  1. Also, it sounds like he's just jumping around like crazy getting some exercise. Maybe let him out for longer, give him a chance to have a run around and release some energy!!
  2. Ferreting that is Basically, my ferreting partner has gone self employed, and he now works 30 hours a day. 8 days a week, 452 days a year. I'm doing a bit on my own, but most of my permission is hedgerows, and you need a man (or woman ) on each side! Basically, if someone wants to come out with me for a few hours occassionally, then give me a shout. My permission isn't amazing, but it's all about getting out and about! Know it alls and arseholes need not apply. Cheers! (North Norfolk)
  3. And even if it is a genuinely wild polecat, surely there are ethical issues involved in taking it from the wild?!?
  4. ive got to say i looked in the q and a section before i put my post up and there seemed to be very little in there! plus its all good having a seperate section for newbies to ask questions but how many people who know what there talking about would bother to look in there? hope you dont think me rude but its just a case of dont ask dont get told a lot of the time! im picking my new ferrets up on friday and ive got a million and one questions though mostly about working them, ive been finding i can answer most of my questions just by topic searches! keep up the good work guys and please bea
  5. Have a frequently asked questions forum pinned at the top of the page? It seems that over the past few weeks, we've had several topics coming up asking the same thing- "can we use this, can you do that, etc etc", and it's making the forum a much less interesting place than it was! I know that many of these questions are coming from younger members, or new keepers- and there is a fabulous wealth of knowledge and experience on this board- but I think it'd make sense to have an FAQ, or just a slab of information at the top of the page to be used as reference. Between us on here, we'd
  6. About ten years ago, I had a crappy old break barrel air pistol. Where I lived at the time we had stables. The stable walls were double lined at the bottom, and single at the top- meaning that there was a bit of a ledge at about chest height all the way around. We used one of these stables as a feed room. One afternoon, i'd been doing some plinking with the air pistol, and had a look over the door of the feed shed on the off chance there might be a rat sat there for me to shoot at and miss. As I looked over, a mouse ran along the ledge on the opposite wall. Instinctively, I swung thro
  7. I've fed magpies many times with no ill effect. Can't see a problem with it at all.
  8. I've used hay for years, never had a problem. I've always avoided using straw though, as I was told many years ago that this is more likely to carry mites. Probably not true at all, but one of those things that sticks in the mind!
  9. Who told you that?! Ant powder and "wasp powder" (Ficam D to most pesties!) are basically the same thing, a bendiocarb based insecticidal dust. Sure, there are slight variations as to the type of insecticeds- I'm sure some pesters will use a permethrin based dust for wasps, just as I'm sure there are probably permethrin based ant powders commercially availiable. Long and short of it- "ant powder" will kill a wasp nest, but if you want to go close enough to the nest to treat it with the duster pack, then basically, you're a fool! Leave it to the pros!
  10. I picked up the three newest members of my team last night, 2 young albino jills and a beauty of a polecat hob. All have been rehomed from the Cambridgeshire ferret welfare society. The hob will only eat kibble though. He was at the "rescue centre" (my mate's house!) for a few weeks, and he's had no luck getting him to eat any meat at all. At the moment, he's being kept on his own, as he's just been vasectomised. I'm sure he'll start eating meat when he gets in with all the others, but I just wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should try him on! Thanks in adv
  11. Any disinfectant that doesn't go white in water will be fine mate. If it goes white, it contains something called phenol, which is toxic to ferrets.
  12. Myxy rabbit is fine for ferrets to eat.
  13. Can you maybe describe it in a bit more detail? Or even post some photos?
  14. Cracking rifles mate. I've wanted one for ages. If you decide you dont want it, would you mind PMing me with contact details for the guy selling it, and how much he's asking? Cheers!!!
  15. Woodshavings! Spread them throughout, and in the bed, I'd personally use shredded paper or hay. Clean it out regularly (take the poop out daily) and you can't go far wrong!
  16. Ron i found keeping a vasectomised hob in with the entire jills i had here very easy, he only bothered the jills when each one came into season & then left them alone , it also stopped the maternal dragging of other ferrets once they went into pseudo pregnancy , all in all it worked here for years untill he died . I also kept castrates with the vasectomised hob as well as the jills, around 10 ferrets in a group Excellent, thanks Kay! I'll let you know how it goes when they come then!!
  17. And it's a b*****d!!! The one that is utterly etched into my memory and will be forever is from a couple of seasons ago. We were ferreting an old sea wall- basically a big bank, so the level we were stood on was lower than the level of the burrows, if you get me? Anyway, it was quite a long bank, and i noticed a net move about 20 yards to my right. Initially I thought it'd slipped, so I trotted over to reset it. When I got there, I saw that the net had fallen right into the whole. Next guess was that a ferret had been up, got caught and pulled it back down. I went to tug the net out,
  18. They certainly dont need it every day! I give mine a drop of milk very occassionally, usually watered down.
  19. Castrated, it will definitely be fine. I keep my castrated hob and jills together at all times, and have never ever had a problem. I've got another 2 jills and a vasectomised hob on the way, and I plan to keep them all in the same space too- just hope the vascectomised fella leaves the girls alone!
