I totally agree, i've been digging for many years and this still occasionally happens. I have a Border bitch which suffers with this problem, if there is no quarry to ground she will search the earth and hunt anything thats there. Learning the terriers body language takes a bit of time and comes with experience, any experienced terrier-man would say the same.

Nice to hear your working a Border, how is he bred?

Hi mate, yeah still keep the old buggers! Comparing the two is quite difficult - kennel wise, as you know Lakies are prone to fight, this always restricted how many you could keep, thats why I always sold a few back to GM. My Lakies have always been headstrong and wanted to get stuck in at a young age, whereas the Border's are more laid back and a lot less trouble in the kennel. Digging wise, this line of Border are excellent finding dogs and they'll stop till there dug to. In that respect there very similar to the Lakies. However the biggest difference that i've found with a Border is after

Hi Possum, The names that you speak about are over 20 years old, have you still got this line of Border and did you get it from Levi directly? Do you still work these terriers and what is your success rate? 'Simmy' and 'Tess' were both owned by RW, do you know him? Haven't heard of 'Toddy Boy' but will find out. "DANDY" IS IN THE 6TH GENERATION OF MY TERRIERS PEDIGREE, THE ORIGINAL BREEDER USED BORDER BLOOD IN DEVELOPING HIS STRAIN OF WORKING TERRIER..I SAW THE BORDER BLOOD AND WAS HOPING SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE SEEN IT WORK OR KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT IT..SIMPLY HISTORY ONLY AS I REALIZE THAT B

Hi Mate, hope this will be of help. Danny was bred out of a bitch called Misty, but unfortunately the sire died at an early age, and I'm afraid I don't know too much about him. All I do know about him, is that he was owned by a farmer who lived around the corner from Levi Oates. As far as I know K.C. registered as well. I know that the mating of these two dogs, were one of the best lines Levi ever had. Also, Danny became sterile at the age of 6, so if you are looking at a recent pedigree with Danny's name on it, I would suspicious. 2 friends of mine had litter brothers of Danny, 1 was ca

Sorry, my mistake, didn't have my glasses on! Thanks mate. Sorry Possum, don't know anything about Dandy.

I still always thought that Flint was the better dog. Sorry I haven't got in contact with you Moorman, I like your chocolate pup. We'll have to get together sometime and do a bit of hunting. I was there one day when MD was bragging about Flint and RB said to him,put your money where your mouth is....do you really think that I would have sold the better dog.The challenge was never taken,so I think it's a debatable subject. We will get out soon,I'm looking fwd to it. Moorman, I was there when Me and Bruce and the lads from up north dug to Flint for five hours and 15 foot (appro

To anybody reading this thread, flint was a lakey bread by B. F. out of middletons lines.Out of a bitch called tess who was bought but turned out to be no good, and flint was given as a pup as good will B. B. who owened the dog work him hard. But flint could not live with ovette so B. B. sold him at age 4/5 to M.D. and later sent to americia to hunt fox and coons etc.

Neil the Middleton'strain book is crap, the old Middleton terriers were good i have old midd lines in mine , we can disect the back ground of every line , and ill repeat the question i asked Gary at the Yorkshire when did you put welsh in your line , never got answered mind, , so its back to what Ive said a hundred times, lines are only as good as the memory of the person who bred the terrier and the records kept , and the people who they obtained there stock off in the first place, old photos can be looked at to compare todays lines look at the photos of midds old stuff in that book and other

do not know about his current terriers

" I bought 1 dog and 1 bitch from Gary back in 1978, and it has been from these dogs that I have kept the line of Garys stuff. Yes - to your question, they are still fairly hard, they are bayers, but also they will mix it and have killed foxes. I now only keep bitches in my kennels and would only breed from a dog that has proved himself and is capable of killing a fox, and of course of the same lines. All my terriers can be spanned, and all the dogs I have bred can be spanned as well. Over the years, I have sold 3 maybe 4 dogs and bitches back to Gary, and they are mentioned in the book.

Hi, I've had Gary's lines for over 30 years, back in the days of Rock (the white-footed dog), Zeb, Tim, Nettle and Trixie to name just a few. I have at the moment 3 generations of his line, Grandmother/Mother/Daughter, all of which Black & Tan. All I would suggest to you, is not to believe everything you read in a book. Gary is getting older now and his memory, like all of ours, is getting a little bit frayed. In saying that, I can assure you all the above named dogs were excellent working terriers, and that is what I have based my own lines on. I've not been in contact with Gary for a nu

I'm not 100% sure that he was a close relation, but I was interested to see if the dog was Brightmore. Although he was a smart terrier, he was also a very very hard terrier. BQ mentioned this dog, but I still dont really know if he was 100% Brightmore. A lad down here called Gary based his line on this dog and it would interesting to know if anyone knew how he was bred.
-
I think the dog was called 'Billy', it was definitely from Bill himself, because I think the man who had the dog at the time was related to Bill. I also used to have a little black fell bitch - an excellent fox bitch, I know that it came down through 'Billy' line. I remember speaking to Gary Middleton, and he said that they both used to use eachother dogs, he said that their was a bit of Mr. Bray's stuff mixed in.
-
I've just bred a bitch to a Middleton/Brightmore dog. Can you tell me if Brightmore used a lot of Barker and Wilkes stuff? A black dog from Bill came down here about 25 years ago, he was a very hard dog and an excellent stud dog. I spoke to Bill a few times on the phone, unfortunately I never met him - a great bloke.

how did the old terrier men find there dogs
The Breeder replied to allgame's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
in the 60 70 with a hard dog who was mute we put in a baying bitch behind him many terriermen did this if they told the truth
