  1. could be a possibiltiy Lee, the original stock would be a lot smaller than here so smaller gene pool. Horses in the US have slightly different genetic make up to ours but they originally came from Europe. Bob is trying to find out if the high incidence of adrenal/insuloma in the US is genetic and / or enviroment/husbandry. He sampled thousands of ferrets all over the world, he personally did it himself with another doctor so will be interesting when the results come out
  2. the ferets taken to USA orginally came from here, he is testing them to find out what changes in different parts of world may have occured genetically as well as genetic conditions
  3. Just because you haven't seen or had experiance of a ferret with Waardenburgs does not mean that they do not exist. Genetics is a complecated matter in any animal. Bob Church last year traveled the world taking samples from ferrets for genetic testing and once this data is corolated we will all be better informed
  4. i have a jill with similar making though she isn't dark, she's what would be called a polecat mitt, but she appears to be silvering out from the tail up wards. My friend has her brother and he is now a silver
  5. What are you feeding ? I once ran out of ferret food so used cat biscuits instead thier poo the next day looked like it had blood init, but was colouring in bisuits. Could be a gastro prob that may need vet
  6. as he's a v-hob he will still have his hormones etc going on but she won't but he will still want to mate with her so could cos problems, being constantly humped can wear them out, not to mention all the ragging she'll get. Why not have just gone the hob done away as she's been done
  7. Not sure about that but try this forum as there are people who breed on it and are very experianced. it's mainly pet owning but a load of info to be got and they are friendly http://www.ferretsforum.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=7
  8. There are black and white as such , very few and far between, do you mean peibald as in random patterning or black body white head ? I did see a photo which was on a french website of a dalmation/polka dot feret but wether it was gen i don't know
  9. The more variety you can give the kits to eat the better. Ferrets can fixate on food and this is set by the time they are 3 months. Cheap mince is best for them as has high fat content try chicken too as well as the biscuits
  10. rescue in Aberdeen area had to close down some 6 months after opening, it was a council house and he had not got permission, council got an annonymous letter from a neighbour, that was also sent to the local paper, complaining that she was concerned for her safety as hundreds of maurading ferrets could get into her bedroom and attack her whilst she slept (he had and were all in hutches , locked inside. Was given 1 week to get rid of the ferrrets or loose his home. He has now moved house and restarted
  11. ferrets are escape artistes, what would happen if they got out ? The dogs could certainly kill them, that happened to some one I know when the ferret got out despite being locked in its hutch and got into the kennels
  12. where's your permission Jordan, Denise here, pm me I'll try and help you
  13. if you do manage to trap him, you would be better to contact Steve and Linda at Tayside feret rescue as thier set up is better set up to deal with that kind of problem. he may come good you have seen his worse side, scared and defensive
  14. P.S ferrets are good at wanting to scoff things they shouldn't, does mean it is good for them and can cause harm. They love raisians but only takes a few to kill them because they are toxic to ferrets
  15. ferrets like cats cannot manufacture their own taurine, it is required by them for overall good health, deficinancy in it causes heart and eye probs and can lead to others causing death. There is research being done on diet and thinking is that feeding biscuits can cause health problems such as insuloma, bladder stones teeth problems, kibble is a plant based mix, cats and ferrets cannot cope with vegtable matter, so even if meat protien is in the kibble the ratio is usually greater towards the vegtable matter, they lack the enzymes to break down fibre
  16. ferrets need 38 -40 percent protien and 18-20 percent oils/fat in their diet they also require taurine which is not found in dog food, be better with high quality cat food than dog food as cats require taurine in their diet too

  18. yes a bit of your garden that niether has been on or a room. Your hob does sound that he means buisness
  19. introduce them on neutral ground and monitor how they get on, ferrets can be territorial, let them play together for short time. if they are entire they will fight. if are getting 2 done and one vasectomised, you will have to keep the vasectomised one seperate from the others as he will still have hormones surging round, he don't know he's firing blanks and will behave like an entire male
  20. bought this 3 weeks ago with the intention of training up our house/pet ferrets but lucky me i`ve just bought a harris hawk and need to free up finances to get all the bits and bobs associated with this new hobby/sport. the ferret finder has the batteries fitted to make sure it was working. and i have put insulating tape round the the battery compartments on the collars as this is advised to keep out any damp. never been out the house and 110% working. it is the hi-vis orange unit. buyer will not be disapointed, £160.00 posted regards to all noddy aberdeen
  21. well done, had a similar experiance this year, couldn't take them in but got them to a rescue and all were rehomed in working homes
  22. contact a rescue near you, they may know where one is or local rspca shelter, but don't give it to them, the rescue may take it from you
  23. if it is a true polecat, do you not need a license to keep it ?
  24. have tried leaving them to it, she actively hunts them and is vicious as hell, even when they submit to her she doesn't stop. tried them all at once and one at a time no difference with her reaction. Find it wierd that she'll accept adults without a murmer but any kit she'll attack, she accidently got hold of a friends kit at a racing event , only got her off by covering her mouth and nose til she gave up
  25. jill is kept with 3 other hobs and has never been on her own. The kits were introduced to her one by one in neutral ground and she did scruff them and I didn't intervene until it got out of hand with her, all kits are scared of her even the 6mth old hob who is big and boistrous. It would be great if they could all get on, the hobs are great with kits. 2 of the hobs are rescues that i have and she was happy to have them move in. If only they could talk...
