I once had a redtail that was left in seclusion aviary until February. He took food on day ten, I was starting to get a bit concerned lol.

Some cracking flights today. He's starting to show some style. A nice big buck rabbit. #7

Very high winds and heavy showers today, testing conditions. His first double in the bag. #6.

Popped out for a quick one. The dog had to work really hard to shift this one out of thick gorse. Kill 3.

Hi Kev, do you have dogs at home? If so you want to man her and have your dog out when you feed/ fly her. At the moment if she's not killing she is just learning what is and isn't on the menu. A lot of Harris's hawks aren't good with dogs unless brought up with them around, as their main predator in the wild is the Coyote.

Been flying him for a few day's now and introduced to the dragged dead rabbit. I think he likes it, lol!

On the LR 41 you must sent a grid reference date and time of each kill, this only applies as part of the falconry license as you are only granted a certain number of birds to kill. This doesn't apply to the general license. Its all a load of bollox to keep people in jobs, totally unnecessary.

To my knowledge you don't need a license to take ground game with a trained bop. This entire system is laughable. I had the A41 for gulls and corvids, it took them almost all season to grant my license. When I kept ringing asking what the hold up was I was told my boss can't decide how many birds to let you have. When I was finally granted the license almost at the end of the season, I had to report back every single kill with date ,time and grid reference. Also I said that the birds were causing a nuisance on my permission, I was then told that you cannot apply for a falconry license to deal

Thanks! I will keep you posted. I have flown a few redtails over the years, great birds on squirrels. I know two people flying males from this pairing and one flying a female, they are all pleased with them, having the good traits of the Harris with the extra grunt of the redtail. Hopefully should make a nice all rounder. This one definitely has the stubbornness of a redtail, lol.

No different to manning any other hawk!

You'd be surprised the female that I moulted out last season had virtually no full tail feathers when I bought her. I turned her loose in the aviary and she used to bounce off the walls now and then. It makes you cringe, but she managed a nice clean moult. I think when the feathers have done a year they then become more dried out and brittle, and are more prone to break. The new growth will be more supple and flexible.
