbiting. More to the point, what life could have been like in the old days, life before mixi, vehicles, and coping with more rabbits than you could possibly deal with. Todays scene is probably far removed from what the old boys encountered. My old man tells me the stories of the old warreners, (In the dales), pre war years, with there huts on t

No it will be fine. Give it a chance.

Its not too old at all to start a ferret, may take it a while to suss things out, but i think that a ferret at 3 yrs old is at its best.

Moley has some piccies of some serious bags. ask him, exceed anything me and the old feller has hit.

She might have had a phantom, makes them like that, has the fur gone dull and has she gone out of season?

Blind, Deaf, Club foot, Half tail,Buck toothed are all things some people would hold against a ferret as a worker, also bieng an Albino, Polecat, Silver, Sandy, also sway people's judgements. I would not be concerned if a ferret had every disfigurement in the book, and was any colour of pelt, as long as it showed the will to do what nature asked it to do, and was not in any pain, it will always have a place in my camp. Nice to see so many folk value an animal on what could be ability rather than looks.

alright brimmer mate. we wont be doing any more ferreting now until the season starts.i took the ferret out with us on our lat trip out just to get a run or two for the pup which he got .the ferret was put back in the box and back in the van the soon as that job was done.we got a good few half grown rabbits with the gun as the bigguns were scarce on the groundbut saying that there was a shed load of really small squeakers on the ground so by the looks of things they are still having young.in all honestyi think the woman was just pleased to have found a couple of lads willing to try and get he

Pressure to the scissors of the jaw from the thumb and index finger of the other hand for me. They dont like it, but it gets results quick and some realise quickly its not worth it.

Not really impressed to be honest, give them till September (Back half of September) and i'd say well done. Maybee it's just me pal, but i cannot see a valid point for ferreting at this time of year. What joy did you get from seeing your ferret come up covered in blood, knowing there's bodies down there rotting away for nothing? Put them on rats if you are bored, save your sport for season.

Good news on the new land Col, sure it will produce plenty. Please don't be pushed into 'doing your bit' before the season starts. As a few will know, i think there's no need to put a ferret underground out of season, the rifle is the best way to slim things down if it has to be done, hitting the half to threequarter grown rabbits, leaving the fully grown, not leaving nests to starve to death underground with no milk. A pup won't notice 8 weeks until it starts mate.

Spot on. I have never had any trouble, the only problem I have noticed is that they will not moult till they come out of season. TC The moulting stage is a thing that the jills go through after birth, it comes from the kits drawing on all the jills resource, leaving them a little gaunt, hence the moult, even the phantoms end up this way. (at least the phantoms are out of season!). The rest of my tribe are in the moult now, getting there winter coats ready for the northern season! (Hobs). Bring it on, 10 weeks and counting!

Must admit i look after my animals to the point of huge vet bills, but i have never got my jills jabbed or taken out of season, never once resulting in any harm coming to them. The best get bred when required, the rest go through the swelled stage no problem. Is some kind of hysteria bieng drummed up about taking them out of season? Keep them clean, and in good shape, and from my perspective, you don't need all the hype. Anyone thats happy with what they do, then keep doing it, but i'm sure half of the shoite is just a crock of shoite.

In fact maybee Max, from what i can see in your post, the guy you took out could probably point you in a direction you had not considered before, and one well worth trying out. Maybee he understands what the animals are doing below ground, and is reacting to this, rather than waiting for the aftermath.

they won't drown in a shallow bowl, if they do then maybee it was just one of those things that nature intended.

Nice post, topic right up my alley! If the ferret is on the quarry and not moving them you can be digging in as little as 1 minute, why wait until it has killed and moved on to the next? If you know your animals, then don't wait for 45 mins for a blooded ferret to emerge after its nailed 3 or 4 bunnies, all left to rot down there, nothing spoils burries more than corpses rotting away down there. If your on deep warrens then use the jills and nets to bolt, and give them a little time to work, they are not in the same league as a medium sized hob on easy warrens. No need to be 'Afraid Of Th

Think what people have to look at is the animal fit and well? Personally think the dried food is much of a muchness to be honest, would keep a dog ok, and a crow in a trap alive. As diets go, it's lacking but keeps animals going. Won't use it myself TBH, but children are fed less well balanced diets daily. You are what you eat at the end of the day.

Come on admit it! You shaved them like on the adult films!

There about 3 weeks now and are still very small compared to the others that are the same age they dont seem to be developing that well i think 11 is a bit too much for her so i will even things up within the days to come to see how that goes. Worth a try, it will give the remaining one's from the litter a stronger chance, but remember they will be starting to eat solids around now, so the meat may be the savior at this point in time.

I see you say you have been giving the lad milk? Did you give it milk before it got ill? Have made this mistake in the past, never again. Milk going bad mixed with the food knocked a pair of mine off there feet within a day, dead within 2 days. Milk, Summer and ferrets don't mix unfortunately. Hope yours pulls through mate.

How old are the kits from the jill that cannot cope? Leaving alone and do not disturb is a good rule untill they are weaned. (4-5 weeks.) Some jills will tolerate people, but even looking in the bed chamber is enough to scramble some.

I am a full time pest controller i make my living removing unwanted pests be that rabbits, fleas, cockroaches, rats, mice, wasps etc. Unsavoury as some people may find it i am paid to do a job and i do it as quickly and humanely as i posibly can. I run a trap line all year round on a golf course contract and remove in excess of 2000 rabbits each year, Cage traps mostly.....this combined with night time shooting keeps the rabbits under control. Clients pay me to do a job.....and if that includes removing young rabbits then so be it........! Thanks for that Rolfe.

Like Stubby says, I am one of the people who does not agree with the summer sport, never had and never will. I think it sets a bad example for hunting to be honest, and have to say puts me off clicking on the site. I understand fully that it has to be done in some cases, but does it need making public? Forgive me if i don't offer a positive comment to the post, but could you explain your situation on why you have to do it? Is it your Job on the estate? Pest controller and there's a wage for doing it? Bounty on the heads? Your job is on the line if they are not shifted? I'm not after any so

Nice to see the different ages together in the last pic, there must be 2 weeks between them! Tried it several times but always ended the same way. Hope the dogs have shook of the the knocks and stitches Keeps.

Sounds like a good effort, me old feller used to spend all day as a kid with his mates rabbiting the local area, they used to be happy with one, made up if they got two, and if they got three or a hare they were gods in the dog world. You can only catch whats there, bigger numbers do help test your animals and condition and experience them, but stay keen and i'm sure in a few years you'll be posting you've had 70 in a day!

Great to see the two mothers at ease, never had that yet Keeps.
