Nice views, but even nicer dog. GWPX? TC

man has been using longnets to harvest rabbits for hundreds of years, id say the guys/poachers doing this for a living all those years ago would of come up with a pre set net. If i was to hazard i guess i'd say around 1800??? maybe carried in a sack.?? Nope, much earlier than that, that said it was not in this country, but I cannot see it being much different here at that time. TC

Joe why are you wearing the wife's slippers? I like the net and socks co-ordination though. TC

Look no further than rob58. Just have a look at his work in the taxidermy section. TC

You have traditional long nets and pre set nets, how long ago did the pre-set net become popular? You will be surprised at the answer. TC

Nope, never heard of it till I read this post.I will have a look. Thanks. TC Edited to add: Just seen the price on it. I think that is a non starter. Empty milk bottles are free. TC

Me and metal just do not get on I'm afraid. If I can't router or plane it we just don't mix, and one of us ends up in the bin. The size of the blank takes about 3/4 of an hour to cool but because it is a billet, it needs pressure on two sides top and side to stop the warping. I have an idea for the next mould if it will work is another matter. To be honest I am enjoying the challenge, it's something different. Right back off out the shed for another half an hour, till my hands stop working. TC

I have just found a video of the making of milk bottles with HDPE. The HDPE is heated to 170 degrees then a measured amount it placed in a mould of two halves then compressed air forces the HDPE to the shape of the mould. http://www.bottle2bottle.com/making-hdpe-bottles.asp http://www.bottle2bottle.com/tourplayer3.html TC

I would agree with the above. Brilliant for watching the dogs and quarry's every twist and turn. Seemed to have more than the usual bunnys running right at me with the k50 last night. Might of just been a coincidence, also seemed to keep the bunnys startled for longer in the one place before making it's run for freedom. That is a problem trying to asses something over one night. We all know how rabbits will act differently on any given night. I would imagine it will take a while under all different conditions to get a true reading of how rabbits react to the white beam. TC

Anyone else had a PM of Jessdale? Bless her cotton socks. TC

I wouldn't want it any tighter tbh, its nice to be able to see the dogs every move in the spill while still having the quarry in the hot spot, nothing worse than a real tight beam and lamping somthing and seeing nothing untill the dog pulls in enough to strike. Sometimes at extreme distances, especially on long stubbles or longish grass its great to be able to see the dog outside the hot spot cos the rabbit is not really visible. TC

Nelson I believe is doing a version of Joe's baskets at a reasonable price. Powder coated and one of the best workable designs available. TC

FFS are you really that thick? Tell me then, how broad is a broad head? How long is medium? I could go on and on and you still would not get it. The breed standards are made by the breed clubs, I have already agreed with you on this. But they are deliberately vague to allow for each judge to pick what he believes the dog should look like within the vague outlines of the breed standard. If it was not like that there would no need to have judges just put a dog up on a bench get out the tape and the nearest to the standard wins. TC
-
The judge goes over the dog with the breed standard in mind. If the standard says 20" tall a dog at 25" tall ain't going to win. The breed clubs write the standard. It is the judges who awards the prizes, it is their interpretations of what conforms to the breed standard that wins the prizes. To win at shows you have to please the judge simple as. Been there done that. It is the judge who decides, as long as the dog conforms with the breed standard. TC
-
Here is the breed standard for a lab. Very vague to say the least. they tend to use words that are really non descriptive so can be interpreted in many ways. http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/services/public/breed/standard.aspx?id=2048 TC
-
No, although the judge is appointed by the KC they have no control over how they judge dogs. All show dogs must conform to the breed standard but the breed standard leaves a lot of scope for interpretation within the standard. It is the judges that decide what dogs look like. TC
-
Jessdale you are correct in that the breed clubs set the standard, and that the standard is exactly the same for working and show dogs. However, it is a judge of any breed, that is appointed by the KC for KC shows I believe, that dictates how the dog looks. Their likes and dislikes are bred for, cos if the judge does not like the way your dog looks there are no rosettes for you. TC

Well I went out the shed for an hour, had to come in as it was brasic out there, to give machining the worst blank I had a go. It's the bottom blank in this photo. To be honest I did not have high hopes as the blank was bent, anyhow I gave it a go. This is how it turned out. So a few lessons learnt, I need to make a bigger blank at least 6 or 7mm larger than I want. Or just make the blanks to any size and have the needle the size it cleans up to. They need to be a lot longer than I need also. The first option is the best for me as I can have the needles all the s
-
Right an update, I tried another blank this week I had the quantity right but as it cooled it shrank and warped. So before I do a new jig that can be tensioned on two side I will try and machine the blanks I have to see if the nose of the needle will be strong enough. TC

I should imagine injection but I don't really know. TC

Here a simple way to straighten sticks, you can use a hot air gun, but that can burn the wood if your not careful. Place a roasting pan on a heat source and fill with hot water. I then place a rack on top of the pan and place the sticks to be steamed on top of the rack and cover with a tea towel to keep the steam in. TC

My nets stand out because i dont cut corners, I wouldnt sell something i dont use myself or wouldn't be happy to pay for. Too many will cut corners to save a few pence or they simply dont know what a good killing net is. Quality gear at a fair price and i'll never move away from that. As I stated people get what they pay for, a net that catches. After being a long netter for 25 years plus I know how a good net is made and what it can do, opposed to nets from the likes of JBS. Your nets conform to the standard of nets I was selling years ago. Nothing special, just good honest catching
-
To be fair, Les's nets are nothing special, he will tell you that. They are just nets rigged how they should be. What is special about his nets and his service is, it does what it says on the tin, and you actually get what you pay for. A net that catches rabbits, delivered when stated, with no holes to fix before you can use it. TC

Shooting lamped pheasants with a catapult is not exactly sporting either, but that does not seem to worry you. TC
