  5. surely by chastising the dog for putting his head down a hole to mark you are sending him the message that it is wrong and you dont want it doing this thus ending up with a non marking dog as the dog can understand what you want it to do .... dog goes to hole to sniff for rabbits you chastise everytime it does this ... result non marking dog .... and what about when the weather is blowing a gale and the dog needs to put his head into the hole to pinpoint the rabbits scent ??? at the end of the day each dog has its own uniqe way of marking whether its scratching at the holes head in or just a p
  6. JUCKLER how do you teach a dog NOT to stick his head in a whole when he is marking ????? and why get rid of a perfectly good working ferret after a few seasons and get young inexperienced ones in ?????? there is no way i would swap my workers for youngsters ...........
  7. dog food has nothing in the way of nutrients for a ferret and is nearly as bad as feeding bread and milk ... tripe is made up of mostly water and isnt much better if you cant feed carcass and cant find ferret food then feed cat complete meal .... much higher in protein and better for the ferret ...........
  8. it was very dead mate ........ she is a first cross collie grey .........
  9. i decided to introduce the pup to the air rifle today because as an all round mooching dog i will expect her to accompany me on my shooting forays and retrieve any game shot whether it be fur or feather. i particularly wanted her to retrieve a small corvid as i find that out of all the game a dog has to retrieve the corvid family is the least palatable to a dog maybe its the dusty feathers ??? it was a very windy start to the morning and there wasnt a lot about except for the numerouse rabbits that bounded straight for home as we crunched through the fallen leaves in the wood, just as i t

  13. I DID THIS LAST WINTER ... HERE YOU GO HAVE A READ ................. I just thought that I would put this up with the big freeze on the way and according to the weather people this is going to be the worst winter on record …. I did a similar thing in the summer with regards to heat injurys … some of it may be teaching you to suck eggs but it may be of use to the new lads to the game … firstly lets remember that dogs can get hypothermic … this happens when a dog’s body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit …. Elderly or very young dogs are sometimes unable to regulate t
  14. never mind about all these jokes what about the weather ... its freezing here .. still its warmer than ipswich its -5 there ............
  15. had he just finished with her mam in that pic .............
  16. miles apart mate i tried the beardie cross and although her prey drive was awsum and her obedience above average she just didnt have the qualitys i like that you get from a working border parent ... if the dog had come from a working background (on the hills with sheep) then things may have been different ... perhaps thats the problem with most beardie crosses they have lost the working drive that makes a good lurcher ...........
  17. nothing on there is a snide dig at you if i had something to say to you believe me i will say it and to your face if we ever met (as others off these sites have found out ) .... as i have said on these sites countless times i can never get accross what i am trying to say properly and sometimes it comes accross as being a bit harsh or people take it the wrong way ... have a re read of what i have said again and try and see it for what it was ... as i have said if i wanted to say something to you ... you will know otherwise just try and read around my poor posting and try to see where i am com
  18. I don't think 13 months is too old to introduce a dog to the nets, in fact there is a line of thought that says leave a dog to be a puppy until you start with the 'heavy' training. What happens if you put a board across your doorway and call the dog - does it run straight into it? Obviously not, because somewhere in it's life it would have learnt to jump over it! The same will be said for the net, it will soon learn to avoid it. As for what it will do with the rabbits in the net then it's pretty much in line with what it does with them out of the net (on the lamp); does it hold them, retri
  19. i have always started my pups as soon as i can as i find they soak a lot more in when they are young and are easyer to control ... when you leave them untill they are 6 months plus i find they are very hyper and want to chase and grab everything in site then training becomes a chore ... start them young when they dont really know what chasing is and when the penny drops that they can run and catch they do it in a very matter of fact way and are nice and calm about the whole afair .... but its each to his own ...........
  20. there are always trials and tribulations when first starting youngsters mate but it is down to us as the teachers to keep a cool head and guide them through as best we can .........
  21. very nice looking net there and plenty of bag aswell ............
  22. no mate i have trained her not to ........
  23. well my first cross collie grey bitch is just a shade over 4 months now and her obedience and and recall are spot on .... she has been out with the ferrets and nets a good few times and she is nice and steady and responding well to commands ... she is just starting to mark and getting a rough idea of what the game is all about ..... so i decided that this morning would be stage 2 of her apprenticeship in the art of being an all round mooching and rabbiting dog and decided to introduce her to the art of longnetting ..... it was a grey old start to the day and very misty but the weather
  24. hang on fellas who actually said they were definately ferreting rabbits for greyhound trainers ????? the antis would have a field day reading this as you lot are now stating that greyhound trainers buy live rabbits for their dogs ...... use some common sense lads .............
