Committee is a great idea, hunting needs to be publicised over time in a positive light. Take school kids out to see the hounds working a trail, visit schools with ferreting dogs. Teach the benefits of controlling the numbers of pests in a humane way. Have hunters on the news and question time type programmes showing well trained, well behaved dogs working. All fieldports need one concerted unified campaing, hunting with dogs, hounds, coursing, fishermen, falconry, shooting all need to get together and promote responsible hunting show the lacs and anti's interupting legal hunts and the damage

Exactly and educating these people is something that is going to take time and unity! Not some rushed, half arsed effort and money. Hunters need to be in this for a the long haul and do it properly, with marches, school vists, and a prolonged media campaign showing the benefits and real value of real hunters! This particular battle will be won or lost educating the next generation and the undecided majority! Not rushing into a vote in parliment which at this time in my opinion would be lost.

Seems to me that running to getting a repeal without thinking of the possible ramifications is exactly that....clambering for scraps thrown from the table the mp's so that they get what they want...ie back in parliament.
-
There again life's a game of chance so only time will tell.

What I am trying to get across is yes we could get the ban repealed and be happy and hunters can carry on as they have and live happily ever after, OR the publicity such a campaign would generate could have the opposite effect and things would be a lot, lot worse and if that was to happen then God help everybody who enjoys all fieldsports.

I agree 100% with what you are saying. BUT and its a big but, as has been said, some of the things posted on Facebook etc are a toal embarrassment and despite being totally against what most decent hunters believe in, they are still 'hunting' and will be labelled as such. And that could be enough to sound the death knell for much more than hunting with hounds.

Posts like that are exactly what I'm talking about when I say anti's will pick up on anything to discredit hunters as skinhead idiots with no respect or care for anyone other than themselves lurcher man. And to be honest no mp is gonna risk their own neck for people making those comments.
-
As others have stated Hunting with dogs is still legal as it stands so all is not lost, and the stakes would be high if this does go to a vote! That's not to say that it's not a risk worth taking, but you have to pick your battles and make sure that you are in the best position possible before making your move. At the moment I'm not 100% convinced that this is the best time.

Just to clarify what I was saying in earlier posts is not that hunters should give up. What I was trying to get across is that if there is a bid by the government to repeal hunting then there is presumably going to be a lot of coverage in the media about hunting, some good and positive but a lot of negative also. Anti's will be trawling Facebook, Twitter and sites such as this for any images/videos that could aid their cause. Pictures of heavily scarred dogs/dead game/or hunting itself would be like hitting the jackpot and would not do hunters any favours once the papers get hold of them. It c

Good topic anyway!??

Hopefully I'm completely wrong and just a cynical grumpy b*****d! Just what I've come to expect from these so called 'leaders'.

There is no way on gods green earth every Tory would vote yes to lifting any ban. At the end of the day mp's for the most part just say what the majority want to hear, and if unfortunately the majority in that particular constituency don't want hunting legalised, then unfortunately that is the route they will go. Sorry for being cynical but the powers thAt be are in this for one reason and that is pier, and until there is a bigger appetite for change amonst the majority(which hunters are not) that won't change. In my opinion anyway ?

England and Wales cocker ?

I know what your saying, and it's a sad reflection of the way this country treats it's working class. However I do think hunters have a fairly low profile at the moment (in a lot of places, not all) it may not be the worst thing that working dogs doesnt get put under the microscope again. The grass is always greener, and in my opinion perhaps it's better that hunters/ hunting dogs are not the focus of the mainstream media for now. It's not ideal, and I do feel sorry for coursing boys and boys working hounds etc. however things could be a lot worse if hunting is put back in the limelight!! As I

Imo the ban will never be lifted. There would be uproar from anti's, lots of bad publicity etc. And tbh as controversial as it sounds, it maybe a good thing. those who are committed and serious willl carry on regardless, the ban stops a lot of idiots. The people who need to stay active will, And will keep a low profile and maybe that's for the best the way the world is with Facebook, mobile phones etc!! Just my two pence

I use big standard one from local pet shop, probably better and cheaper out there but the shop has been good to me over the years so I keep going back.

Same as above really. Although always keep an eye out for any signs and more often if needed.

For Stud English Bull Terrier For Stud Only £250
Gareth12 replied to hopey88's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
Just enjoy the dog, keep him fit and active and forget about breeding mate. There are way too many pet litters as it is, especially bull breeds. He's a nice looking pet so just enjoy him for what he is... -

What if any are the best lines of working Staffords left? i know that most working Bulls are pits but are there any lines of staffys that are still bred for function rather than the show circuit and if so what are they? Always kept Staffys and love the breed I know there are better breeds out there for work etc but would like to hear if there are still some capable of a day's work or has the pit completely filled the 'working bull' niche?

What about the bull whippet or beddy whippet type lurchers as bushing dogs? Any experience with these?
-
Which breed or crosses are best for bushing, just one dog and one man after a few bunnies etc? Do the spaniel and spaniel crosses catch as much as the terriers or do they tend to be better for flushing to lurchers? are whippet type lurchers able to get through the cover and find aswell as the smaller dogs? I know every dog has its strengths and weaknesses, if you could have only one little bushing companion what would you go for?
